US 69 begins at its southern terminus with SH 87 in Port Arthur. This intersection is also the southern terminus for US 96 and US 287, which are concurrent with US 69. US 69, US 96, and US 287 continue in a northwest, then west, route until its intersection with Interstate 10 in southern Beaumont. At this intersection, US 69, US 96, and US 287 merge with I-10. I-10/US 69/US 96/US 287 continue in a northerly direction through Beaumont for several miles. Just after the intersection with US 90, I-10 splits from the multiplex and resumes its easterly course, leaving US 69, US 96, and US 287 heading northwest through Beaumont. US 69 north of I-10 is also known officially known as Eastex Freeway, and is an official evacuation route, just as Interstate 69/US 59 heading north from Houston is known as Eastex Freeway as well.
From its original junction at U.S. Route 101 in Ventura, California, the route continues along State Route 33 up to Ojai, temporarily joining State Route 150. Leaving Ojai, it continued into the Los Padres National Forest along the Maricopa Highway, with its summit at Pine Mountain. Descending into the Cuyama River Valley, it met State Route 166 and travelled east towards Maricopa past what is now the Carrizo Plain National Monument and crossing the axis of the San Andreas Fault into the southern San Joaquin Valley. In Maricopa, it continued north again with State Route 33 into the southern Midway-Sunset Oil Field and intersecting modern State Route 119 in Taft. From Taft, U.S. 399 followed State Route 119 out of town through Valley Acres and past the modern Buena Vista Recreation Area (the old Buena Vista Lake) towards U.S. Route 99 (now State Route 99) in Pumpkin Center and Greenfield, then with the old alignment of U.S. Route 99 (Union Avenue, SR 99 Bus.) north into Bakersfield where it terminated. This ending, being a useless concurrency, was later truncated to U.S. Route 99 until U.S. Route 399 was decommissioned.
U.S. 431 is paired with unsigned State Route 1 throughout almost all of Alabama, with the exception Dothan, where it is paired with unsigned State Route 210. Within Dothan, AL 1 is also paired with US 231 between the Florida State Line and the Dothan Loop, and US Business Routes 231 and 431 in Dothan, Alabama.
The route takes a rather meandering path through southeast Alabama. It heads in a northeast direction to pass through Phenix City near the Georgia state line, then cuts back to the west to pass through Opelika; the portion between Phenix City and Opelika is concurrent with U.S. Route 280. From Opelika, US 431 swings back and forth between northwest and northeast as it works its way through the southern extent of the Appalachian Mountains, then turning northwest to pass through the Talladega National Forest, arriving at a junction with Interstate 20 a few miles east of Oxford. The combined routes travel westward from Exit 191 into Oxford, where US 431 splits off at Exit 188 and heads northward through Oxford and the adjacent city of Anniston; through this section the route is named Veterans Memorial Parkway.
Maryland Route 277 (MD 277) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs 2.51 miles (4.04km) from Elk Mills east to MD 279 near Elkton in northeastern Cecil County. MD 277 was paved west of MD 316 by 1921 and was extended east to MD 279 in the mid 1980s.
Route description
MD 277 begins at an arbitrary point on Elk Mills Road in the community of Elk Mills about 250 feet (76m) west of the entrance to Elk Mills Community Park. Elk Mills Road continues west as a county highway toward MD 213. MD 277 heads east through a residential area, crossing CSX's Philadelphia Subdivision at grade and then over Big Elk Creek. The state highway enters a forested area along the edge of a quarry before meeting Appleton Road, which heads south as MD 316. MD 277 continues east as Fletchwood Road past a distribution center and through a residential area before reaching its eastern terminus at MD 279 (Elkton Road) northeast of Elkton and just west of the Delaware state line.
SR 277 begins at an intersection with US 11 (Main Street) in the town of Stephens City. SR 631 (Fairfax Street) continues west from the intersection through the Newtown-Stephensburg Historic District and out of town toward the village of Marlboro. SR 277 heads east, leaving the town limits just west of a diamond interchange with Interstate 81. The state highway passes between residential subdivisions and passes to the north of Sherando High School before entering farmland. SR 277 follows the height of land between Wrights Run, which feeds Opequon Creek, to the north and Crooked Run, which is impounded to form Lake Frederick and flows south into the Shenandoah River at Front Royal. SR 277 reaches its eastern terminus immediately to the east of the Frederick–Clarke county line at an intersection with US 522 and US 340. US 522 heads north as Front Royal Pike toward Winchester, US 340 heads east and then north as Lord Fairfax Highway toward Berryville, and US 522 and US 340 join in a concurrency as Winchester Road south toward Front Royal.
South Carolina Highway 277 (SC 277) is a state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina that runs 8.1 miles (13.0km) from I-77 (Exit 18) between Killian and Dentsville in Richland County to US 76 (Elmwood Avenue) in downtown Columbia. For most of its length, it is a controlled accessfreeway (motorway) conforming to interstate standards. The highway serves as a spur into Columbia from its northeastern suburbs and from intercity traffic traveling from I-77 and I-20. The freeway portion of SC 277 is called the Northeastern Freeway or I. DeQuincey Newman Freeway while the 0.7 (1.1km) miles of surface street is part of Bull Street.
History
SC 277 was originally part of a plan to construct an urban-loop expressway through Columbia shortly following federal approval of extending I-77 to the city from Charlotte in 1969. The initial phase of the highway was logically conceived as an alternative to increasingly congested Farrow Road (SC 555). The highway split from Interstate 77 at what is now Exit 19, proceeding through downtown Columbia roughly parallel to Farrow Rd. and Huger Street, finally merging with Interstate 26 near the present-day terminus of I-77 in Cayce. New parallel spans over the Congaree River, as well as a direct connection to I-126 at an improved Huger St. interchange were part of the original plan. Construction began at I-20 in 1973, opening in stages from the planned Bull Street interchange northward to I-77 through the end of 1977.
Most of U.S. 277's route through the two states overlaps other U.S. highways. Those include U.S. 62 from Newcastle to Chickasha, Oklahoma, U.S. 62 and U.S. 281 from five miles (8km) west of Elgin, Oklahoma, to Lawton, U.S. 281 from Lawton to Wichita Falls, Texas, U.S. 82 from Wichita Falls to Seymour, Texas, and U.S. 83 from Anson, Texas to Abilene, Texas. Through the Lawton area and again from Randlett, Oklahoma, to near downtown Wichita Falls, U.S. 277 is also co-signed with I-44.
