1946 Matty Malneck & Robert Maxwell - Shangri-La (Side 2-the familiar melody)
Co-written with Malneck, harpist Maxwell’s familiar tune “Shangri-La” (Four Coins 1957, Robert Maxwell 1964, Vic Dana 1964, Lettermen 1969) had originated during WW2 as a more complex instrumental piece titled “Fantasy For Harp.“ It was first recorded by him in 1943 or 1944 while a member of the U.S. 11th Naval District Coast Guard Band, which was conducted at the time by Lt. Rudy Vallee (listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_wFuiqkRwE ). Retitled “Shangri-La,” this more widely-available Columbia pressing was recorded a couple of years later.
Note, however, that the melodic line that we know today as “Shangri-La” does not appear until halfway through this 6-minute piece, specifically at the start of Side 2. As I expect that a greater number of people will be more interested in ...

ROY ELDRIDGE with GENE KRUPA - "ROCKIN' CHAIR" - Restored Air Check from October 1941
Now, there are two complete ‘live’ renditions of Roy Eldridge’s famous trumpet flight on “ROCKIN’ CHAIR” on the, err, “market”.
The initial performance has been recorded off the air on June 7, 1941 and got subsequently released by the “Meritt Record Society”, then rereleased on the Swedish “PHONTASTIC” label.
This track however has been privately grabbed off the air by a jazz fan on October 3, 1941, a ‘live’ broadcast from the Hollywood Palladium, and there are two major skips and some other minor distortions on the original track, released on “Fanfare” (see pictured album).
– Channel owner’s sarcasm: Oh yeah, one of those “you’ll-never-know-how-it’s-gonna-sound” Fanfare LP’s, #10-110, entitled “Gene Krupa – Featuring Roy Eldridge & Anita O’Day – Air Checks 1938 through 1942″.

Since Roy played similar phrases at those particular spots, I simply had to insert the missing beats/ bars by copying & pasting them from the earlier performance.
Enjoy!

La musica e’ una delle vie per le quali l’anima ritorna al cielo
Music is one of the ways for which the soul returns to heaven
