INTRODUCTION
Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University,
informally known as Indraprastha University, is a
public, professional university located in Delhi,
India. Founded in 1998 it is a teaching-cumaffiliating university which affiliates 84 colleges in
Delhi-NCR and has 15 schools and centers.
HISTORY
Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University was established as Indraprastha
University (IPU) on 28 March 1998 by the Govt. of NCT Delhi as a state
University. The university was named after the ancient mythological city of
Indraprastha, which features prominently in the Mahabharata epic. In 2001,
the university was officially re-christened as Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha
University (GGSIPU) after the Tenth Great guru of Sikhs Guru Gobind Singh.
PRESENT
The university has its campus in Dwarka being recently shifted from Kashmere
Gate. It is a new campus and spread over an area of 60 acres where a still
considerable portion is under construction. On Dwarka campus, the university
is running 10 schools and imparting professional education to more than 3000
graduate and post-graduate students.
FUTURE
The university has decided to set up School of architecture, planning and
design in Surajmal Vihar, East Delhi. For this purpose it has acquired 18.75
acres (77,000 m2) of land on which the construction is likely to start very soon.
The east Delhi campus of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University
(GGSIPU), which will be equipped with modern facilities including solar power
panels and geo-thermal cooling systems, it will be the first university campus
of East Delhi.
The Rs 285-crore campus, in the Surajmal Vihar area, is planned on the lines
of the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad.

THE VISION
The school envisions to evolve as a Centre of academic excellence. It plans to
develop a synergy between various conventional concepts, theories and
applications of architectural and the contemporary challenges in the area of
urban and Regional planning, Building Management, Technology and Ecology.
Thus minimizing risk and enhancing safety with focus on real life issues of
Habitat management.
The school has adopted the teaching method of learning by doing whereby
students are encouraged to critically reflect on contemporary challenges of
rapidly developing technology based society with emphasis on heritage,
conservation, development of new building typologies, critical issues of
environmental sustainability and evolution of new technologies. The esteemed
teachers of the school act as the guide and moderator to two-way teaching
learning process within the classroom. The students are actively engaged to
partake in relevant extra-curricular and co-curricular activities beyond the
classroom. The focus of the school is to produce architect with an astute sense
of responsibility and competence to face the evolving challenges of the society
in ever innovating manner.
The school being located in Delhi has an advantage of borrowing best of
the past and venture into most promising future. Further, it can draw the
best architectural and planning brains of the country. The school endeavor to
collaborate with other centers of eminent in the area of Architecture and
planning in the country and abroad.
INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES
Presently, the school is housed in the existing University Campus at
Kashmere Gate. It has independent Architecture studios; workshops etc. and
also have the benefit of sharing the Academic and Non-academic facilities,
amenities and expertise of other schools of the University. The school has a
separate library having approximate 5000 volumes and journals. The students
have an access to the Central Library also.
A world class infrastructure is in the process of creation at Universitys
East campus having 18.75acre land located at Surajmal Vihar for
housing the University School of Architecture and Planning; and,
alongside this School an Institute of Design has also been planned.

AIM
To develop the sustainable design solution for the project SCHOOL OF
PLANNING, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN, Guru Gobind Singh
Indraprastha University (GGSIU), East Delhi
OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT

To envisions the GGSIU philosophy of learning by doing academic


excellence and innovation through architectural design.
The objective of the design solution will be to achieve maximum
green building ratings.
Use of Passive Design techniques as per the climatic conditions to
achieve energy efficiency and comfortable indoor and outdoor
space.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

The project will involve construction of departments of


Architecture, Planning and Design together in single campus.
The building will house all the modern facilities.
The campus will be built as per the green building guidelines.

NEED OF THE PROJECT

Project Justification: The area has 40 per cent youth population


which is the highest in this constituency in comparison to others in
Delhi, hence university campus like this was the need of the
hour.
This will be the first university campus in east Delhi, where 80 per
cent students will be admitted from Delhi only

Plot Area: 18.75 acre, 7600m2
Irregular shape site with contours.

LOCATION:
Surajmal Vihar, East Delhi.

PROJECT COST:
285-crore.

SITE CONTEXT:

Site is located in the vicinity of the Yamuna sports complex, Kempinski


Ambience Hotel, Fun City Mall.
The site has a 500-metre faade along the main road and 80-metre faade
along Maharaja Surajmal road.
Is located adjacent to the Surajmahal Park and a vacant plot.
