Whitchurch is a market town in Shropshire, England, 2 miles (3km) east of the Welsh border. Located on the North Shropshire Plain in the Welsh Marches and close to the Cheshire border, it is the oldest continuously inhabited town in Shropshire. The town is 20 miles (30km) north of the county town of Shrewsbury, 20 miles (30km) south of Chester, and 15 miles (24km) east of Wrexham.
According to the 2001 Census, the population of the town is 8,673, increasing to 9,781 at the 2011 census. The town is located in the Whitchurch Urbancivil parish, and is twinned with the French town of Neufchâtel-en-Bray.
History
Originally a settlement founded by the Romans around AD 52 or 70, it was called Mediolanum (lit. "Midfield" or "Middle of the Plain"). The settlement was located on a major Roman road between Chester and Wroxeter and Roman artefacts can be seen at the Whitchurch Heritage Centre. It was listed on the Antonine Itinerary but is not the Mediolanum of Ptolemy's Geography, which was in central Wales.
It was opened by the Cardiff Railway in 1911.
Until the 1960s Whitchurch station had 2 platforms (up and down lines) plus a goods platform, a goods shed and yard, booking office, footbridge, and a staff of at least 2 including George the porter. There was also a signal box at the eastern end of the platform
Monday to Saturday daytimes, there is a half-hourly service to southbound Cardiff Central and onwards to Radyr on the City Line and to Coryton northbound. Evenings there is an hourly service in each direction but there is no Sunday service.
The Shropshire breed of domestic sheep originated from the hills of Shropshire, and North Staffordshire, England, during the 1840s. The breeders in the area used the local horned black-faced sheep and crossed them with a few breeds of white-faced sheep (Southdown, Cotswold, and Leicester). This produced a medium-sized polled (hornless) sheep that produced good wool and meat. In 1855 the first Shropshires were imported into the United States (Virginia). This breed is raised primarily for meat.
1800s
In 1859 the breed was officially recognized by the Royal Agricultural Society as being a distinct breed. The popularity of the Shropshire breed grew rapidly in England, and in 1882 Shropshire breeders founded the Shropshire Sheep Breeders' Association and Flock Book Society, the world's first such society for sheep. The same year the Society published the first Flock Book, a record of sheep bred and their breeders. The Society still survives, and still publishes a Flock Book annually.
Great Britain and Ireland was a set of special commemorativepostage stamps issued by the Royal Mail in 2006. The stamps were the final part of the British Journey series, which had previously featured Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. It was available as mint stamps, as a presentation pack, stamps cards, and a first day cover.
British Journey series
These stamps are the final issue in the British Journey series; which started in 2003 with Scotland, followed in 2004 with Northern Ireland and Wales, and South West England in 2005. The series was brought to a premature end with this issue due to a lack of popularity amongst collectors.
Stamp details
The stamps were issued as a block of stamps, five wide by two deep. The photographs selected for this issue show no sky but are intended to demonstrate the colours and textures of the United Kingdom. All values are first class.

The exact origins of the Shropshire sheep breed are unclear but we have a good suspicion they are from Shropshire! The breed was developed in the early 19th century. The developers of the Shropshire breed were inspired by the success of the Leicester Longwool sheep and so made their own breed using the same method of 'selective breeding'.
