Cubs Acquire Kyle Tucker

By Darragh McDonald | December 13, 2024 at 11:59pm CDT

The Cubs and Astros announced that they have made a trade that will send outfielder Kyle Tucker to Chicago, with infielder Isaac Paredes, right-hander Hayden Wesneski and prospect Cam Smith heading to Houston.

It’s a move that would have been completely shocking as recently as a few weeks ago. Tucker has been a key part of the Astros dynasty and one of the best players in baseball in recent seasons. But over the past few weeks, reports emerged that the Astros were willing to listen to offers on Tucker as they looked to balance their desire to compete with some financial concerns. It appears that talks ramped up quickly and Houston found an offer they considered too good to pass up.

Tucker, 28 in January, was one of many high profile draft picks that went on to be part of the championship nucleus in Houston. The club aggressively tanked last decade, using high draft picks to select players like George Springer, Carlos Correa, Lance McCullers Jr. and others. After failing to sign Brady Aiken, their top pick in 2014, they received a compensation pick in the 2015 draft. That gave them two of the top five picks in 2015, using the second overall pick to draft Alex Bregman and the fifth overall selection on Tucker.

Both picks were big successes, as Bregman and Tucker each established themselves as All-Star capable big leaguers. This deal now officially ends Tucker’s tenure in Houston and might poetically point to the end of Bregman’s as well. Houston decision makers have long pointed to re-signing Bregman, who is currently a free agent, as a top offseason priority. However, the two sides have reportedly remained far apart in negotiations and the pivot to Paredes might signal that Bregman won’t be coming back to Houston after all.

Tucker, 28 in January, hit 89 home runs over the 2021 to 2023 seasons. He hit exactly 30 in the first two of those campaigns and then 29 in the third. He also stole 69 bases in that time, had above average walk and strikeout rates and strong defense. His combined line in that time was .278/.353/.517, which led to a 138 wRC+, indicating he was 38% better than league average. In 2024, he missed about three months due to a shin fracture but his limited performance was even stronger. He hit 23 home runs in just 78 games and his .289/.408/.585 line led to a 180 wRC+.

Putting all of those traits together, Tucker was worth about five wins above replacement in each of the 2021-2023 seasons, per FanGraphs. In 2024, he racked up 4.2 fWAR even though he missed roughly half the year. His 19.1 fWAR over the 2021-2024 stretch puts him 13th among MLB position players, though he played fewer games than everyone ahead of him, thanks to that injury absence.

Unlike some other clubs, the Astros have shown a willingness to let their star players go get paid elsewhere. They did that with Correa, Springer and Gerrit Cole, who went on to sign with the Twins, Blue Jays and Yankees, respectively. That has aligned with a general reluctance to give out massive deals or pay the competitive balance tax. As shown in MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, Jose Altuve’s 2018 extension worth $157.5MM over six years is the biggest deal in franchise history, both in terms of years and dollars. The Astros went over the CBT line in 2020 but didn’t pay any taxes as the system was put on hold in the shortened season. 2024 was the first time they went over the line and actually had to pay the tax.

Coming into this winter, general manager Dana Brown suggested the club needed needed to “get a little bit creative” with the budget. Owner Jim Crane later pushed back on that stance a bit, but it appears the financial constraints are real. Reporting has indicated that the Astros made an offer to Bregman of $156MM but that he is looking for something closer to $200MM.

Tucker’s earning power next winter is likely to be even higher than Bregman’s is now. Bregman is going into his age-31 season now whereas Tucker will be going into his age-29 campaign next winter.

It’s possible the Astros decided they weren’t likely to get a long-term deal done with either player and explored trade talks with Tucker, with this offer ticking a lot of boxes for them. It clears Tucker’s salary, which MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects for $15.8MM, off the 2025 books. Redirecting those savings to Bregman is still possible but they’ve also found themselves a potential replacement in Paredes.

Over the past three years, Paredes has hit 70 home runs and slashed .234/.338/.437 for a 123 wRC+. He’s also bounced around the infield, though has been at third base more than anywhere else. His defense at the hot corner has been close to average but it’s still made him roughly a 3-4 fWAR player recently. He is projected to make $6.9MM via arbitration next year and can be controlled for two more seasons beyond that.

Going to Houston might be an especially good fit for him, given that most of his home run power comes via pulling the ball towards the field foul pole. As pointed out by Sarah Langs of MLB.com, his home run total of 19 in 2024 would have been 26 if he played all his games in Houston and could take advantage of the Crawford Boxes.

It’s still possible that Houston could re-sign Bregman and move Paredes over to first base, since the club is also looking for help there, but time will tell how viable that is. Houston could find cheaper solutions at first base and leave Paredes at third for the next few seasons.

The acquisition of Smith also provides the Astros with a potential third baseman for the future. He was just drafted by the Cubs with the 14th overall pick a few months ago and slashed .313/.396/.609 in his professional debut, getting into 32 games across three different levels, finishing at Double-A. If the Astros stick with Paredes at third, Smith could push him for the job in the coming years, with Paredes eventually getting moved across the diamond.

The Astros also add a bit of pitching depth in the deal via Wesneski. The 27-year-old has decent underlying rates thus far in his career but problems with the long ball have pushed lots of runs across the plate. In 190 innings thus far in his career, he has a 23% strikeout rate, 7.6% walk rate and 43% ground ball rate. But 35 home runs, a rate of 16.7% per fly ball, have led to a 3.93 ERA. If the Astros can help him keep the ball in the park, he can be a part of their pitching staff for years to come. He has less than two years of service time and can therefore be retained for another five seasons.

The club has plenty of question marks with its pitching right now. Each of McCullers, Luis Garcia, Cristian Javier and J.P. France missed all or part of 2024 due to notable arm surgeries, so each of those guys is a question mark heading into 2025. Framber Valdez is also a trade candidate in the same vein as Tucker, since he’s set to make an eight-figure salary and is one year away from free agency. Hunter Brown had an uneven season this year. Ronel Blanco was huge for Houston but is fairly limited in terms of starting experience. Spencer Arrighetti was decent in his rookie year but it’s hard to bank on him at this point.

