Remember when you used to spend hours sifting, piling and digging in the sandbox with your friends? Now that you’re older you may want to share that experience with your little one to encourage imaginative, outdoor play. Of course, you might be surprised to find so many sandbox designs to choose from, so take a moment to consider a few key points before you bring one home for your child.

What size sandbox should I buy?

The size of your sandbox depends on who will be using it. Will it just be your child and a couple of friends, a large group of neighborhood kids or you and your child both? If your child won’t need to share their sandpit with others, a smaller size will do. If you plan on hopping in and building a few castles or if siblings and friends might join in the fun, look for larger styles.

What materials are best for sandboxes?

Most sandboxes are made from plastic or wood. Plastic is by far the safest, plus it’s easy to move and clean. Plastic sandboxes can be found in dozens of fun shapes and colors, as well, making them a great, affordable choice. Wooden sandboxes tend to have a higher quality than plastic styles, and are weather-resistant. However, the wood may splinter and you should avoid any sandboxes created with chemically treated wood.

Where should our sandpit be placed?

Look for a location where your child will be safe while he or she plays in the sandbox, and be sure that you can easily view it from your house. Your sandpit should also be set on top of a flat surface and away from any plants.
