The House of Plantagenet (/plænˈtædʒənət/plan-TAJ-ə-nət) was a royal house which originated from the lands of Anjou in France. The name Plantagenet is used by modern historians to identify four distinct royal houses – the Angevins who were also Counts of Anjou, the main body of the Plantagenets following the loss of Anjou, and the houses of Lancaster and York, the Plantagenets' two cadet branches. The family held the English throne from 1154, with the accession of Henry II, until 1485, when Richard III died.
Under the Plantagenets, England was transformed, although this was only partly intentional. The Plantagenet kings were often forced to negotiate compromises such as Magna Carta. These constrained royal power in return for financial and military support. The king was no longer just the most powerful man in the nation, holding the prerogative of judgement, feudal tribute and warfare. He now had defined duties to the realm, underpinned by a sophisticated justice system. A distinct national identity was shaped by conflict with the French, Scots, Welsh and Irish, and the establishment of English as the primary language.

This episode covers the rise of the House of Anjou/Plantagenet and the birth of what some historians call the Angevin Empire. The episode covers the reigns of two kings, Henry II and Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionheart. It mostly focuses on their relations with France but also goes into detail about the conquest of Ireland and Richard's role in the Third Crusade.
Book recommendations:
Medieval Britain: A Very Shory Introduction - This is one of the best books for an overview of the politics of the period. It is very light on certain periods and misses out some continental context, though. Very cheap, though.

The Plantagenet Empire, 1154-1224 - The best intro/summary that isn't in French. Very good with describing the relationship between Henry II and his sons (specifically Richard and John).
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

The dynasty on which Game of Thrones is based is masterfully brought to life by Dan Jones in this four part series. Following one of the most shocking periods in British history, a new historical docu-drama brings to life the dynasty that dragged Britain out of the dark ages and into the modern world.
The historian begins with Henry II - the first king of the dynasty - a dashing and energetic warrior who transformed England from a violent and lawless state into the heart of an empire that would become one of the greatest that Europe has ever seen. However, his success was undone by a series of bitter betrayals.

Bizarre facts about England’s King John. 1. King John was accused of stealing the crown Jewel and hiding it. Jewels were said to be later found in a filthy condition with a terrible smell. King John ordered his servants to murder his nephew, Arthur of Brittany. When Arthur became suspicious of his uncle John, he left for Angers. Later, with the support of Philip II, he returned to oppose his uncle and that didn’t make John happy. As Arthur became a threat to King John’s reign, he asked his soldiers to kidnap and kill him. Once, King John killed over 20 prisoners by completely starving them in the dungeon of the castle.