In the bullpen, Ryan Pressly is another trade candidate. He’s set to make $14MM next year, the final season of his deal. Wesneski has worked both as a starter and as a reliever in his career, so he can help Houston in either department.

For the Cubs, it’s a lot to give up, and that’s especially true when looking back to their acquisition of Paredes. They just sent Christopher Morel, Hunter Bigge and Ty Johnson to the Rays a few months ago, getting Paredes ahead of the summer deadline. In a sense, they have given up those three players plus Smith and Wesneski in order to get just one season of Tucker.

But there are good reasons why they have paid such a price. The club has been hovering around .500 in recent years, having a squad full of good players but lacking in truly elite ones. They also possess a very strong pipeline of prospects, several of whom are pushing for major league playing time. They have shown a reluctance to pay top dollar for free agents, so a big trade has seemed like the best way for them to upgrade the roster.

Tucker certainly qualifies. As mentioned, he has been one of the best position players in the majors recently and immediately becomes the best player for the Cubbies. Perhaps the Cubs will look to work out an extension with Tucker but that would require a very notable contract, the kind they haven’t given out recently. Even if Tucker is only at Wrigley for one year, the Cubs will at least be able to recoup draft pick compensation by issuing him the qualifying offer after 2025.

In addition to that, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer is in the final year of his contract. With the Cardinals taking their foot of the gas pedal next year and the Reds and Pirates still struggling to come out of rebuilds, there’s a window for the Cubs to take a step forward, push the Brewers for the division and get Hoyer some extra job security.

It’s also possible that they won’t miss any of the pieces they gave up too much, even though they make a lot of sense for Houston. As mentioned, the Cubs have an excellent farm system. On Baseball America’s Top 100, they currently have six players on the list, which doesn’t even include Smith. Though it surely hurts to give up their most recent first round pick, the farm is still in good shape overall.

That farm might also be able to provide an immediate Paredes replacement. One of the club’s top prospects is Matt Shaw, who has played a bit of middle infield but a bit more at third.  He split last season between Double-A and Triple-A, slashing .284/.379/.488 for a 146 wRC+. If the Cubs feel Shaw is ready to make the jump to the majors, that may have made Paredes expendable. Wesneski is also a talented pitcher but he’s been squeezed from the rotation plans in Chicago and largely kept in a swing role.

It’s a huge move for both clubs and will surely lead to more, especially for the Cubs. They already had a crowded outfield mix even before adding Tucker into it. They also have Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki and Cody Bellinger, not to mention prospects Alexander Canario, Kevin Alcántara and Owen Caissie. They have reportedly been trying to work out a deal involving Bellinger or, to a lesser extent, Suzuki. Happ and Suzuki both have no-trade clauses, making them difficult to move. Bellinger has an opt-out after 2025, which also makes him a tricky trade candidate.

One way or another, a move from that group feels inevitable. The Yankees have been connected to both Tucker and Bellinger, so perhaps they will now focus more on the latter now that they didn’t get Tucker.

For the Astros, what’s still unknown is if the door is totally closed to Bregman. It certainly feels like that may be the case, though it’s not impossible to see a path back to Houston. RosterResource estimates their competitive balance tax number at $225MM, which is $16MM shy of next year’s $241MM base threshold. Signing Bregman would certainly push them over, though not by as much now that Tucker’s gone. They could also theoretically lower their number by trading Valdez or Pressly. Then again, they’ve been talking about signing a new deal with Bregman for two years without it happening, so perhaps this is the door finally closing.

It’s also unknown if Houston is content with its Tucker-less outfield. Yordan Alvarez is a strong hitter but often relegated to DH duties due to ongoing knee issues. Jake Meyers, Chas McCormick and Taylor Trammell are other options on the roster, along with utility types like Mauricio Dubón and Shay Whitcomb. The group obviously looks weaker without Tucker in it, so perhaps the Astros will look to bolster the group in the coming weeks and months.

Time will tell how the move plays out in the full offseason for both clubs. But for today, the Cubs have added a huge talent to the roster without giving up anything truly heartbreaking. The Astros have lost that huge talent but could have made up a decent amount of his value in the short term while clearly helping themselves in the long term.

Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reported this morning that the Cubs and Astros were “circling” on a deal involving Tucker, Paredes and Smith. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first mentioned Wesneski’s inclusion. Jeff Passan of ESPN first reported that the deal was done.

Just one good bat, and some better years from those that had terrible years. Of course, being the Pirates they won’t find that bat because they go for the leftovers.

Prayed have big problems on offense, but they could possibly have the third or fourth beast pitching staff based on talent in the NL.

No, the Pirates have one generational player and about a dozen good players. Even without Ortiz, they still have the best starting rotation the division.

Couldn’t disagree more. They’ve been a team full of ‘complementary players’ for several seasons, stuck at .500. This is a bold trade that needed to happen. He’s not Soto, but he’s the stud bat they haven’t had and badly needed. Paredes was never gonna be that guy. Wesnewski hasn’t taken the step forward they thought he’d take. Smith may end up being a star but he’s not one yet and they needed a big bump now.

If the Phillies or Yankees acquired Tucker than it would be a good deal since he would be the last piece to help their World Series

But the cubs have a gazillion problems and Tucker isn’t that final piece that makes the cubs a World Series team

AND they lost their starting third baseman

i disagree on that analysis. the cubs were a couple bullpen pieces and a consistent hitter away from really competing. this gives them that powerful outfielder they need. It frees up a 40 man spot, they will likely trade bellinger either for pitching help or 3b help. this likely signals that they are going to give shaw a shot at the hot corner.

I think the Cubs know what it will take to sign Tucker. $45M AAV present value, some sort of opt-out/escalator like they did with Imanaga and like the Mets did with Soto, and a contract that lasts until he is 37 or 38.

The Cubs need success, at least an NLCS run, in the next three years to keep the Ricketts’ real estate empire rolling. I think they will spend the money, and I won’t be surprised if regardless of Tucker’s protestations that they sign an extension before the Japan trip.

Shaw will prove to be a better third basemen. Hits with power, hits to all fields. Paredes basically gave away two thirds of the field as a dead pull hitter.

