Wikidata:Blocking policy
This page documents a Wikidata policy. It is a widely accepted standard that all editors should normally follow. All changes made to it (except for minor edits such as fixing typos) should reflect consensus. When in doubt, discuss your idea on the project chat. |
This page contains Wikidata's blocking policy. A block on a user account or IP address technically disables the ability of that account or IP address to edit Wikidata while that block is active. A user account or IP address under a block is said to be a blocked user.
Administrators may block user accounts or IP addresses for the following reasons:
- To prevent local abuse where a pattern of local abuse has been established. Local abuse includes, but is not limited to unambiguous and clear spamming and/or vandalism
- Improper use of multiple accounts
- Personal attacks or harassment
- Edit warring
- Unauthorised and/or malfunctioning bots
- Repeated or egregious violations of the living persons policy
Users or IP addresses should not be blocked solely for behaviour or actions on other projects. As an exception to this, if an account with a history of cross-wiki or single project abuse shows signs of continuing that pattern on Wikidata, they may be blocked here without a pattern of local abuse.
The block should not be extended to any authorized bot account operated by a blocked user if and only if the blocked account meets all of the criteria below:
- The main user account is not indefinitely blocked.
- The bot account is only conducting authorized tasks.
- The reasons for the block are not related to the bot tasks.
While editors are encouraged to warn and educate disruptive users, warnings are by no means necessary for an administrator to perform a block. Administrators can, but do not have to, use the multilingual template {{Block}}
to notify blocked users of their blocks.
If any block or unblock is controversial, a short discussion should commence via the administrators' noticeboard on which course of action to take. Administrators should be mindful of both any past consensus that has been established in regard to blocking the user, and any relevant policies related to the block.
Requesting a block
Users may request the blocking of an account or IP address for any of the above reasons at Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard (though if sockpuppetry is involved and CheckUser is warranted, please file a request at Wikidata:Requests for checkuser instead).
