Top Red Sox News

  • Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela: Plays hero with another homer

Rafaela went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 11-9 win over the Angels.

With the score tied 9-9 in the ninth inning, Rafaela sliced a Brock Burke changeup down the right-field line and tucked it just inside Pesky's Pole for the game-winner homer. Rafaela has gone yard in three straight games, accounting for half his home runs on the season, while Wednesday's clutch blast extended the 24-year-old's hitting streak to eight games -- a stretch in which he's batting .412 (14-for-34).

  • Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Chased early in no-decision

Giolito didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 11-9 win over the Angels, coughing up seven runs on eight hits and a walk over 1.2 innings. He struck out one.

Six of the eight hits off Giolito went for extra bases, as the Halos put plenty of balls off -- or in Taylor Ward's case, over -- the Green Monster. It was the shortest outing of the season for the right-hander, with the seven runs allowed being a season high, and Giolito saw his ERA balloon from 4.78 to 6.42 as a result. He'll try to shake it off ahead of his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Rays.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Taking seat in series finale

Story is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Angels.

Story went 1-for-8 with four strikeouts in the first two games of the series and will get some rest for Wednesday's finale. David Hamilton will start at shortstop and bat eighth as the Red Sox try to avoid the sweep.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Steals two bags in loss

Hamilton entered as a pinch runner and stole two bases in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Angels.

Hamilton ran for Kristian Campbell and stole his 11th and 12th bases of the season. Five of those 12 thefts have come as a pinch runner, as Hamilton makes the most of a limited role. He's unlikely to gain a greater role going forward even with Campbell struggling at the plate. The Red Sox are dangerously close to falling out of relevancy in 2025, and if that were to happen, Hamilton would remain on the bench watching Campbell and Marcelo Mayer.

  • Red Sox's Kristian Campbell: Raps double in loss

Campbell went 1-for-3 with a walk and a double in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Angels.

Campbell's third-inning double was just his second extra-base hit since April 29. A rookie season that got off to a promising start -- Campbell had an .848 OPS in April -- went south in May, when he went 11-for-82 (.134) with a .355 OPS. Boston manager Alex Cora told Christopher Smith of MassLive.com that he prefers Campbell to work through his struggles in the majors, but the Red Sox haven't ruled out a demotion to Triple-A Worcester if the 22-year-old is unable to get going at the plate. Campbell batted ninth for a second straight game Tuesday.

  • Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela: Belts fifth homer

Rafaela went 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run home run in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Angels.

The center fielder tied the game at 3-3 by taking Yusei Kikuchi deep in the sixth inning, but the Boston offense fell quiet after that. Rafaela has gone yard in back-to-back games, giving him five homers on the year, and he's hit safety in seven straight contests -- a stretch in which he's batting a blistering .448 (13-for-29) with two doubles, three homers, four RBI and five runs.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Delivers quality start Tuesday

Bello came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Angels, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four.

After struggling to complete five innings in a start through most of May, Bello began June with a much sharper outing, tossing 65 of 103 pitches for strikes in his third quality start of the year. The 26-year-old right-hander will carry a 3.91 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 33:24 K:BB through 46 innings into his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Rays.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Rehab assignment delayed

Crawford's (knee) rehab assignment is being delayed due to wrist pain, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Crawford had been set to make a rehab start this week after recovering from right patellar tendinopathy, but now he has a new injury to contend with. The right-hander will be in Boston on Wednesday to undergo tests.

  • Red Sox's Zack Kelly: Summoned from minors

The Red Sox recalled Kelly from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Kelly has been touched up for 12 runs (11 earned) over 12 innings for the Red Sox this season. He'll provide the bullpen with a fresh arm.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Back in big leagues

The Red Sox recalled Criswell from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

The Red Sox need some length in their bullpen after Richard Fitts recorded just three outs Monday against the Angels. Criswell has been rocked for eight runs (five earned) over 4.1 innings during his time with Boston this season but has collected a 1.52 ERA while being used primarily as a starter at Worcester.

  • Red Sox's Nick Burdi: Goes on IL with foot contusion

The Red Sox placed Burdi on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right foot contusion, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

He will be eligible to return June 18 and would seem to have a good shot to be activated on that date. Burdi has spun 5.1 scoreless relief innings for the Red Sox this season.

  • Red Sox's Hunter Dobbins: Re-entering rotation

Dobbins will rejoin Boston's rotation after Richard Fitts was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Dobbins came on in relief of Fitts in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Angels and tossed five innings of one-run ball. The right-hander is slated to start this weekend against the Yankees on the road.

  • Red Sox's Richard Fitts: Optioned to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Fitts to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Fitts recorded just three outs in Monday's loss to the Angels. He had not been fully stretched out after recovering from a pectoral strain, so he'll be given time to rebuild stamina at Worcester. Hunter Dobbins will enter Boston's rotation.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Expects to be ready for Opening Day

Casas (knee) will be off crutches in two weeks and expects to be ready for Opening Day next season, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Casas spoke to reporters Tuesday for the first time since he underwent surgery a month ago to repair the ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee. He will spend most of the summer rehabbing at Boston's spring training complex in Florida.

  • Red Sox's Carlos Narvaez: Getting breather Tuesday

Narvaez is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Angels.

Connor Wong has taken a back seat to Narvaez at catcher for the Red Sox, but this will be Narvaez's second time beginning on the bench over the last three games. He enters play Tuesday with a .809 OPS to Wong's .375 mark.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Out again versus lefty

Mayer is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Angels.

The Red Sox are facing a second straight lefty in Yusei Kikuchi, and the left-handed-hitting Mayer has been absent from the lineup for both contests. Abraham Toro will again play third base and bat fifth.

  • Red Sox's Abraham Toro: Shifts to third base

Toro started at third base and went 1-for-4 in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Angels.

Toro, who had been the regular starter at first base, shifted to third base while Romy Gonzalez, fresh off the injured list, started at first. Toro is batting .306 with an .822 OPS over 19 games since his contract was selected from Triple-A Worcester. The two could share the position going forward after Red Sox manager Alex Cora scrapped a plan to give Kristian Campbell starts there.