The Cubs are focused on payroll cutting. A Bregman deal doesn’t fit that narrative. Bregman should be looking for a $28 million+/year deal for 6 years or more @ 5 years or less I’d put him @ $31 million minimum. The Cubs aren’t touching that.

Totally agree that the ultimate value of this trade for the Cubs will come down to whether or not they extend Tucker, make the NLCS or better, or both.

Giving up Paredes was a no brainer though. They have top prospects at AAA knocking at the door, Shaw at the top, and had to find a place for them to play. They could all be flops, or one or more could be a star, but you never know until they get consistent and prolonged play in the bigs.

          Mariner and For Love:

Yes, trades are usually a gamble.

However, better to do something than nothing when sitting in limbo hell like the Cubs have been (will they or won’t they contend? Neither!) the past few years.

One thing that’s good is to unload Paredes while he still has value- I’ve always thought he’ll fizzle out fast.

And that’s trading for you. Knee-jerk, high-risk, feelings-laced moves that are usually really good or really bad. Rarely in between.

He turns 28 next month. So a contract will be from age 29-38, so 10 years. Present value AAV will be between Judge and Ohtani, so let’s call it $45M. So that’s 10/450 in terms of present value. Creatively, his agent can structure escalators and deferrals to take the total over $500M the way that Soto’s deal can escalate to $805M.

This is an overpay for one year by a desperate front office. The reason their competitive window closed so soon last time is because they make short sighted moves like this.

It’s a great one year win now trade. They gave up an awful lot of the future for him though. They would need to sign him to an extension to
Make it a good trade. And every report says he’s not interested in signing an extension.

I am happy for Cubs to give Asterisks Paredes and Hayden. Cam Smith looked good but if Cubs keep Shaw, Caissie and Hoerner than I can live with it, even like it.

The Cubs still need a late inning reliever, maybe two.

“Great move”? To pick up one or two wins for one year over what Paredes would have given them each of the next three years, plus giving up Wesneski, plus Smith?

The difference bt Tucker in 2024 and Paredes in 2023 was all of 0 point 4 fWAR. Houston has to be delighted with this return.

I think there’s an argument that Tucker is actually a better ballplayer than Soto. Soto has more bat, but it’s at least comparable and Tucker’s defense and base running far surpass Soto’s.

Tucker had a better OPS than Soto last year, is far better on defense, and steals bases. He is Soto-light. His WAR in 2024 was a hair below Soto even though Tucker missed significant injury time.

And Soto-light is damn good. Since Tucker has been in the league, only guys with names like Betts, Ohtani, Judge, etc. have a better OPS. The numbers don’t like.

Look at 2024 as an example

          Soto / Tucker

          Batting Average .288 / .289

          On Base Pct .419 / .408

          Slugging Pct .569 / .585

Disappointing return. SD did way better. 2 years of King and a prospect capable of headlining a Cease deal. Houston got a nice prospect. Cubs will get one too with QO. Not as nice but not bad. Paredes is solid but nothing special. Reliever is ok but not much value unless you can out develop the Cubs and Yankees. SD turned Soto who cost much more $ than Tucker into 2 years of 2 top rotation arms.

@Pads Fans There isn’t a competent projection system in the world that cares what players did five, six, and seven years ago, and the good ones routinely ignores four years back or at most weight them at around 10% of projections.

In any case forget Tucker if you want to go that route. Wrt Soto since 2018 Matt Chapman is 1.2 bWAR worse than Soto, Marcus Semien is 1.0 bWAR better than Soto.

Anyone paying $450m for a 5 WAR RFer turning 29 his first FA year is an imbecile. Tucker would have to put up 50 WAR for that deal to begin to show a profit. 40 if you assume a high inflation rate, 35 if you’re feeling especially generous.

That last figure would make Tucker a borderline HOFer—does anyone, ANYONE see him that way?

2025 will be Tucker’s age 28 season. The 1st year of his FA deal he will be 29. He won’t get 12 years. 10 years at $30 million AAV or maybe a little more is realistic unless he puts up a 7 WAR season in 2025. Either way he will not be returning to the Cubs.

For one year of Tucker they gave up 3 years of Paredes at about 3 WAR per, 5 years of Wesneski, and 6 years of Smith.

Thorpe was ranked #85 by MLB pre-season 2024
Cam Smith is ranked #73 and should rise in updates prior to the season.

I agree about King being more valuable than Paredes, but at the time of the trade he had just 9 starts with the Yankees and no one knew how well he would transition to full time starter.

The Padres got a HUGE return for Soto that propelled them into the playoffs.

The Astros got a huge return for Tucker filling 2 needs and getting a top prospect that is moving so fast that he could be their starter at 3B by the beginning of 2026.

Wesneski is basically one of the guys the Padres got, Jhony Brito. A swing man with an ERA around 4.

In MLB being 2/3 of the players does not equal 2/3 the money. I could see someone giving Tucker another 2 years and $400 million if he puts up another 5+ WAR season in Chicago. I have seen multiple projections and all have been between $330-352 million. With all the contracts going above the projections this offseason, I can see $400 million for him.

I think that Swanson at 7 years and $177 million was the largest contract the Ricketts have ever given out. Maybe Heyward, but I don’t remember if they were the owners yet then. I don’t believe they will go much beyond that for anyone.

I think Wesneski probably tops out as a solid setup guy if he lets that 4-seamer fly in the upper 90s like he’s capable w that frisbee sweeper.
He has the arsenal to be a starter but seems to fall in love with low-90s sinkers/cutters and has issues locating w all his pitches. The fastball/slider combo are legit.

He’s the 3rd GM in last few yrs to have dealt Paredes. It seems teams are a bit leery of him. I’d guess he outproduced his talent in 2023 and they see it’s unsustainable.

Wesneski going into his age 27 season has to look all that inspiring.

The big question that won’t b answered til this fall or years from now is Smith. If Cubs make some noise and advance to NLCS or WS it ll be a clear win. If they fall short of that who won this trade won’t be known til years from now and likely come down to what Smith becomes.

All things considered though I don’t see Hoyer’s job being in question at all right now.

Not just making a splash. Taking over the. Central Division pond if they add a couple more pieces. Dodgers looked primed for three more years, no reason for a large market team to wait for the Dodgers to age when they will reboot anyway. The key is picking the right prospects to retain, which were Caissie, Horton and Ballesteros.

