M1: History and Science Learning Activity 1
In the historical method as discussed by Gottschalk, explain the importance of
understanding History viz a viz historical method?
After reading the historical method by Louise Gottschalk, I learned that when you
are trying to learn a history of something you should research a lot of details and facts
about the item or structure you are trying to find. You need to know if the text in documents
is saying the truth, you have to know the reliability or accuracy of the information and
determine its purpose. The historical method contains external and internal criticism that
we should follow to have an accurate result, and by that, I realized the importance of
understanding history.
Understanding history is important because if we make a wrong conclusion, it
could affect the chronological event of history and confusion to other people who are
going to read it. Gottschalk explained the types of criticism so that we could have a guide
on identifying authenticated evidence and facts that can help us on determining history.
And by that, we can learn to understand other people not only to our country but also a
valuable tool when it comes to understanding those who are different from us. It can also
help us understand ourselves by knowing the story of how our nation, city, or community
came to be everything that it is. History also helps us decide and learn from past mistakes
and help us understand why people behave the way they do. It also widens our
perspective and think from a different view point which will help ourselves in determining
right choices in different situations.
Gottschalk also mentioned in his historical method that each piece of evidence
must be weighted individually. For me, I think it wants us to think critically before saying
that the evidence is really trustworthy. If we are just going to ignore little details that is
suspicious, we cannot truly understand what is history. Because for me, history must be
taken seriously, it is something that can affect the future and can solve past problems.
We should conduct a research that can give us reliable result in order for us to achieve
true understanding to history. I think it is what makes us who we are today just like what
Martin Luther King Jr. said “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.”
