About this audiobook
In a quiet village in the Shire, young Frodo is about to receive a gift that will change his life forever.
Thought lost centuries ago, it is the One Ring, an object of terrifying power once used by the Dark Lord to enslave Middle-earth. Now darkness is rising, and Frodo must travel deep into the Dark Lord’s realm, to the one place the Ring can be destroyed: Mount Doom.
The journey will test Frodo’s courage, his friendships and his heart. Because the Ring corrupts all who bear it—can Frodo destroy it, or will it destroy him?
'The English-speaking world is divided into those who have read The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and those who are going to read them.'—Sunday Times
This brand-new unabridged recording is narrated by the acclaimed actor, director and author, Andy Serkis.

I love this book! I love how descriptive Tolkien is - great at world building. I love that he takes the time to explain the lore in the middle of the story so that we can better understand the significance of what is happening. Gandalf's sass makes me laugh every time. But my favorite character is Sam Gamgee! I adore him. I want to hug him and squeeze his little hobbit cheeks. He is so dedicated and trustworthy that I am currently convinced that the success of this mission will depend on him and his faithfulness to Frodo. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Tolkien is the greatest author of the 20th century, and one of the greatest of all times.
Also I must admit that I was dubious about Andy Serkis as a narrator...but he may indeed have surpassed Martin Shaw! I particularly enjoyed his renditions of the many songs. Very well done, good sir. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

The Fellowship of The Ring (Pretty damn good. I like all the history, it's a fully realized world. Tom Bombadill sucked ass and that part was way too long.) - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Now I recall why I have not re-read the LotR in 40 years. It isn't solely the interminable poems and songs. It is the _endless_ trivial details (which direction someone walks, for example) that have no real bearing on the outcome of the plot or the development of the characters. I know this is a beloved classic and all us fantasy fiction fans owe Tolkien a great debt of gratitude. But jeez, a strong editor sure could have tighted this thing up. (Horrible thought: one did so. Tolkien's original was even longer!) - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

This is really the first volume of a single novel divided into three volumes for publishing purposes, so it’s probably more appropriate to review the whole thing than to review each volume separately.
However, I suppose this first volume is my favourite. Because, although it has various scenes of darkness and danger, overall it seems the most cheerful of the three; and also because Gollum doesn’t appear in it, although he’s mentioned now and then.
To avoid double-counting, I’ve listed here only the times when I’ve read this volume without reading the other two. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

This is not my usual book fare and I got lost amidst all the different creatures and landscapes. Still, the book gradually grew on me and it was fun reading about Frodo and gang's adventures. It was heartening to 'witness' Frodo's courage and Sam's loyalty to him. And who could forget Gandalf's sacrifice? I didn't watch the movie but I can imagine the collective gasp when Gandalf fell into the abyss. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

Rob Inglis Audiobooks's 2011:
My favorite part remains the same from The Hobbit -- anytime Rob Inglis sings. Which meant Tom Bombadill's chapter was the one least remembered from my teens, and Rob sang like every thirty seconds which had me gleeing like a child.
I didn't remember the forest before Riverdale, which takes up like one third of the book. I still love Glorfindal's arrival on scene, and remember how mad I was at the movie for changing that to Arwen. Also, on the accounts of Arwen & Aragorn....I totally never remembered how oblivious Frodo was to what the narrator & reader aren't.
Most of the rest of the book was pretty normal and as expected from first read and movie watching.
My most down part on this one -- The Gandalf talk in the Shire that took something like forty tracks to to get through. Maybe it's because I already knew everything he had to say, but the irritation grew by each track after like twenty.