The only way this trade makes ANY sense is if you think the Cubs are World Series contenders in 2025. Otherwise it’s what I think it is. A pitiful flail by an executive who’s on his last year and desperate to look like he knows what he’s doing. He doesn’t. He makes me sick.

Wesneski in college only once averaged a K per 9 innings. That was his brief 28 inning Senior yr where he got 30 Ks. The 3 years prior to that he was well under.

He was a little above a K per 9 across different levels of MiLB. In 3 yrs and 190 MLB innings he’s just under 1 K per 9(188 K’s) not bad but nothing spectacular.

The big issue is he’s going into age 27 season and has not been all that effective as a MLB starting pitcher. Just not seeing any reason one would be so excited about him. Nor do I see how you came up with “He’s done nothing but strikeout guys his whole life.” Unless you were making an assumption or just thought it sounded good. Im reality though that claim is utterly false. The guy went to Sam Houston State and was well below average as far as Ks.

I was not aware that a k per inning was not sufficient for me to call him a strikeout guy.
After your careful analysis of my simple passing statement, I can assure. you that I don’t feel any different. I looked at his stats before I made this post. I saw that he has averaged a strikeout per inning, for just about his entire career. I’m looking at the same stats you are, recognizing that a k per inning is a good marker. I’m not sure in what world that ISN’T good, but I am truly fascinated by your well thought out diatribe, trying to tear down such a simple ball talk statement.
A statement, which I stand by. He fits the profile of a possible late bloomer. Ignore him, do whatever you will; I simply propose that he’s a possible candidate to show more than what he’s done so far.

And I will stand by this til the cows come home: if you’re striking out 1 per 9 in the major leagues; you’re doing something right. Enough right that one of the great analytical teams in the history of the game wants to take a flier on you.

@Sodo You did not say his entire career, you stated his entire life. 3 years of his college career he was far from a K per inning pitcher.

I will stand by my original redponde,he had not been striking out opposing batters his while life.

Wesneski allowed a .219/.282/.377/.660 line against LHB last season with 4 HR in 124 PA against him. If that is getting pounded, can the Padres get 2 of him?

Tigers, Wesneski was drafted after his junior year at Sam Houston State. He was almost exactly average in college with a 7.0 K/9. NCAA average from 2017-2019 was 6.9 K/9. His 3.56 ERA was much better than the 4.33 NCAA D1 average for starting pitchers.

In the Majors he is just above average at striking out people with a 23.7% K rate vs the MLB average of 22.6%. His 3.93 ERA is better than the MLB average of 4.11 ERA over that time frame. Being just better than average is a good thing, not a bad thing.

He is coming home. He was born in Houston and went to college close by in Huntsville, Tx.

I have Hoyer somewhere in the middle. Ownership has kept them from spending like a huge city franchise. I think they should have got a top catcher and an established closer. The emergence of Shaw and Ballesteros made Cam Smith expendable. I like the deal for Tucker but I still only rate Hoyer middle of the pack.

Bowman will get a chance. Bellinger plays first. I can see Busch sliding over to either second or third as well. He was a second/ third baseman in the minors. Hoyer is trying to get impact players to add to the “nice” players the team already has. A team of nice players won 83 games last two seasons. Bowman has power and speed. Also plays the hot corner. It’s easy to see why they took him. Rare combination for a third baseman. Bowman or Busch at third. No reason to move Bellinger. He’s the first baseman. Suzuki is mostly a DH. With the new catcher other than who’s on third the defense is great.

I don’t say this often, but wow that is a great trade for the Cubs! Tucker fits their needs EXACTLY. They now have an inside track to resign Tucker long term without having given up a ton, plus can be compensated in 2026 if Tucker were to sign elsewhere.

Not exactly, since they currently have a log jam in the OF. We still need to see how they trade one of their extra OFers before we can fully analyze this deal. If they have to dump Bellinger for mostly just salary relief, that puts a damper on this first deal.

Why? They just upgraded RF with a player who’s better all around than Bellinger and Seiya. If they move Bellinger’s salary they have payroll space to upgrade that bullpen and/or another starter. I see no damper in that.

        • Lanidrac

Then they’ll have just wasted all the extra value they could’ve gotten for Bellinger instead if they weren’t forced into dumping him. It’s not just about what helps them but the price that the help costs.

Bellinger is easily worth some decent prospects and/or MLB pieces under normal circumstances, even if the Cubs have to throw in a few million, but the Cubs have lost most of their leverage now that everyone knows they have to trade one of their outfielders.

If all they can get for Bellinger is dumping most of his salary and a lottery ticker or two in return, that means that the overall cost of upgrading from Bellinger to Tucker + some extra money (while opening up a hole at 3rd base) is basically Bellinger + Paredes + Wesneski + a decent prospect, which is a HUGE overpay!

They needed a 1b and got one. Maybe they trade Valdez for Tucker replacement. This pitcher takes rotation spot. There’s still a few outfielders out there. Lots of pitchers.

I would have just kept Tucker if this was best I could do. But theoretically they could still contend.

This is the type of player that rich teams (like the Cubs) should build around.

He was drafted in July. You can count on your fingers the number of players that are drafted in July and are in AA in September. Prospects have to be really good to do that or play for an organization totally bereft of good prospects. The Cubs are not one of those organizations.

Watch for the MLB Pipeline prospect updates in January and if you subscribe look at the Baseball America updates that are starting to come out on a team by team basis now. Cam Smith will be somewhere between 40-50 overall on MLB Pipeline based on what Baseball America has said about him.

His initial scouting grades prior to playing in pro ball were Hit: 55 | Power: 50 | Run: 45 | Arm: 60 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55.

Baseball America has him graded higher in all of those except Run in the prospect updates following the season.

If you are an Astros fan, you should be excited about him being involved in the trade.

We could probably all agree that Tucker is easily worth more than both Paredes & Wisniewski for one season. The loss of Cam Smith is balanced by receiving a 2026 1st round Comp pick if Tucker signs elsewhere. The difference between a 2024 #1 (14) and 2026 #1Comp pick is worth the risk!

