Activity 1: Contemporary Art Making

Create a contemporary art using one of the newer techniques (abstract expressionism, surrealism, fauvism, or
neoplasticism). You can make it using bond paper, illustration board, Oslo paper or any medium you want.
Write a brief explanation of your art. You can use the guide question below to write you explanation. Teacher
will use rubrics for scoring. Note: Please take a picture of your own artwork/masterpiece.

Guide questions:
1. What is the title of your contemporary art?
2. What technique did you use?
3. What medium/s did you use?
4. What is the theme of your art?
5. What ideas you have to convey to the audience of your art?

This contemporary artwork of

mine is entitled Female Metamorphosis. I
incorporated the surrealism art technique in creating this piece to convey my thoughts and feelings about
the topic of female femininity/maturity through my canvas. I used an 8.26 x 11.4 inches’ watercolor on
paper medium in constructing this piece. The prominent theme of my art is female femininity and
evolution. The butterflies occupying the woman’s body symbolizes the woman’s transformation towards
attaining maturity; furthermore, it is implying that – like all butterflies, transformation exists within us. And
all women have the capacity to evolve and achieve full elegance like how caterpillars patiently emerge from
their cocoons to become a beautiful and mature butterflies.
