Businessman Mo Ramzan was running errands on an ordinary summer's day in 2019 when his life imploded. In a co-ordinated police operation, he was pulled over by detectives as eight officers simultaneously raided his home. To his abject horror, Mo, known as 'Rammy' by everyone in his home town of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, was arrested on suspicion of being the head of an international grooming gang.

Achamma Cherian, 57, (pictured) was attacked while on duty at the acute medical unit inside Oldham Royal Hospital, Greater Manchester, on Saturday evening. Roman Haque, 37, is accused of stabbing the nurse at the hospital at about 11.30pm that night. He appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court charged with the attempted murder following the incident which left the nurse seriously injured. Ms Cherian's home, which she shares with her husband, is just minutes away from her workplace at the hospital.

Jacob Meagher is seeking 'substantial damages' from the world famous institution, alleging he was the subject of disability discrimination and victimisation following the failure of his Law Phd. He claimed that he was placed at a 'substantial disadvantage' while writing his 100,000 word thesis, following a fallout with the university which saw him restart his Phd in 2019. Mr Meagher had asserted in court documents that he was 'subjected to a number of detriments, such as the provision of a single supervisor who did not hold a position with the Faculty, and no advisor'. This meant he was 'less able than other candidates of the same ability to produce a singular lengthy and multifaceted piece of work such as a PhD thesis', the High Court was told.

Troubled comedian and actor Tony Slattery had just started to emerge from his 'lifelong battle with dark demons' before his death aged 65, his close friend Stephen Fry has revealed today. Slattery, who was best known for starring on Channel 4 's Whose Line Is It Anyway?, has died following a heart attack after years fighting addiction to cocaine and alcohol as well as a battle with bipolar disorder and depression . An alum of the world famous Cambridge Footlight set alongside Fry, Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson, Slattery cemented himself as one of the most gifted TV comedians of the late 80s and early 90s. The comic, who was born in November 1959, became a household name on Whose Line Is It Anyway? before suddenly vanishing from TV amid battles with addiction and breakdowns. In 2019, Slattery gave his first TV interview in 14 years where he detailed his harrowing battle with addiction and bipolar disorder. At his lowest moments he was spending £4,000 a week on his drug habit, taking 10 grams of cocaine and downing two bottles of vodka each day. He credited his lifelong partner, Mark Michael Hutchinson, with keeping him alive.

A family-run Italian restaurant has claimed a couple left without paying their £83 bill after telling staff they were going outside for a cigarette. Belluno, an Italian restaurant in Newton St Cyres, Devon, called out the alleged culprits on Facebook with a post that contained CCTV images of the pair at the establishment. The photos appear to show them arriving at the eatery, with the man wearing a cream Fred Perry jumper and the woman wearing a black hat and white fur coat. Bosses at the establishment claim the couple failed to return to their table after heading out for a smoke during their meal on January 9. They accused the couple of 'pretending' to smoke, using the excuse to flee the scene and leave their £83.45 bill unpaid.

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands was typically stylish in a purple ensemble today as she took part in a community embroidery project in The Hague. The royal, 53, participated in the At Home in The Hague art project run by the organisation Haags Verhaal. Focused on finding the common thread that makes different people feel at home in the Dutch city, participants illustrate their sense of being at home by sewing a symbol or a phrase on a piece of fabric using a red thread. Reena Simon, from Wales, started her mission to turn the old-fashion home into a Scandinavian haven for her, her husband and their three daughters in 2018.