What do you mean? They are clearly ‘trying’ to compete. Their division isn’t strong, it’s not long ago they signed Dansby, they made the move for Paredes last deadline, re-signed Belli last year, signed Imanaga last year. While they could really use another front-line pitcher, they’ve clearly been trying to consolidate offensive talent to improve the overall potential of the roster. They probably should be in on Burnes, Cease, and Castillo but the offense was a clear, and likely less costly, priority.

Giants would like Belli, Dbacks would like Belli, not just Yankees. Maybe even Mariners. It all depends how much cash is in deal. The team that can send black a Kate inning reliever or a solid starter has an edge, it no return is required if the Cubs only have to chip in a couple millions. The leverage situation favors the Cubs. They could even keep Belli and trade Suzuki, but the price for Suzuki will be much higher.

The Giants don’t need Bellinger, especially if he opts in next season. He might be a fit at $10M less, but he’s still not the answer to a need. Another OF wouldn’t be bad for them to get, but they could address that a lot cheaper, without giving up prospect capital.

I am thinking the Cubs will chip in more like $5 million and expect an irrelevant player in return. I am guessing Eldridge will be ready in 2026. But Belli is also an upgrade on Lee and Yaz. No evidence that Matos or Luciano are ready this April. The question here is money, not prospect capital. Same for Yankees and Dbacks. Now in the case of Mariners, the question is would the Cubs send a couple prospects with Belli and/or Hoerner to net Castillo.

Bellinger is only worth about $15M per year. $5M wouldn’t cut it. He isn’t really an upgrade on Lee, because Bellinger isn’t a CF anymore, especially with that field at Oracle. Not that he was ever great there.

Based on last season he isn’t even much of an upgrade on Yaz.

          Bellinger, 111 OPS+, 2.2 bWAR.
          Yastrzemski, 110 OPS+, 2.1 bWAR.

For the production they’d get, for what Bellinger would cost, isn’t worth it. The money would be better spent elsewhere.

Plus, they need to get Matos playing time. He won’t turn 23 until January. People were ready to give up on Ramos prior to last year, and he’s 2 years older than Matos. They need to see what they have in him.

I hope Matos succeeds, but I don’t think the Giants will have him on the Opening Day roster.

Belli OPS+ to Yaz OPS+ in 2023 was 139 to 114, so Belli has more upside, but maybe the Yankees are a better fit, due to Belli’s ability to play 1B or all three outfield spots. I agree hat CF at Oracle is tougher.

Bellinger does have more upside, but over their last 3 seasons Bellinger’s OPS+ was 111, and Yastrzemski’s was 105. My point being that that upside isn’t worth the difference in salary. Bellinger is set to make $18.25M more than the projected arb raise for Yaz. I’m not sure it would be worth it even if the Cubs ate $10M. And if they ate that much, they’d want something in return.

Matos could make the opening day roster if he has a great spring, but probably not if they acquire another OF. It will be interesting to see if they do, or don’t. What they do will be indicative of how they feel about Matos I think.

Aloha Jersey, I’m all for bold moves. But not sacrificing young talent that they should have kept, evaluated a little more and for a rental? I would have been okay if it were Paredes and say Alcantara, Triantos just not Shaw or Cam. Then Shaw can start at 3rd next year and in the near future Cam comes up and Shaw moves to 2nd. Cubs aren’t going to resign Tucker under this current ownership, largest deal given so far is JHeys $184mil. Tucker will want $400+ not happening by the Ricketts. Now we see what happens with Cody. Aloha 100, as I have said to many, no problem at all in trading Paredes. But I thought if he was moved, than Shaw would start there, then move to 2nd when Nico goes, hoping that Cam Smith would be ready to take over at 3rd. This is so much capital to spend on a one year rental. This Cubs ownership’s largest contract was to JHey for $184mil. I don’t see them spending $400+ mil to keep Tucker around. No issue with Tucker’s worth. But this is a type of move made when a team is close to competing for a championship like the 2015 was. This current Cubs team isn’t close and for Hoyer who hasn’t made many moves, this seems desperate. But I hope for the best and await the FO’s upcoming moves. Mahalo!

I wouldn’t expect Cubs to pursue Bregman. They have Shaw and some young players to try. If all else fails, there’s always the trade deadline. Of course more deals to be made w Belli and possibly Seiya. Not crazy to think they could still target a Bohm or someone to take the position, but it further blocks prospects.

I think Cubs need to trade some OFers for pitching depth and maybe a closer or LH RP.

Not with the way the market evolved this year. And i dont think tucker was ever really interested in resigning. The astros picked up a solid 1b/3b and a first rounder from last year who absolutely raked in the minors in exchange for a rental player.

Love and hate this for the Astros. Hate it as they likely are losing Bregman and two big bats out of their line up and will struggle some now competing in the AL West. Love it from the fact that they got Parades to replace Bregman at 3B and he is under team control for another 3 seasons. I get it from the Cubs standpoint, they are in a division that is up for grabs and this should help them against their competition.

Dodgers already have Yamamoto and Ohtani on LT deals. If it’s about most influential Japanese players on the team Sasaki is already going to the Dodgers. Having Suzuki would be a factor but still don’t know what Sasaki actually wants from his future team.

Suzuki is a nice option for the Dodgers if Teo doesn’t work out. Injury prone but a solid and consistent RH OF bat. Less pop than Teo but higher OBP. Hopefully this Tucker deal pushes Cubs to trade Suzuki.

As a Dodgers fan, I am uncomfortable with the idea of a multi-year deal for Teoscar. Pages, Rushing, and Suzuki sharing time in the corner OF spots would be my preference.

Personally don’t like this trade with no extension in hand. Cubs have a ways to go to be playoff relevant and this is more a move you make when you’re a serious contender. Which sadly I dont believe they are. Now I have no idea who plays third. That was a black hole last year as well.

He absolutely destroyed the ACC last year. Great control of the strike zone to go along with a quick swing with big power.

He was the guy I most wanted the Angels to draft last year as third base is a perpetual problem here.

