TOPIC IDENTIFYING AUTHOR’S POINT OF VIEW

LEARNING Comprehend literary texts
COMPETENCY
- Identifying author’s/ speaker’s point of view
EN4LR-IV-1.2

OBJECTIVES To comprehend literary texts by identifying author’s/speaker’s point of view

-first person, second person, third person (omniscient)

IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answer on your answer sheets.

Point of view refers to the mode of narration that a writer or author uses to allow
the readers to “hear,” “see,” and “feel” what takes place in a story, poem, essay, and other
pieces of writing. It is an important tool that writers use to express effectively what they
want to tell the readers.
The three main types of point of view are: Delighted as I was..

1. First Person. The author is involved in the story—he or she may be the
main character or one of the characters. The pronouns I and we are
used.
If you can’t be the

literary writing, turning the reader into the
character, but is commonly used in instructional writing.

happy family.
( omniscient) The author or
narrator is not involved in the story—
only a witness who knows the best of the thoughts
and feelings of the characters. The pronouns he,
she, it and they are used.

Read the passage from “The Language of Poetry.”

“The pleasure of poetry is a special bonus that comes to you because you
have learned to read. You may think that because poetry is a special form of literature, it is
tricky to understand. However, the skills that you have learned for reading other materials
will be of use to you in reading poems.”

From the given passage, we can say that the point of view employed in the above
piece is in the Second Person because it uses the pronoun “you” which turns the reader
into the character.
Directions: Write First, Second or Third to show the point of view from which the piece
has been written.
