Let me remind you who you are dealing with! I am Grigon, Blood Emperor of Hylurg... scourge of the Crab Nebula, AND A GREAT FATHER!
„
~ Grigon to Elio; his most famous quote. noicion
“
I may not always understand you, but I still love you.
„
~ Grigon's redemption, finally accepting his son Glordon for who he is.
Lord Commander Grigon is the main antagonist of Pixar's 29th full-length animated film Elio.
He is the warmongering and wrathful commander of the Hylurgian Empire and the father of Glordon, who wants his son to become a great commander like him. He desperately wants to become part of the Communiverse, and swears vengeance on them when he's rejected. He is the former arch-nemesis of the film's titular character Elio Solis.
He was voiced by Brad Garrett, who also voiced Tank in An Extremely Goofy Movie, Ernst Strepfinger in Ozzy and Drix, The Giant in Hoodwinked, Trypticon in The Transformers, Riff Raff in Underdog, Krang in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and Uto in Tarzan II.
Grigon is a harsh and ruthless ruler who commits massacres and even genocide on the planets he conquers. He displays the skeletons of his victims in an aquarium-like chamber on his ship. Grigon is so ruthless and cruel that he even claims to have eaten his own mother during childbirth.
Above all else however, there is one thing Grigon holds as most valuable: His son, Glordon. Grigon genuinely cares for his son, Glordon and in truth, puts his son above many things. During the first negotiation, when Elio insults him for his parenting skills, this immediately infuriates him. And later on when Glordon is near death, Grigon swaddles his son and holds him close. He even tells Glordon that he still loves him as his son, even if he (Glordon) doesn't want to be a war machine.
Appearance[]
Grigon prefers to keep an uptight posture within his build as he must maintain his public image both to his subjects and the Communiverse. He sports an armored torso built of a steel-like material, with two glowing stripes (presumably resembling eyes or possibly the ensign of his people), and has two armored gauntlets with further glowing accents. Underneath his muscular physique are four legs armored with heavy plating at the hooves/feet with the exception of the joints, which are only mildly reinforced. His helmet has a grey plastic-like visor with a visage for each of his four eyes, and his chest armor is also reinforced with medium plating.
Without his carapace, Grigon is a small, caterpillar/tardigrade like creature. He has no visible eyes and has two nubs on his head for ears. He has a large mouth with several rows of sharp teeth. His skin is mostly an off-white with purple spots.
Biography[]
Past[]
Grigon's past is mostly unknown, but it can be implied that he conquered many planets in the past. At some point, he married and had a child named Glordon, whom he would try to mold into a warlord like him, despite Glordon's reluctance.
Elio[]
Grigon was first seen ordering the Communiverse to allow him membership, threatening to kill them if they didn't comply. Elio traveled to Grigon's ship to negotiate with Grigon, but he was imprisoned after insulting Grigon's parenting skills. Grigon prepared to destroy the Communiverse, but he was forced to surrender after discovering that Elio had kidnapped his son.
As a demonstration of the Hylurgian Empire's might, Grigon wanted Glordon to don his carapace in front of the Communiverse. However, upon realizing that Glordon was replaced by a clone, he broke off his deal to surrender. After failing to find Glordon, as he had accidentally sent himself to Earth, Grigon ordered his army to execute everyone in the Communiverse.
Within hours, Grigon's forces captured everyone in the Communiverse. Fortunately for everyone involved, Elio returned with Glordon, though he was on the brink of death due to the colder environment. Grigon ripped himself out of his carapace to swaddle Glordon with his silk. After seeing how Elio saved his son, Grigon left the Communiverse alone, and it's implied that he gave up his conquering ways.
Powers and Abilities[]
Without his carapace, Grigon is a small, caterpillar/tardigrade like creature. However, thanks to his shell, he is extremely powerful in using all manner of weapons. For example, when Elio came aboard, he opened fire on hundreds of fly-like aliens to demonstrate his strength.

Trivia[]
Grigon is the fourth Pixar character to be voiced by Brad Garrett. The other three were Dim in A Bug's Life, Bloat in Finding Nemo, and Auguste Gusteau in Ratatouille. However, he is Garrett's first villainous role in a Pixar film. All of his other characters are heroes.
Grigon is considered a foil to the following characters:
Elio Solis: Both desperately want to fit in with a group that didn't want them. Elio wanted to be accepted into society, but he was shunned for believing in aliens, while Grigon was denied entry to the Communiverse for his destructive tendencies. If Elio focused too much on trying to fit in with other people, he would've ended up like Grigon.
Olga Solis: Both are guardians of a child whom they desperately wanted to change. Olga wanted her nephew, Elio, to be more "normal", while Grigon wanted to make his son, Glordon, a warlord. However, in the end, they both learn to accept their children for who they are. Grigon serves an example of what Olga would've become if she tried to change Elio's personality.
Glordon: Grigon represents what Glordon would've become if he hadn't met Elio and became friends with him and was raised into becoming a warlord like his father.
Grigon is the fourth main antagonist of a Pixar movie to be a parent, after Henry J. Waternoose III and Johnny Worthington III from the Monsters, Inc. franchise, and Ming Lee from Turning Red. However, Waternoose and Johnny weren't revealed to be parents until the spinoff series, Monsters at Work, though Johnny's case is justified, due to his first appearance, Monsters University, being a prequel to the original Monsters, Inc. film.
Grigon is the fifth main antagonist of a Pixar film to redeem himself, after Mor'du from Brave, Gabby Gabby from Toy Story 4, Ming Lee from Turning Red, and Anxiety from Inside Out 2.
Grigon mentions being the "Scourge of the Crab Nebula," indicate that may be where his home planet is and/or where the Communiverse is located.
The joke in the trailer about Grigon eating his mother the moment that he was born was likely inspired by a similar joke in Moana where Tamatoa confesses that he ate his grandmother.
However, unlike Tamatoa, Grigon regrets eating his mother at birth.
Grigon's name was originally supposed to be Ambassador Grigon before it was changed to Lord Grigon. The exact reason is unknown, but it's possible Grigon was originally planned to be an ambassador, as he was shown as part of the Communiverse in the initial teaser trailer.
Grigon's name remained unchanged in the Latin American McDonalds promotion and on the Happy Meal boxes.
Additionally, there is also another name for him, General Grigon has been trademarked, even though it is unclear if this name would be actually used.
He is the second Pixar main antagonist with a decapod-like design. The first was Henry J. Waternoose III. Coincidentally, both of them are fathers of those who are less evil than them (though in Waternoose's case, he is Roger Rogers' disowned dad).
As the first teaser of the film shows before major changes to the plot were made, Grigon was originally already a member of the Communiverse (named here The United Advanced Species of the Universe) unlike in the final version where they reject him out of fear. He also seemed calmer and much friendlier towards Elio, suggesting that he wasn't the main antagonist in this version of the film.