Nice move by the Cubs. Paredes was nothing special, Wesnewski showed flashes of both brilliance and uselessness. But he’s still got time to figure it out, plus he’s a Houston native. Smith is the wild-card; will he turn out to be Mike Schmidt, or Gary Scott? Time will tell. Now the deck is cleared for Gabe Workman/Miles Mastrobuoni to be the opening day 3b while Matt Shaw gets a soft landing for the month of April. And, I’m betting that Hoyer has a deal in place for Bellinger with the Yankees that will be announced within hours.

I will get laughed at but why can’t the Pirates make a move like this? Actually acquire a very good hitter, not an old guy or someone on a rebound. Just go for it while you have the pitchers. Instead of spending 20m on garbage, just get a good player.

Because acquiring 1 year of a very good hitter in a trade requires giving up talent and doesn’t make sense for them. They aren’t 1 hitter away from contention in 2025 and they have several spots they can improve on without making a consolidation trade like this one represents for the Cubs.

Cubs have a lot of 2-4 win players and needed a ceiling raiser. Pirates have a lot of 1-2 win players and need those players to either improve or be replace with better talent before a 1 year rental like Tucker would make sense.

Just look at the standings. The Cubs were 7 games better than the Pirates last year with some underperformance on the roster. They also had a +67 run differential to the Pirates -74. These rosters are in very different spots competitively. Just getting a good player for 1 year isn’t going to move the needle for the Pirates outside of some jersey sales.

        Very well said.
Now while I do wish they would spend more, even to 100m dollars to get a nice core, I was entirely confused with Tucker. For some reason, I thought he was under a long term deal and the Astros just needed to shed payroll. Had no idea he’s on his last year. I agree, would not be optimal to trade for a player like that. Cubs are closer than the Pirates but they hung around last year with a bad offense and great pitching. If their pitching regresses a little, and they have even an average offense and bullpen, no reason they can’t hang around for the wild card.

Definitely my concern but none of those pieces looked to be particularly helpful to the Cubs in ‘25. They weren’t developing Wesneski and Paredes was terrible as a Cub.

If they manage to get an extension or if this gives them the inside track to match the best FA offer and they’re willing to spend big to keep him, it will be completely worth it.

Curious to see what’s next now that the Cubs will have 3 All-Star caliber RFs on the roster.

If the Cubs win the division and get knocked out by a better team, I am still ok with the deal. If Shaw is at 3B, the Cubs still have lots of candidates for 1B and DH. I prefer Ballesteros 0r Caissie as the DH over Cam Smith.

The only question is whether trading Cam Smith for a young but not elite pitcher with multiple years of control would have been a better move.

I had far greater regret in trading Jackson Ferris for Michael Busch. And at the time, I did not realize how good the guy was that the Cubs sent along with Ferris.

They will have Caissie ready in 2026 to replace Tucker. They will have Shaw at 3B. As long as Busch or PCA do not regress, they do not need Cam Smith. Ballesteros can DH when Suzuki and Belli are both gone. Catcher and closer are the weak links remaining.

Yankees chose to go with a Cortes base for Devin instead of a Gil base for Tucker from the SP surplus. We’ll see how that shakes out.

Cubbies kept Shaw and still have Suzuki as a trade chip. Solid job for the rental, outstanding if they can somehow pull an extension.

In light of said Williams deal, I’m good with it. I was all for Gil + for Tucker, but once Cortes went I knew we must have been out on Tucker and I’m fine with that. Keeping the ROY with control and more upside is a win–though who knows if something else will be in the works.

Looks like the Phils blew a golden opportunity by not signing Tucker. It also looks like the Cubs are flush with outfielders and ready to deal a few. The Cubs should consider trading Bellinger and Suzuki to the Phils for Schwarber and Walker. This would upgrade the Cubs’ DH and provide a quality starter who may just need a change of scenery to get his game back on track. It would solve the Phils’ outfield problems and possibly open up an additional line of communication to facilitate the acquisition of free agent pitcher Sasaki.

bucket, The Phils will have no problem trading Walker. He’s still a quality starter who only needs a change of scenery and more gratitude than the Phils have shown him. I would like to see Schwarber traded because the Phils would be much better with a DH-by-committee (Harper, Realmuto, Turner, Castellanos, Bohm, Sosa, etc.) than they are with a $20 million-a-year player who can’t play any defensive position reliably, thwarts their running game when he gets on base, always has a low batting average, strikes out more than 99% of the players in MLB, and is a free agent after 2025. Schwartber began his career with the Cubs and undoubtedly still has a following that would like to see him return to Chicago. I paired Schwarber with Walker because the salaries sort of match those of Bellinger and Suzuki.

The Phils can replace Walker with Painter right now or, if they acquire Suzuki and he helps with recruiting, they may able to acquire Sasaki who, after Soto, may represent the biggest prize in the current offseason.

Top 100, There’s not much to really like about a one-year rental, especially when it costs as many players as the Cubs traded. But who knows? Tucker may learn to like deep-dish pizza and decide to settle in Chicago, and the players moving to Houston may make the Astros stronger. Walker has a lot more in the tank than people realize. Philly’s not the town for him, especially since he was embarrassed by not being used a single time in the 2023 playoffs. Ballesteros may be able to DH in 2026, but the Cubs don’t have anybody better than Schwarber to DH in 2025.

That’s probably the end of Bregmans time with the Astros. Paredes is a 3rd, or second baseman and we know who’s at 2nd. Paredes swing is built for that park.

The Cubs had 7 position players in the top 10 prospects, most of them at AAA and AA. They can’t find room on the 13 position player roster for all of them in the next two years. Meanwhile, Paredes is replaceable because he’s useless at Wrigley when the wind is blowing in. Give Shaw the everyday job at 3B and bat him 7th and get going.

Many posters here dontrealize how Wrigley played last year; and who is to say it won’t continue to?

Only T-Mobile was friendlier to pitchers in 2024. Paredes’ game plays perfectly in Houston, but not in last year’s Wrigley. Give me line drive hitters like Tucker and Shaw to marry with Seiya and Hoerner.

Don’t be shocked to see Yoan Moncada sign a pillow contract to pair with Shaw. They also snagged Gage Workman in the rule 5 as a lefty who plays 3B and runs very well.

Hoyer isn’t done yet. It will be interesting to see how much they pay down Bellinger’s contract to improve the return from the Yankees.

