Project Title: SCHOOL READING PROGRAM FOR THE 2ND SEMESTER

Proponent: Analyn L. Ligue
Position: Master Teacher II/ School Reading Coordinator
Project Budget: 1,400 (School IGP)
Project Type: 4 Week Reading Program ( A Pull Out Reading Intervention)

RATIONALE

Reading instruction plays an important role in the academic lives of the

learners. Based on observation, pupils can read and answer the questions if the
answers are found in the text, but majority of them can hardly answer, if the
questions call for a deeper analysis. They are not able to understand the questions
well and they have difficulty summarizing the selection in their own words. In most
cases, they just copy lines from the selection for their answer. Many of the pupils lack
for the necessary reading skills. They fail to comprehend the organization of what they
read. They read slowly, understand little, and remember less. They find the subject
matter materials more difficult to read than those that tell a story. They are passive
reader like a receptacle into which information flows.

Despite of numerous researches on remedial instruction, major gaps persist in

the knowledge of how to teach reading to the alarming increase of pupils with the most
severe reading difficulties. Research findings indicate that little of pupils in the
primary levels whose response to typically effective intervention is low. Thus, there is a
need of further planning and designing innovative reading intervention approaches
that ensures remedy for pupils reading difficulties.

In the different grade level of VCES, there are some pupils with reading
difficulties that may need intervention to prevent future reading failure. An
intervention for the 2nd Semester which offers specific recommendation to help
teachers identify pupils in need of intervention and implement evidence based
interventions to promote their reading achievement.

In order to solve the prevailing problem about pupil’s low performance, and to

address the needs of these school children, it is so timely that VCES will be
conducting 4 Week Reading Program in the hopes of increasing their proficiency
level. This is a pull out reading intervention.

This is an intervention designed to address the needs of some school children

who have difficulties in reading. It is also designed to lessen or reduce the tendency of
drop-out and absenteeism for the next school.

The role of the reading teachers is to give an appropriate innovative intervention

that ensures remedy for pupils academic development. Teachers will provide
intervention materials to better assist the needs of the pupils. They will also assess the
level of progress that the struggling pupils have achieved
