The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne in England between Gateshead's Quays arts quarter on the south bank, and the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne on the north bank. Opened for public use in 2001, the award-winning structure was conceived and designed by architect Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineer Gifford. The bridge is sometimes referred to as the 'Blinking Eye Bridge' or the 'Winking Eye Bridge' due to its shape and its tilting method. In terms of height, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is slightly shorter than the neighbouring Tyne Bridge, and stands as the sixteenth tallest structure in the city.
Design
The bridge was lifted into place in one piece by the Asian Hercules II, one of the world's largest floating cranes, on 20 November 2000. It was opened to the public on 17 September 2001, and was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II on 7 May 2002. The bridge, which cost £22m to build, was part funded by the Millennium Commission and European Regional Development Fund. It was built by Volker Stevin.
Time-lapse photography is a technique whereby the frequency at which film frames are captured (the frame rate) is much lower than that used to view the sequence. When played at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing. For example, an image of a scene may be captured once every second, then played back at 30 frames per second; the result is an apparent 30 times speed increase. Time-lapse photography can be considered the opposite of high speed photography or slow motion.
Processes that would normally appear subtle to the human eye, e.g. the motion of the sun and stars in the sky, become very pronounced. Time-lapse is the extreme version of the cinematography technique of undercranking, and can be confused with stop motion animation.
History
Some classic subjects of timelapse photography include:
cloudscapes and celestial motion
plants growing and flowers opening
fruit rotting and expiring
evolution of a construction project
people in the city
The technique has been used to photograph crowds, traffic, and even television. The effect of photographing a subject that changes imperceptibly slowly, creates a smooth impression of motion. A subject that changes quickly is transformed into an onslaught of activity.
Time Lapse is the first live album by guitarist Steve Hackett. The album is drawn from live performances at the Savoy Theater in New York City (during the Cured tour) and at Central TV Studios in Nottingham.
Track listing
All songs written by Steve Hackett, except where indicated.
The construction of the bridge began in 2004, the first part was ready in 2005 and the second part in 2007. The building cost was approximately 94 million euros.
The bridge is 835 metres (2,740ft) long. The main part of this bridge is the 45-m pylon which looks like the letter M. This form originates from Meñyıllıq (Cyrillic: Меңъеллык), the Tatar for thousand years old, or its Latin variant Millennium. The roadway carries three lanes of traffic and a pedestrian walkway in each direction. The bridge connects Gorky park and Fatix Ämirxan Avenue.
Installed in December 1999, to commemorate the new millennium (2000), the span was actually constructed 80 km from Dublin - in Carlow - as a portal frame structure made up of a slender steel truss and resting on reinforced concrete haunches.
The bridge was designed by Howley Harrington Architects with Price & Myers as Consulting Engineers. The concrete base and steel structure for the bridge were provided by two Carlow firms: Formwork 2000+ and Thompson Engineering respectively.
The Millennium Bridge is neighbour to the much older (and well known) pedestrian Ha'penny Bridge to the east, and Grattan Bridge to the west.

Lifting the 1,200 Ton Gateshead Millennium Bridge!
The amazing story of how the 1,200 ton Gateshead Millennium Bridge was fabricated and lifted into place! I worked on this project at the steel fabricator/erector firm, Watson Steel, for the full year leading up to the big lift day. Enjoy!

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge in Newcastle upon Tyne - Daily Mail
Researchers at Warwick University say nature holds the key to their new design. It uses a design process called 'form finding' to produce a structure with no weak points. Such structures will have enhanced safety, and long durability, without the need for repair or restructuring.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge tilting
This is a video of Gateshead Millennium Bridge tilting in real time at noon on Sunday 18 April 2010.
Most videos of this are speeded up using time lapse and I haven't been able to find a high definition video of the tilt in real time. So here's one. It does show the beautiful geometric patterns created as the bridge goes up and down.
There is an added diversion in the background where you can see a charity abseil down the front of the Malmaison Hotel on the Newcastle side of the Tyne.
The music is Over Distant Shores licensed from Lynne Publishing.

Trouble never seems to go away, So crack a fucking bottle until you're feeling okay. Forget money, politics, and war. Get fucked up, pass out on the floor. Why do we do it? Why not? Sometimes life's not what you thought. My mind is fucking racing it's got to stop. What you handed me works so thanks a lot. Goodbye reality I don't want to be With you anymore We need something to cope. What's cheap, because we're broke. Cheap beer, Saints Ides! Gonna take everything in sight. Joe and Billy up 'till the morning. I'm passed out drunk, lightweight I'm snoring. Time to escape all our problems and threats. Missing our families and dodging our debts. Substance abuse, pass it over here. it's not the time or the place for my head to be clear. Goodbye reality I don't want to be With you anymore We need something to cope. What's cheap, because we're broke.