I would be stunned to see Moncada. Whether it was some sort of illness or not, he looked like he just didn’t give a bleep the last two years and I don’t think they want that in their clubhouse.

Great trade for the Astros, they solved both their high dollar free agency dilemmas, sending Tucker out of town and adding a pair of third baseman, all but guaranteeing Bregman won’t be resigned.

Unsure what there plans will be to resolve their outfield, it was soft with Tucker in the fold. Altuve, Alvarez, Parades, Diaz and Pena is a decent group but don’t see much production coming from the bottom half of the Astros lineup.

The pitching looks good, Valdez/Brown/Garcia/Verlander/McCullers Jr., can move both Arrighetti and Blanco to the pen if you resign JV and McCullers finds a way back from injury.

Astros look a little choppy in ’25 but likely a good move for them passing on a long term deal with both Tucker and Bregman.

Barring a QO return when Tucker hits FA the Cubs could’ve DFA’d all players involved on their side of the trade and been in the same shape for 2026. This trade does nothing for the Cubs but unload a top prospect and players with multiple years of team control.

So as an Astros fan I absolutely hate to see Tucker leave. But if we are to be honest, there is no WAY the Astros were going to keep Tucker after next year. He will get at least $300 million and absolutely deserve it. Now the Astros have Paredes who is a pull hitter akin to Bregman with 3 years of control and also is considerably cheap all things considered. The pitcher they got was widely in the talks of having the best potential “stuff” in their pitching department, and also getting a top 100 prospect is something the Astros haven’t had in a while. Short term I am sad, but I know in the long run it will overall be better

D for Houston. Lost elite player. I like Smith but they could have got a comp pick that would be close enough. Got a well above average 3b for few years. Upside arm. Already ok but could be better with right coach. Better off rolling with Tucker give him QO. Sign a reliever. It’s a fair trade. D is a win. D for disappointing return. Needed to get lil better prospect or ditch reliever for a another prospect.

A Chicago. They got a stud. And gave up nothing that’s not easily replaced. Should have cost a better prospect. Wesneski wasn’t doing it for them so little value other than trade chip.

I think this is actually good for Houston, not for 2025 obviously though. Astros were put into a very bad spot with the Montero and Abreu contracts basically putting them $30 million down in wasted money. Paredes is a good 3B who can also potentially play 1B should the Astros resign Bregman. This will free up $10 million. Astros also have a dogshit farm system so getting a top 100 is a big plus. The pitcher has potential, and the Astros are a franchise known for pitching development so we will have to see. Paredes has 3 years of team control left which is the biggest thing.

For Mookie Sox got Verdugo who similar value to Paredes and I believe 2 more years so more value actually. Top 100 as well. And Wong. But Mookie cost more $ and a big and dumped David Price on them. Soto got King who was much more valuable than Paredes. And a prospect some gms believed good enough to headline a Cease trade. Again Soto more $. Tucker just as good and cheaper. And it’s a much more expensive market. Never been a better time to be a seller than the year 2024. Houston did just well enough to make the trade. Solid 3b for 3 years. Ok reliever with ability to be better. A mid 1st round pick. It’s enough to make the trade. Just a lil light to me.

I think the yanks dropped the ball here.. Gil had an insane first half and his second half again imo is probably closer to what he actually is as a player.. hard thrower with no regard for location or accuracy .. in a year and a half he’ll prob be dealt for junk and no one will remember him.. remember angular and Sanchez were nearly ROY and look what happened.. injuries and the league caught up.. Gil won ROY in a weak rookie class .: I don’t foresee this being the right trade for the yanks .. again no guarantee Tucker stays long term.. but you know what Tucker is and he would be a good Soto replacement in the outfield.. better defender and base runner .. less home runs and obp.. we don’t know what Gil is and with the Yankees track record of not being able to develop pitchers .. a non proven commodity is a high risk on a win now team trying to bounce back from an embarrassing World Series loss

Sad to see Tucker go but I understand the move. On Bregman will be hard to see him go but he is older. Tucker will command a huge salary after this year. Crane is not one that wants to go over the Luxury Tax lines. Not a lot of teams can. Yankees, Boston, Mets, Dodgers seem to be strong ones that do.

But outfield now for Houston is a disaster. Yordan is not great in outfield. Yes he can play but those great plays Meyers can make them but no offense. Chas not good either. He had one decent season. Houston needs to look for outfield. This pitcher not sure on him even with all our unknowns with starters. Brown, Blanco, Arrighetti. If Framber is up for grabs and McCullers, Javier, France, Garcia are all still hurt as Javier and France probably would be late in Season. McCullers need to dump. Garcia has not started anything yet to work his arm up or anything. So if Framber goes
Also this Brice Matthews is he outfield I forgot but doubt is ready yet.
First base not sure what we do. Caratini and Singleton and Dezenzo. think may be our mix.
But we shall see if any other moves for Astros between now and February when have to report to Florida. But I do wish Tucker well for this year in Chicago.
I still think Bregman is gone with this move.
I also wonder if Astros will send Pressly out.
But hope Tucker is good for the Cubs and to the Cubbie fans take care of him.

Cubs were 83-79 the past two seasons. They have a lineup full of “good” hitters, but lacked star power. Tucker in the middle of the already “good” lineup, makes them very formidable in the NL Central.

The Brewers have lost Adames, and Devin Williams.. Cardinals are in a rebuild, and Pirates have potential but plenty of wholes. Not sure what to expect from the Reds again.

I think the Cubs payed very steeply for one year of Tucker who will likely be a $400m player next year.

The Astros got an excellent player in Paredes who can play 3rd, a starting pitcher plus the Cubs first round pick in 2024.. Nobody was going to top that.

It is a bold win now move for the Cubbies but they paid a steep price in my opinion.

Smith might be the prize in this trade but if Tucker delivers then it is a win for the Cubs.

I don’t mind paying this or even more than what they paid for Kyle Tucker as long as they re sign him. The cubs organization is a large market financially top 5 in baseball, and have yet to dabble into the 200 million range, so to think they will pay the 3,4,500 million whatever it will take to sign Kyle Tucker is a pipe dream. 4 years of control on Perades and at least 7 on Cam for cubs fans sake I hope this years is when they finally choose to break that mold.

