REFLECTION PAPER: Galileo’s Battle for the heavens

Galileo Galilei's works become one of the most important parts of science in the
history of motion and astronomy. After watching the video " Galileo's battle for the
heavens," I realized that he was a very ambitious person. He is passionate and serious
in dealing with things and wants to prove his claims. I also learned that he likes studying
not only science but also mathematics and he is one of the people who look up the
language of mathematics, his works become a foundation for other people so that we
could understand the world we are living in.

From the video presented, it is said that Galileo's house was full of students and
likes to use his mind to solve his curiosity. Because of that, he was interested in the
optics of the telescope and later on discovered that his lenses can do more than just
magnify. He reshaped our view of the world and the telescope he made helps on
observing vessels from the sea. This device he made also lead to his discovery of many
things related to astronomy. Galileo discovered that the surface of the moon is not
smooth and that Jupiter has 4 moons. He also believed that the Copernican theory of
heliocentrism is true but still hasn't proven. Galileo used Venus to support heliocentrism
and shared his ideas. But because of this theory, the priest claimed that Galileo is
spouting dangerous ideas that are contradicting the bible, this is the reason why Galileo
was accused of being a heretic.

I think Galileo is considered as a "giant" because of his contribution to

astronomy. First, he discovered the moons of Jupiter that refuse the church's belief of
everything orbiting the Earth. Second, that Venus went through phases like the moon,
supporting the heliocentric theory of Copernicus. Finally, observing spots on the sun
discredited the notion that it was a ''perfect'' body. These findings gave a big impact on
what we know today, without Galileo's discoveries we might not progress and think the
other way around.

After watching the video, I realized that we should also be ambitious and learn
how to observe things from our surroundings. Galileo helps me learn the importance of
determination and hard work to achieve my goals. Also, we should be curious and
discover just like what Galileo Galilei said "All truths are easy to understand ones they
are discovered; the point is to discover them."
