Unaware of its contents, Beets, a kind-hearted merchant captain, delivers to Balthazar, the far from honest owner of a dance-hall in Amsterdam, a packet containing smuggled diamonds that he has been asked to bring from Riga. To avoid paying Beets the reward he has been promised and to double his profit, Balthazar, who is rightly called "The Tiger", shoots the captain in cold blood and, when the body is discovered in the cellar, makes it appear as if Beets has committed suicide.
The young author Willy Vermeer, who is visiting the dance-hall, cries out that this suicide will form an excellent ending for the story he is writing, but is shocked when he recognizes the dead man as the father of his sweetheart Eva. However, a young waif who has sought shelter in the cellar has witnessed the murder and makes this known. The captain's daughters will know no rest until the criminal is punished for his deed. Eventually Balthazar is tricked into confessing that it was he who shot a bullet through the captain's chest.

Before director Theo Frenkel returned to the Netherlands in 1914, he had worked in France for Pathé Frères, in Great Britain for the producers Hepworth and Urban, and in the German capital for the film pioneer Oskar Messter and Eiko-Film.
Back in the Netherlands, he made the film Fatum for the Rembrandt Film Co., after this he established his own film company Amsterdam Film Cie. The North Sea Wreck was the first film he directed for his own company.
Today, Het wrak in de Noordzee is considered one of the masterpieces of the silent-film period. Theo Frenkel, who had also made a name for himself as an actor and was a descendent of the famous Bouwmeester theatre family, knew very well how to portray the story and the emotions. The level of his camerawork and mise-en-scène attested to his considerable international experience.
French intertitles.

Count De Grancé and his wife have two degenerate children. For their adolescent daughter there is still some hope, as her main vice appears to be that she devours the novels of Emile Zola. The son leads a dissolute life in gambling dens, where he cheats at cards, and in night-clubs where he associates with disreputable characters and is having an affaire with a dancer.
One evening the Count sees his drunken son thrown out of one of his usual haunts. At home in the castle, the son gives his father a revolver and begs the Count to shoot him because he knows that he is a rotter and is unable and unwilling to change his way of life. It is only when the son blames his degeneracy on his lineage that the Count, deeply insulted, pulls the trigger and shoots his son dead. During the trial that follows, the Count delivers a passionate speech in which he recalls how happy he and his wife were with the birth of a son but how alarmed they became when they were confronted with evidence of the boy's cruelty - as a boy he enjoyed killing and mutilating birds - and increasingly degenerate behaviour. He has killed his son, he says, to save the honour of his family. Nevertheless, for this murder he is sentenced to imprisonment. Five years later he is pardoned by the Kaiser.
However, when he goes back home, his wife will have nothing to do with the man who murdered their son, even though a nun, Sister Thérèse, does her utmost to bring about a reconciliation. A man who kills his own son in order to keep the family "pure" is, in the eyes of the Countess, either a villain or a madman. Shortly thereafter, the physically and mentally broken Count De Gracé dies.

He resolves to put an end to his life and goes to a Continental mountain resort where he intends to commit suicide by staging what will appear to be a fatal accident. In the hotel he meets and falls in love with Alexandra, who is able to dissuade him from his rsolution. Edgar will live, because he loves her. However, Alexandra's health declines and, on a beautiful day in spring, she passes away, but not before having extracted the promise from Edgar that he will marry Sonja, who has now grown into an attractive young woman. Edgar will never be able to forget Alexandra. A portrait of her, painted by his friend Raoul, will keep her living in his memories.
