Customize your own mix of nuts, seeds, and dried fruits, and even add seasoning (or chocolate) to up the taste factor. “Trail mix is so easy to make at home,” says Allrecipes Allstar Kim Shupe. “You can just throw it in a container and toss it into a car before you go.”

Onigiri 

Onigiri, or Japanese rice balls, is fast to make and doesn’t require any complicated ingredients. Plus, it’s filling and non-messy, so it’s extra convenient for a car ride. “You can use whatever you may have on hand to make savory, sweet, sour, or salty bundles of joy that any member of your family can customize to their own taste,” says Allrecipes Allstar Blake Baird. Try adding beef, salmon, or tuna for a protein boost!

Meat and Cheese Roll-ups 

You could make a PB&J or ham sandwich for your next road trip—or you could take a bit of extra time to whip up a delicious snack-sandwich hybrid you’ll look forward to way more. Allrecipes Allstar Bri Evans likes turkey, spinach, and cream cheese roll-ups (basically, a wrap cut down to bite size). Here’s another take: a roast beef, cheddar cheese, and horseradish roll-up.

Grilled Veggie Sandwiches

Another genius, nutritious take on standard road trip fare: A roasted veggie sandwich, which won’t require refrigeration like meat would if you’re on a long road trip. Allrecipes Allstar Ashley Schuering takes whatever leftover veggies she has—think onions, peppers, zucchini, or squash—then marintes them with a simple garlicky balsamic vinaigrette for 30 minutes. Then, she grills them, layers them on a crusty roll, and smears it with some hummus.
