Presented by acclaimed historian Dan Jones, the Plantagenets combines his scintillating story-telling with drama reconstruction and brings to life a dramatic and bloody time in England’s history.

Henry II - English Monarchs Animated Documentary
Henry II was King of England from 1154 until his death in 1189, about 34 and a half years.
Henry was the first of 14 Plantagenet English kings to sit on the English throne - a dynasty that would last 331 years until Henry VII, of the House of Tudor, took over.
Two of his sons would also sit on the English throne after his death - the Crusading King Richard the Lionheart and Bad King John, famed for signing Magna Carta and for his portrayal as the villain in the Robin Hood legends.
Henry II’s reign was marked by his vigorous military expeditions in which he expanded his Kingdom into northern France and Ireland and for the conflict with his own family, which spilled over into an all-out rebellion by his sons and his own wife.
Like the House of Tudor’s most famous King, Henry VIII, howeve...

The Angevins-English Monarchs-Henry II-Richard the Lionheart-John-Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine
The real faces of the Angevin Kings of England. The Angevins were a royal house of French origin that ruled England, and half of France, in the 12th and early 13th centuries. Its monarchs were Henry II, Richard I the Lionheart and John.
Also for the very first time we look at the face of Eleanor of Aquitaine the Queen of England, the wife of Henry II and the mother of Richard and John. Eleanor was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in western Europe, who ruled the even larger territory to the south of France called Aquitaine.
Showing attention to detail, the faces of Richard and John were given a more realistic touch ignoring all popular beliefs and misconceptions regarding their psychical appearance.
Some scenes taken from the movies: Kingdom of Heaven (2005), and Robin Hood ...

This episode covers the rise of the House of Anjou/Plantagenet and the birth of what some historians call the Angevin Empire. The episode covers the reigns of two kings, Henry II and Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionheart. It mostly focuses on their relations with France but also goes into detail about the conquest of Ireland and Richard's role in the Third Crusade.
Book recommendations:
Medieval Britain: A Very Shory Introduction - This is one of the best books for an overview of the politics of the period. It is very light on certain periods and misses out some continental context, though. Very cheap, though.

Following one of the most shocking periods in British history, a new historical docu-drama brings to life the dynasty that dragged Britain out of the dark ages and into the modern world. Presented by acclaimed historian Dan Jones, the Plantagenets combines his scintillating story-telling with drama reconstruction and brings to life a dramatic and bloody time in England’s history.
This is history like you’ve never seen it before. Dan delivers his extraordinary take on one of the most visceral and violent chapters in British History. The series begins with Henry II, a control freak betrayed by his own wife and children after the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket. Episode two reveals the collapse of friendship between Henry III and Simon de Montfort, spiraling into bloody civil war. Edward II’s obsession with revenge tears England apart in episode 3. Finally, episode four tells the story of the boy king tyrant, Richard II, one of the most vicious and inventive despots in history.

Specifically with the most senior member of Church in England at the time, the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Beckett who, as a result of his feud with the King, would end up hacked to death.

Some scenes taken from the movies: Kingdom of Heaven (2005), and Robin Hood (2010).

The British dynasty on which Game of Thrones is based is skilfully brought to life. Following one of the most shocking periods in British history, a new historical docu-drama brings to life the dynasty that dragged Britain out of the dark ages and into the modern world. Ruling the country for over three hundred years, ruthlessly crushing all competition, The Plantagenet story is more shocking, more brutal and more astonishing than anything you’ll find in Game of Thrones.
Episode two reveals the collapse of friendship between Henry III and Simon de Montfort, spiralling into bloody civil war. Edward II’s obsession with revenge tears England apart in episode 3. Finally, episode four tells the story of the boy king tyrant, Richard II, one of the most vicious and inventive despots in history.

Amazon affiliate link (UK): http://amzn.to/2pfvF35
The Plantagenet Empire, 1154-1224 - The best intro/summary that isn't in French. Very good with describing the relationship between Henry II and his sons (specifically Richard and John).
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.
