I. Objectives: At the end of the 50 minute period, pupils should be able to:

1. Define the integumentary system

2. Identify accessory organs and their functions
3. Explain how to take good care of the integumentary system

II. Subject Matter

A. UNIT 1: LIVING THINGS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT

B. Chapter: Integumentary System
C. Topics:
 Define integumentary system
 Accessory structures
 Sweat glands
 Oil glands
 Hair
 Nails
 Healthful habits that promote the proper functioning of integumentary system

D. Concepts:

INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

 Integumentary system – It consists of the skin, hair, nails, glands, and nerves. Its
main function is to act as a barrier to protect the body from the outside world. It
also functions to retain body fluids, protect against disease, eliminate waste
products, and regulate body temperature.
FUNCTIONS OF THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

 Protects the body's internal living tissues and organs

 Protects against invasion by infectious organisms
 Protects the body from dehydration
 Protects the body against abrupt changes in temperature
 Helps dispose of waste materials
 Acts as a receptor for touch, pressure, pain, heat, and cold
 Stores water and fat

 Skin - the thin layer of tissue forming the natural outer covering of the body of a
person or animal.

FUNCTIONS OF THE SKIN

 Protection
 Cushions and insulates and is waterproof
 Protects from chemicals, heat, cold, bacteria
 Screens UV
 Synthesizes vitamin D with UV
 Regulates body heat
 Prevents unnecessary water loss
 Sensory reception (nerve endings)

TWO MAIN LAYERS OF SKIN

EPIDERMIS DERMIS

- The outer layer of the skin. - The inner layer of the skin, it is
- This layer helps you to protect above the layer of fat.
your skin. - It includes the nerves, blood
vessels sweat glands, hair and
oil glands.
 Pores – Are openings that allows sweat to reach the surface.
 Follicles – The strands of hair that grow within the dermis.

Healthful habits that promotes proper functioning of the Integumentary system:

 Bathe every day and wash your hands regularly. Keep your skin and nails clean
to prevent infections.
 Apply sunscreen before you spend time outdoors.
 Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and fish. Remember to stay hydrated by
drinking plenty of water.
 Avoid wearing things that are too tight on your body
 Don't smoke cigarettes. Smoking causes wrinkles and ages your skin.

 Respect for one’s body

III. Learning Activities

A. Daily Routine
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
B. Review
C. Checking of Assignment

D. Developmental Activities

1. Engage

1.1 Motivation
“Guess the word”

Mechanics:
The class will be divided into two groups, each group should have two
representative. The first student will be facing at the front and the one
who will be guessing the word while the other student will be the one to
write some words at the back of his/her classmate. Within 2 minutes, the
group with the most guess word will be the winner.

1.2 Raising of Problem

o What is the integumentary system?

2. Explore
o What does the skin protect?

3. Explain

o What are the functions of the integumentary system and how they work
together?
o What are the ways that makes muscular system healthy?
o What is the purpose of the fat in the skin?
o What structures in the skin detect sensations on the skin?

4. Expand/Elaborate

4.1 Verifying the concept

4.2 Application

In a one whole sheet of paper draw and complete the graphic organizer.
