Miracle update on Perth boy Joshua Schuetz critically injured in quad bike accident in Bali

An Aussie boy has woken up from an induced coma days after a horror accident while holidaying in Bali with his family.

Joshua ‘Joshy’ Schuetz, 8, from Perth, was a passenger on a quad bike being driven by his brother when the vehicle flipped and pinned him to the ground in Ubud last Wednesday.

The talented Futsal player suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain several days before he was due to compete in a tournament on the Indonesian island.

Joshua underwent emergency neurosurgery before he was airlifted home in an induced coma last Friday.

He was transferred to Perth Children's Hospital and within three days, was breathing on his own - which was a 'huge milestone'.

Family friend Bernice 'BJ' Ariasa shared another heartwarming update on Joshua's 'pretty incredible progress' on Wednesday after he was woken from and induced coma by doctors and taken off a ventilator.

Incredibly, Joshua is even communicating through hand signals with 'the coolest being a thumbs-up'.

However, Ms Ariasa added that Joshua is still struggling to talk due to all of the trauma of the various ventilators and tubes down his throat.

'But he has asked what happened and they have told him, and he’s been asked who’s in his team photo and he can name them,' an update on a GoFundMe started for the family read.

Ms Ariasa added that the 8-year-old remembers family members visiting him in hospital.

'When asked who he remembers visiting him in hospital he remembers Linc coming in to talk to him in Bali,' she wrote.

'Which is so special and just proves how important it is to talk to coma patients regardless of what stage they are in their journey.'

Despite this, the talented athlete still has a 'very long road to recovery', Ms Ariasa said in her update, but added Joshua is a 'fighter'.

'He knows his mates are waiting for him on the pitch when he's ready in his own time,' she wrote.

Joshua was holidaying in Bali with his family ahead of a Futsal tournament he was due to compete in last weekend with some of his Cockburn Wolves teammates.

The club has since rallied behind its 'beloved little champion' by launching a #staystrongjoshy campaign online.

Teams paid tribute to Joshua during last weekend's matches.

'The Wolves is an inclusive club and we call for all our members from any faith backgrounds to pray for healing and hold space in your heart for Joshy Schuetz and his family,' the club posted.

The GoFundMe to cover the family's staggering medical bills has now raised over $126,000.
