Applesauce Cake Ingredients

These are the simple ingredients you’ll need to make this applesauce cake recipe:

  • Sugar: This applesauce cake recipe starts with a cup of white sugar.
  • Butter: A stick of butter lends moisture and flavor to the cake.
  • Applesauce: Use store-bought or homemade applesauce
  • Flour: All-purpose flour gives the cake batter structure.
  • Baking soda: Baking soda acts as a leavener, which means it makes the cake rise.
  • Spices: The applesauce cake is spiced with ground cinnamon and ground cloves.
  • Mix-ins: Walnuts and raisins are optional, but the mix-ins take the cake up a notch.

How to Make Applesauce Cake

Make the cake batter, pour the batter into a prepared pan, and bake until a toothpick comes out clean. That’s it! You’ll find the full, step-by-step applesauce cake recipe below.

How to Store Applesauce Cake

Store the applesauce cake (covered tightly) at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to five days.

Can You Freeze Applesauce Cake?

Yes! Applesauce cake freezes well. Wrap the cooled applesauce cake tightly in a layer of storage wrap, then in a layer of aluminum foil. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight. If you want to top the cake with powdered sugar, wait until just before you serve it.

Allrecipes Community Tips and Praise

“This cake is soooo moist and delicious,” raves Vodkagimlet. “I subbed the walnuts for plump, dried cranberries and it hit the mark. This will be a star recipe in my recipe binder and only the best make it to that book.”

“We loved this!” says Lindsay. “I used unsweetened apple sauce and it delivered a cake that wasn’t overly sweet. So easy to make and tastes similar to a quick bread. I used a 9-inch cake pan so mine cooked quicker and was actually done in 30 minutes. Decided to top with vanilla ice cream, and wow was that good!”

“I followed the recipe except I sprinkled some oats, cinnamon and brown sugar on top before baking,” according to Californiabaker. "This cake came out perfect!”
