The name Judith (Hebrew: יְהוּדִית, ModernYehudit, TiberianYəhûḏîṯ; "Praised" or "Jewess") is the feminine form of Judah.
Historical context
Original language
It is not clear whether the Book of Judith was originally written in Hebrew or in Greek. The oldest extant version is the Septuagint and might either be a translation from Hebrew or composed in Greek. Details of vocabulary and phrasing point to a Greek text written in a language modeled on the Greek developed through translating the other books in the Septuagint. The extant Hebrew language versions, whether identical to the Greek, or in the shorter Hebrew version, are medieval. The Hebrew versions name important figures directly such as the Seleucid king Antiochus Epiphanes, thus placing the events in the Hellenistic period when the Maccabees battled the Seleucid monarchs. The Greek version uses deliberately cryptic and anachronistic references such as "Nebuchadnezzar", a "King of Assyria," who "reigns in Nineveh," for the same king. The adoption of that name, though unhistorical, has been sometimes explained either as a copyist's addition, or an arbitrary name assigned to the ruler of Babylon.
Judith is a play written in 1840 by German dramatist Friedrich Hebbel.
The play, composed at Hamburg, was Hebbel's first tragedy. The following year it was performed in Hamburg and Berlin, making the German poet known throughout Germany.
Based on the deuterocanonicalBook of Judith, Hebbel's adaptation presents a heroine who oversteps the boundaries of proper womanhood as defined by his 19th-c upbringing. Changing the political plot of the biblical story into a psychological investigation, he invests Judith with a sexuality and beauty that proves fatal to the men around her: she is left a virgin on her wedding night since her beauty (or so she believes) renders her husband Manasses impotent, and when in Holofernes's tent, she subconsciously exercises her repressed sexual desire, leading Holofernes to rape her and her to subsequently behead him. "Holofernes prefigures the misogynist ideology of the fin-de-siecle", and while Judith resists the traditional female role she is given, she cannot transcend these restrictions.

Durham's nephew, Tony Sheehan, said he spoke on behalf of the family.
He said Durham's mother had a wish that her daughters would not be tone deaf.
"She got her wish," he said, to laughter from the audience.
He said Durham was always destined to be a musician, having told her sister during childhood "that one day, she'd sing on all the stages of the world".
He also told a story of Durham's early foray into live music.
"In her teens, Judith was kind of naive," he said.
He also told a story of how Judith entered into the music scene
Week after week the band leader where Judith had requested to first sing from told her to come back next week'."
He said when they eventually let her join in, they were blown away
The band leader asked for her name, and she said Judith Cock — the name she was born with.
Mr Sheehan said Durham was told: "Look, if you're gonna be singing in public, you might want to think about changing your name."
"Oh really? I like Judith," he said she replied.
She later changed her name to Judith Durham, using her mother's maiden name.
On a more serious note, Mr Sheehan remembered his aunt as a deeply generous and optimistic person.
The service featured a number of musical tributes, mainly hits from The Seekers.
Durham's older sister, singer Beverley Sheehan, recalled their shared love of music ever since childhood.
"We'd [sing together] early in the morning and my father would have to come in and say: 'that's enough, your mother can't sleep'," she said.
Durham's surviving Seekers band mates Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley and Athol Guy spoke of their admiration for their lead singer.
"It's a real surreal experience for me, standing on this Hamer Hall stage without Judith," said Potger.
"We shared triumphs and adventures on this very platform.
