Most Essential Learning Competencies

Using models, relate:
1. the tilt of the Earth to the length of daytime;
2. the length of daytime to the amount of energy received;
3. the position of the Earth in its orbit to the height of the Sun in the sky.
(S7ES-IVh-5)

This module was specially designed to help you understand and apply the lesson objectives.
Read and follow the simple instructions as your guide.
1. Set a conducive learning space at home so you can focus on your studies.
2. Seek assistance from your parents or guardian to guide you in doing the activities.
3. Takedown important concepts and list questions you would like to ask from your
teacher.

The Writer
Expectations
This module will help you demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of
the seasons and the position of the Sun in the sky. Specifically, this
material will help you to:

1. explain the movement of the Earth concerning the Sun;

2. explain how the position of Earth affects the length of daytime and
nighttime; and
3. explain how the energy from the Sun affects the length of daytime and

Brief Introduction
We may not feel the ground moving but the world we
live in is always in constant motion. Like other planets in the
Solar System, the Earth moves mainly in two ways: it spins on
its axis and it circles the Sun. What is more astonishing is that
it is speeding around the Sun at 30 k/s!
We cannot feel these motions, but we know that the Earth
is in motion as we see the Sun, Moon, Stars, and other heavenly
bodies whenever we observe the sky.
All these constant motions affect the length of day and night, the climate we experience,
the different seasons, and the energy that we receive from the Sun.

Activity 1: The Revolving Earth

Objective: Using the Sun-Earth model, describe the movement of the Earth with respect to the
Sun.
Directions: Analyze the Sun-Earth Model and answer the following questions by choosing the
letter of the correct answer.
The Sun-Earth model shows the location of the Earth at different times as it revolves around the
Sun. Note that the Earth is tilted and is divided into two hemispheres, the Northern hemisphere
(the top part of the globe) and the Southern hemisphere (the bottom part of the globe).

1. In which month is the North hemisphere tilted toward the Sun?

a. December b. June
2. In which month is the South hemisphere tilted away from the Sun?
a.December b. June
3. Philippines is a tropical country located near the equator thus, there are two general
seasons: the rainy and dry season. According to the figure, (a) in which month does the
dry season (summer) approximately starts?
a. March b. June
(b) in which month does the rainy season approximately starts?
a. September b. June

3
Activity 2: It’s Time
Objective: Relate the tilt of the Earth to the length of daytime.
Directions: The figures show a comparison between the number of directed rays received by Earth
during June and December. Compare these figures then analyze and answer the following
questions. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Figure 3

Note that the Earth is tilted 23.45 degrees from the North pole. When the North pole is tilted
towards the Sun, it means so is the Northern hemisphere. When the North pole is tilted away from
the Sun, so is the Southern hemisphere; and vice-versa. This axial tilt greatly affects the length of
daytime and nighttime.
1. Which hemisphere is tilted toward the sun?
2. Which hemisphere is tilted away from the sun?
3. In which month is the North pole tilted away from the Sun? Which would be longer during this
time —daytime or nighttime? Why?
4. In which month is the North pole tilted towards the Sun? Which would be longer during this
time —daytime or nighttime? Why?

Activity 3: You Light Up the World

Objective: Relate the length of daytime to the amount of energy received.
Directions: Refer to Figure 3 in Activity 2. Complete the statement by choosing the letter of the
correct answer.
1. When the Earth’s Southern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, the countries in that region
most likely experiences a _____________ climate.
a. colder b. hotter
2. When the Earth’s Northern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, the countries in that
region most likely experiences a _____________ climate.
a. colder b. hotter
3. When the phase of the Earth is tilted away from or slightly obscured from the Sun, what is
the general climate of that region?
a. colder b. hotter

4
Activity 4: Go the Distance

Objective: Relate the position of the Earth in its orbit to the distance of the Sun in the sky.
Directions: Study the concepts below. Analyze the Earth-Sun model and complete the table below.
The orbit in which Earth travels to complete one revolution around the Sun is not entirely
in a perfect circle but elliptical in shape. Remember that a one-year Earth revolution takes
365.25 days. A year consists of 12 months. In 12 months, the Earth revolves on its orbit and
since it is elliptical in shape, the distance between the Earth and Sun varies.
Aphelion is the point at which Earth is farthest from the Sun. During this time, since the
northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, it experiences summer or warmer climate while
the southern hemisphere which is tilted away from the sun receives less amount of sunlight
resulting to a colder climate or winter. By contrast, Perihelion is the point at which Earth is
closest to the Sun. The northern hemisphere at this time is tilted away from the Sun, thus it
experiences winter or colder climate while southern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun
receiving direct heat.

Check Your Understanding

Never resting, never still. Moving silently from hill to hill. It does not walk, run, or trot, all is
cool where it is not. What is it? ( _ U _)
1. This is the season when nights are short. And children have plenty of fun and sport. Boating
and swimming all day long. (S_M_E_)
2. You ride on me every day but barely notice, I’m hot and cold at the very same time, I’m
the densest of my clan, and my first three help you enjoy music. What am I? (E_R_ _)
3. I run in circles and when I’m farthest from the goal, I lose the warmth I had all along. What
is this new feeling? (C_LD)

Remember
● Earth has two regions: The Northern hemisphere and the Southern hemisphere.
● The Earth is tilted 23.45 degrees from the North pole. Following the North pole’s position,
if it is tilted towards the Earth, the temperature is warmer; if it is tilted away, the
temperature is colder.
● In the month of June, the Northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun while the Southern
hemisphere is tilted away from it.
● In the month of December, the Southern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun while the
Northern hemisphere is tilted away from it.
● When Earth is closest to the Sun, the days are longer, and nights are shorter. When Earth
is far from the Sun, the nights are longer, and days are shorter.
● The orbit in which the Earth revolves around the Sun is elliptical. When the Earth is at its
closest point to the Sun, it is called Perihelion. When Earth is at the farthest point from the
Sun, it is called Aphelion.

Post-Test

4. When do we receive the least amount of energy from the Sun?
a. When Earth is closer to the Sun
b. When Earth is far from the Sun
c. When Earth is tilted towards the Sun
d. When the Northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun
5. Which statement is TRUE about the Earth and Sun?
a. Learning the proper positioning of Earth relative to the Sun helps us in identifying
directions.
b. Learning the proper positioning of Earth relative to the Sun solves global warming.
c. Learning the proper positioning of Earth relative to the Sun helps in identifying the
weather, climate, time, and natural phenomena.
d. Learning the proper positioning of Earth relative to the Sun gives us control over the
weather, climate, time, and natural phenomena.
