Counselling Session Flow Report

1.0 Pre-planning
Firstly, we had to identify a target group with a common problem to be our clients. Since
we were teaching two separate classes of different standards, we have chosen to observe Year
4 pupils instead of those in Year 2. Our team consisted of two persons. So, one of us will be the
counsellor (Wendy) and the other one will record the video when the counselling session takes
place (Leo). We have chosen to conduct the session in the library as it is comfortable and
spacious. The session will be conducted in Malay Language.
2.0 Building Relationship
Based on our observations, there were two pupils who like to create problems especially
when they have the chance to sit next to each other. These two are best friends and they make
a perfect tag team, especially during examination. In fact, they were caught cheating twice
seeking for answers by passing notes to each other. We decided to approach them individually
in an informal setting such as during recess to start building a good rapport with them. This is
important so that we know the pupils background.
3.0 Analysis of Problem
Firstly, Wendy asked the pupils to introduce themselves briefly. Secondly, she stated the
purpose of the session and started to do the storytelling. We have chosen to use Storytelling
Therapy as an intervention in this counselling session. According to Friedberg (2004),
storytelling can facilitate case conceptualization and refresh stale sessions with creativity and
flexibility. We have decided to improvise the story of The Truthful Woodcutter which centers on
the value of honesty. Then, she asked several questions to get their opinions about the story.
After that, she summarized the story so that they are able to extract the moral value of the story.
4.0 Action Plan for Change
In this stage, she started off by showing video of a person cheating during examination.
Indirectly, it provided a smooth transition from the story into the real issue. Then, she asked the
pupils to do a written exercise. According to Sink (2005), written exercises are excellent for
getting members focused. In this case, she asked them to write about the things they like and

hate about examination. She also asked them about the pros and cons of cheating in
examination. By doing so, she was able to make them start thinking on what they have done
wrong during the previous examination.
5.0 Termination
Towards the end of the session, the counsellor recalled back the ending of the story. She
guided the pupils to relate the consequences of lying and benefits of being honest in the story
with real life situations.

After that, she concluded the session by addressing the value of

honesty. Before dismissing the pupils back to their class, she asked the pupils to reflect upon
their misbehaviour during the previous examination. This was done so that they can weight in
the severity of their misbehaviour and finally form a solution to prevent it from happening again.
