1. My life choices are based on what I have actually Agree Disagree

2. My views about the world are dependent on what I have Agree Disagree
actually witnessed.

7. For me, happiness is tangible. Agree Disagree

Scoring Key:
If majority of your answers is “agree”, then you are an empiricist. If majority of your answers is “disagree”,
then you are a rationalist.

Process questions:
1. How do you differentiate empiricism and rationalism?
____________________________________________________________________________________
Rationalism is about critical thinking by reasoning about what is true, real, or right. The ability of being
rationalist is by the reason. Reason that can be essential as truth. While Empiricism gained knowledge

through sensory experience. The reality relies only on what we can be observed and experienced by

senses.

2. Do you agree with your classification? Why or why not?

____________________________________________________________________________________
________________________
Yes, because there are some phenomenon that science or even experiments can’t explain like
God and Mathematical solutions things that cannot explain the physical world. But can define
as human life and progress. Somehow I am like that by thinking and reasoning I can easily
understand a certain topic.
EXERCISE 1B: How Do I See MySelf?
Instructions: Read the different statements below and answer the succeeding questions. In answering,
take note of the three discerning points between empiricism and rationalism.

Rationalism Empiricism

a tabula rasa, a blank state.

1. When you are studying or reviewing lessons, are you more likely to take the rationalist viewpoint or
empiricist viewpoint? Why?
________________________________________________________________________________
In studying, I likely to take the both for coping up with our lessons. Because sometimes reasoning with
________________________________________________________________________________
the knowledge of experience comes up with fruitful result. In anyways Empiricist viewpoint was my
strategy to study lessons. And according to John Locke, that are knowledge depends on what we
________________________________________________________________________________
experience since we were born. So by the experience that I’ve learned it makes me a better person and
________________________________________
to know who I really am. In studying I reflects on my experience and do what I used to do.
______________________________________________________________________

2. How do you apply empiricism and/or rationalism in studying your lessons? Be specific and concrete.
Try to remember your habits and how you make sense of the lessons.
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
In studying for me as a rationalist, rationalism helps me to understand,
memorize and educate myself. I prefer to sleep a lot because my knowledge

when it comes from memorizing good rest means good memorization.

______________________________________________________________________

3. Is it possible to make use of both philosophical approaches? Why or why not?

________________________________________________________________________________
For me yes, because combining the both approaches increased the comprehension skills and make
________________________________________________________________________________
everything vivid. I can easily reason out about some topic. And make a comparison which with this

approaches meets the concrete and the truth when fact is being discussed. Also introspection is one of the
________________________________________________________________________________
thinking process in rationalism where I monitor and examine my own thoughts whether it’ll bring good or
bad for me or will harm others. In empiricism I learn through experiences. I can easily understand and solve
____________________________________________________________
if I’m at the same situation from my past. Because I learned, gained, and studied my past experiences
therefore I will be better off in life.
EXERCISE 2
A. From the given quotations below, choose one and relate it to either behaviorism, mentalism or
humanism.

“Knowing others is intelligence. Knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength. Mastering
yourself is a true power.”
- Lao Tzu

“You cannot dream yourself into a character, you must hammer and force yourself one.” -

- Henry David Thoreau

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson

____________________________________________________________________________________
The quotation ‘The only person you are destined to become is the person you decided to be.’ I can relate this
____________________________________________________________________________________
quotation in mentalism. Mentalism is being conscious of what we can do, what we can have and how can we
____________________________________________________________________________________
handle a certain situations. Dealing with the past was the hard thing to do it was like a marble being delved in a
____________________________________________
labyrinth. A lot of complications and hardships may come but we need to introspect ourselves. We need to be
aware, to gain consciousness and to be awake so past don’t repeat itself. In our past experiences we should
____________________________________________________________________________________
forgive and forget, forgive ourselves for making a mistake and forget all those bad memories that pulling us for

making a change. After that put back ourselves together and keep moving forward even if we been through a
lot. Making our own masterpiece requires more pain to make things work organized and well-prepared. Life is
____________________________________________________________________________________
full of challenges and consequence so we must learn from it. Because in this quote we have the only key to
____________________________________________
make a change. We should have to aware of what we wanted. Asked ourselves, “is this I want my life to end
up?” we were afraid to fight back because the damage brought by the past was too much. So instead of
__________________________________________________________________________
worrying make it our inspiration to be better person. Don’t dwell in the past, leave it and keep moving forward.
Think and decide who we want ourselves to because future depends on how we see ourselves. Like the
saying,” make your own masterpiece imagine no limitations on what we can be, have and do.” It affects your
mentality because we limit ourselves. Have strong determination to conquer your past do it with love and
passion. Your achievements could grew bigger than you’ve dream.
