      Felt Like a long drawn out start however I’m new to fantasy so to each is own. I don’t feel gripped like I have to read book two ASAP so ill trad something else and debate it.

      The book was both gripping and as it lulled you into the story it pulled you into it deeper. My favorite part was the old innkeeper recalling his life and all the adventures.

      This was a very good book. I immediately devoured the second book also. It will be a long wait until book three comes out in 2013.

      SPOILER WARNING!


      I fund it hard to keep reading about a person who repeatedly justifies cheating and stealing and going around the rules, but is the hero it all works for. This book reminds me if the Harry Potter series. It's all OK because he had an ugly childhood. As this character walks through life I cringe seeing what I'd coming.
      I'm sure it all comes around in the rest of the series, in fact he says as much. But I'm out.

      A fun book to listen to, it really came to grow on me. Told as a story within a story, the world is filled with wonder and mystique that kept me hooked. The storyteller style really lends to the tone of the book, and it feels like you're getting a look behind the curtain into how folktale and legend come to exist.

      Rothfus is a phenomenal story teller. The book literally has stories within stories within stories that all feel real and earned. Sympathy is also one of the most realistic "magic" systems I've ever read. Highly recommend

      The story ends up going in a pretty different direction from where it started, and that's a good thing because I almost gave up on listening to the book after the first few chapters. I started paying more attention once Kvothe starts telling the story of his youth and his experiences at the university, which I found much more compelling than the brief returns to the "present" day with Kvothe in hiding at an inn. But I suppose those elements set the foundation for the series, as they make the reader wonder how Kvothe came to that position.

      I do find some of Kvothe's decisions irritating at times, particularly when they're borne out of arrogance rather than his obvious intelligence, but that may simply be a factor of his young age. I also didn't quite understand the depth of Ambrose's animosity towards Kvothe and found him to be a somewhat flat and predictable character (not unlike Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter). He's just there to be the main character's nemesis.

      As an instructor of writing and rhetoric, I particularly enjoyed the fact that Kvothe has studied rhetoric, both with his father when he was growing up and also at the university. He also ends up being pretty skilled in the art of persuasion.

      The story just kind of meanders without direction through side streets that have no real bearing on the overall story. It's well written and very descriptive but full of fluff. It's still worth a listen or reading.

      Wow! I can see why leading lights in the Fantasy community are in love with this book. It's a huge novel physically, though not as big, I suspect, as Brandon Sanderson's enormous The Way of Kings Book One. Rothfuss' talent is the really massive draw here. His use of language is beautiful and his sense of what makes an epic story is unerring. The characters have that spark of life that will keep you reaching for the book. I agree with one of the reviewers quoted on the jacket: you do worry about what's happening with the characters when you put it down. I also love the world he's created and how he worldbuilds--the world in interesting, and you only get to know a bit of it at a time. Give it a try. Bet you'll also join the legion of other readers waiting for the promised sequel!

      I loved the story - and I especially loved the way the author approached the story. For me it was refreshing. However, I didn't realize the last third (more like half) doesn't exist! And from what I have now discovered, may never exist :(. This was very disappointing to learn. If I had known this, I probably would never have even started this. Sort of like Game of Thrones. When the author is unable to finish, it can turn a wonderful, beautiful story into something very unsatisfying, and even painful to behold (exhibit A: GoT last two seasons).