The Phillies offered them Bohm, Castellanos & Abel for Tucker & Pressly. They shoulda took that deal, woulda saved them approx. 7 million this season, gave them a suitable RF to replace Tucker and the corner INF’er they desperately need. Plus a shot in the arm to their farm system. Oh well ‍♂️

og, Are you sure the Phillies really made that offer? There’s much in the news that would suggest otherwise. GM Dombrowski has publicly said Bohm was going nowhere and manager Thomson publicly stated the Phils were not trading Bohm. What cinches the deal is the fact the Astros were only trying to trade Tucker to save the money for their planned resigning of Bregman. If they were planning to resign Bregman, why would they need Bohm? What’s more, if they were only trading Tucker as a salary shedding measure, why would they take on Castellanos who will be making $20 million a year for the next two years? There’s little chance the Phils would trade Bohm, Castellanos and Abel in one trade for one player. I seem to recall a recent story online that mentioned this trade as a possibility, rather than a done deal.

HOU didn’t value those players as much as the players they got in the CUB deal.
HOU is trying to lower payroll, they don’t want Castellanos he would be a short term fix, he is older, below average defensively and has a hefty contract. Bohm is a complementary player who also has defensive issues and he might have a reputation/attitude teams want to stay away from.

I think there is more than a 70% chance HOU trades both Framber and Pressley (with some $ 3M?) now
      Probably not together but maybe.

I definitely think HOU has moved on from Bregman and believe he will sign with DET which should work out well for team and player. Alex has to accept $180M or he will have to find another team.

TOR maybe. I don’t think he signs with NYY or NYM.

Possibly PHI if they trade Bohm and Suarez

Cubs fill a hole they don’t have in the outfield by creating two more holes. I get that Tucker is a good player – better than their current options – but trading for a year of an outfielder when you have your outfield filled makes no sense. It makes less sense when you trade away a young, controllable third baseman and pitcher. It makes absolutely no sense now that you’ve pretty much told the world you have to trade Bellinger to fill your roster holes, when Bellinger already has negative value due to his bloated contract for the next two seasons versus his lack of production. It’ll be interesting to see how much of that deal they’ll have to eat over the next two years just to get a piece back. Probably more than 75%.

I think so too. Smith is going to be a stud and Paredes is Bregman-lite. He will fill in ably until Smith is ready in 2026. Wesneski strengthens the Astros bullpen. Now they need to find an OF because Alvarez will not hold up for a full season out there.

The Cubs received a VERY good OF that: they didn’t need, that will be a FA at the end of 2025, and that was injured more than half of last season for a starting 3B whose stats show he will be even better playing in Houston’s ballpark, a decent swingman/5th starter, and a top 100 prospect that will be the starting 3B in Houston as soon as the start of 2026. The Astros got a huge return for Tucker.

Tucker is a great player, but the Cubs didn’t have a need in the OF unless they are trading Suzuki. Bellinger didn’t really factor in the OF, so trading him won’t matter much.

Giving up Wesneski was not a big deal, he is a swingman, but Paredes was supposed to be the Cubs starting 3B so that opens up a hole in the roster.

Paredes is a 25 year old Bregman-lite and Cam Smith is going to be Bregman’s long term replacement in Houston once he is called up in late 2025 or early 2026.

I don’t understand this trade from the Cubs end, but Tucker will be great for them and the Astros scored big time with 3 years of Paredes and Smith probably ready to take over for him in 2026.

Paredes will fit quite well but Wesneski will need to prove himself, and I don’t get the Cubs’ excitement in Smith. The guy has barely played a handful of games in AA and each time he has been promoted from A to A+ to AA his numbers have gone down. I don’t see anything special there.
Cubs clearly won this trade, but with Dana Brown as GM we had to expect that.

In those 2 months and 115 PA he hit .313/.396/.609/1.004 in the first time he had ever seen professional pitching. He is already the #73 prospect in baseball. YouTube has lots of videos. It’s seems pretty difficult to see how the Cubs are going to come out ahead.

In addition, it makes me wonder why they traded for Paredes in the first place. It’s like they threw in two guys that will likely be good RPs or better, for nothing. And how badly did they need another RF to start with? Suzuki had a pretty good year. Not as good as Tucker, but I doubt they are getting 3 more wins, if that.

Typical Chicago/Cubbie move. Overpay to get a guy with a year left on his current contract. Cubs fans are easy—they’ll get excited. Then Tucker will leave during the offseason next year, and the Cubs will take two steps back. They’d rather rely on young/unproven players than pay proven studs like Tucker long term. If I’m proven wrong, I’ll eat the crow. But I’ve been a Chicago sports fan long enough to know how these teams operate. Winning is not the priority in Chicago-town.

Hoyer must be think the cubs can sign Tucker to an extension if not trade at the deadline depending on the standing or put a qo and prospect if Tucker walks however hoyer strikes out as prospects take time to develop, they just traded a good one.

Would have been a great pickup, but the price tag was far too high: three seasons of a 3-4 fWAR 3Bman as the centerpiece for one season of a 4-5 fWAR RFer (4.5-5.5 fWAR is you want to split wars) plus a couple of interesting lottery tickets.

You only do this if 1-2 marginal wins is what you desperately need, and you’re willing to create a hole on your roster for 2026-27.

Phillies were too smart for this.

JackStrawb, I wouldn’t say there’s a strong market for Bellinger. Multiple teams have some interest, but they have to be wary of his salary as well as the inconsistency. In the current situation, I just don’t see that many teams willing to take on that salary, which the Cubs say they don’t want to eat any of. That could just be posturing of course.

But him being worth only about $15M-$18M, are the Cubs willing to eat almost $9M to over $12M, just to save money? Are other teams willing to give prospects on top of assuming as much as $17M? Plus the opt-out complicates things.

I could be wrong, but I see a trade of Bellinger as being very difficult. I think he stays with the Cubs and they trade Suzuki. Even if they pay down significant salary, I don’t think they’re getting much in return. He’s a fit on a couple of teams, like the Yanks, but the best fit might be back with the Cubs.
