1946 Matty Malneck & Robert Maxwell - Shangri-La (Side 2-the familiar melody)
Co-written with Malneck, harpist Maxwell’s familiar tune “Shangri-La” (Four Coins 1957, Robert Maxwell 1964, Vic Dana 1964, Lettermen 1969) had originated during WW2 as a more complex instrumental piece titled “Fantasy For Harp.“ It was first recorded by him in 1943 or 1944 while a member of the U.S. 11th Naval District Coast Guard Band, which was conducted at the time by Lt. Rudy Vallee (listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_wFuiqkRwE ). Retitled “Shangri-La,” this more widely-available Columbia pressing was recorded a couple of years later.
Note, however, that the melodic line that we know today as “Shangri-La” does not appear until halfway through this 6-minute piece, specifically at the start of Side 2. As I expect that a greater number of people will be more interested in ...

08. When Your Lover Has Gone
What good is the scheming, the planning and dreaming
That comes with each new love affair
The dreams that we cherish, so often might perish
And leaves you with castles in air
When you're alone, who cares for starlit skies
When you're alone, the magic moonlight dies
At break of dawn, there is no sunrise
When your lover has gone
What lonely hours, the evening shadows bring
What lonely hours, with memories lingering
Like faded flowers, life can't mean anything
When your lover has gone

Billie Holiday & Her Orchestra - When Your Lover Has Gone (Clef Records 1955)
"When Your Lover Has Gone" is a 1931 composition by Einar Aaron Swan which, after being featured in the James Cagney film Blonde Crazy that same year, has become a jazz standard. This song is unusual in that, after a simple verse, it does not follow the usual 64-bar refrain that characterizes the structure of most pop music, but tells its entire story in 32 bars. It has been said that James Dean's favorite song was Billie Holiday's "When Your Lover Has Gone."
Billie's accompanied by Harry Edison (trumpet), Benny Carter (alto, tenor saxophone), Jimmy Rowles (piano, celeste), Barney Kessel (guitar), John Simmons (bass), and Larry Bunker (drums). Recorded in Los Angeles, August 23, 1955. (Clef Records)

This theme belongs to the most beautiful jazz tunes and here is presented in one of the most memorable performances ever recorded: by Eddie Condon's Orchestra with solos by Bobby Hackett on trumpet. What good is the scheming, the planning and dreaming
That comes with each new love affair
The dreams that we cherish, so often might perish
And leaves you with castles in air
When you're alone, who cares for starlit skies
When you're alone, the magic moonlight dies
At break of dawn, there is no sunrise
When your lover has gone
What lonely hours, the evening shadows bring
What lonely hours, with memories lingering
Like faded flowers, life can't mean anything

When Your Lover Has Gone (E.A.Swan) - Eddie Condon & His Orchestra, Featuring: a Trumpet solo by Bobby Hackett, Jack Teagarden (trombone) and Eddie Condon (guitar), Decca 1944 (USA)
NOTE: "When Your Lover Has Gone" was composed by Einar Aaron SWAN -- an American who was born in a Finnish immigrant family and whose name is proudly quoted in all Finnish music almanacs. This theme belongs to the most beautiful jazz tunes and here is presented in one of the most memorable performances ever recorded: by Eddie Condon's Orchestra with solos by Bobby Hackett on trumpet. Eddie Condon on Guitar and Jack Teagarden on trombone. This rendition is truly a rendezvous of three jazz giants!
See also my new uploading at DM with another Eddie Condon's rendition and a little note about that outstanding American jazz guitarist and bandleader http://www.dailymotion.pl/video/xh2xgh_eddie-condon-i-m-sorry-i-made-you-cry-1928_music
Also, I recommend to you Maxine Sullivan's version in YT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKMxIVFRMdU as well as the Charleston Chasers' recording from 1931 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkjWa6xRwzw
