Don Ellis (July 25, 1934 – December 17, 1978) was an American jazz trumpeter, drummer, composer and bandleader. He is best known for his extensive musical experimentation, particularly in the area of unusual time signatures. Later in his life he worked as a film composer, among other works contributing a score to 1971's The French Connection and 1973's The Seven-Ups.
Ellis was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 25, 1934. His father was a Methodist minister and his mother a church organist. He attended West High School in Minneapolis, MN. After attending a Tommy Dorsey Big Band concert, he first became interested in jazz. Other early inspirations were Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. He graduated from Boston University in 1956 with a music composition degree.
Ellis' first job was with the late Glenn Miller's band, then directed by Ray McKinley. He stayed with the band until September 1956, when he joined the U.S. Army's Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra and the Soldiers' Show Company. Ellis was transferred to Frankfurt, Germany for duty. In the Army band, Ellis met pianist Cedar Walton, and saxophonists Eddie Harris and Don Menza. While in that band Ellis had his first opportunity to compose and arrange for a big band.

Riley B. "B.B." King (September 16, 1925 – May 14, 2015) was an American blues singer, guitarist, songwriter, and record producer. King introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that influenced many later electric blues guitarists.
King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of the Blues", and one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" along with Albert King and Freddie King. King was known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing at more than 200 concerts per year on average into his 70s. In 1956, he reportedly appeared at 342 shows.
King died at the age of 89 in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 14, 2015 from complications of Alzheimer's disease along with congestive heart failure and diabetic complications.
Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation called Berclair, near the town of Itta Bena, Mississippi, the son of sharecroppers Albert and Nora Ella King. He considered the nearby city of Indianola, Mississippi to be his home. When Riley was 4 years old, his mother left his father for another man, so the boy was raised by his maternal grandmother, Elnora Farr, in Kilmichael, Mississippi.

Normally I wouldn't be posting something on this channel that was commercially available. But this recording was inexplicably not already available on YouTube, so here it is. One of Hank's best charts. It was originally (I believe) written for the Don Ellis orchestra--the incarnation that included the string quartet as well as a few other orchestral winds. It's in 13, mostly divided 3, 3, 2, 2, 3. Hank made a standard big band instrumentation of this as well. In the process, he changed some things a little here and there. From those that knew and worked with him, apparently that was a rather common practice of his, thus making "definitive" versions elusive. Don solos on flügel and Milcho Leviev is on keyboards. Enjoy.

http://gravityworld.tv/Video_Content/bbking.html B.B. King Live In Africa '74 is a rare - extremely rare - intimate view of B.B. King in concert. At age 49, having "crossed over" to wide popularity with his show at the Fillmore West in 1968 and secured his fame with the 1970 hit "The Thrill Is Gone," B.B. stands onstage before Muhammad Ali and a crowd of 80,000 on the continent his ancestors left in chains and gives one of the most thrilling performances of his life. "The King of the Blues" (B.B.), "Soul Brother #1" (James Brown) and other African-American artists on the bill reveled in the return to their cultural motherland for a gala affair that was attended by fans and journalists from all over the world. The backstory around this perfonnance is rich. Behind B.B. is a larg...

2011, Live At The Royal Albert Hall with Slash, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Ronnie Wood and Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall.
This clip is a portion of my feature-length documentary, Sing Sing Thanksgiving, recorded in 1972 at the prison in Ossining NY outside of New York City. We got permission to present the concert from the Warden and took full of it to create and then record this incredible event plus tell the lives of some of the inmates who helped make it happen. Regarding the Sing Sing prison performance, B.B. King said in an interview with NPR: "I've played a lot of prisons since but Sing Sing is the only one that I can remember the name of and the reason is because I was scared. I thought it was the end of my life." The experience was an emotionally charged one for King who was initially apprehensive about performing at the prison. However, the performance turned out to be a success, with the inmates ...

Thinking of poems of poverty
Sitting with a tight clenched wrist, thinking how to gain authority
Oh what a soft touch of a boy
He'd wander with pride to sell and keep visions to his self
Visions to his self
We'd talk of treasures, and over-rated games
We'd steal the milk bottles, sneaking through the back round Jimmy's way.
What we loved most of all, was sitting round the shop, while this young boy was sitting all alone,
Sitting all alone
Pondering times of sanctuary
He was taking his piano lessons, we were on half an E
Invested life in medicine, which isn't the wisest way to go,
Had so much shit going on.
Convinced he'd never win. Convinced he was a sin.
We'd speak of women and cheaper carryouts
We'd turn up to all the festivals, trying to bring down the touts,
What we love the most of all was sittin' at the shop, while this poor boy was sittin' all alone,
Sittin' all alone
We'd talk of treasures and overrated games
We'd steal the milk bottles, sneaking through the back round Jimmy's way.
What we loved most of all, was hanging round the shop, while this poor boy was sitting all alone,
He couldn't find none of his own kind, he didn't have none of his own kind
You should take interest in his mind, not spend all of his time wastin all his money and his time
Thinking of poems of poverty
Sitting with a tight clenched wrist, thinking how to gain authority
Oh what a soft touch of a don
He'd wander with pride to sell and keep visions to his self
Visions to his self
We'd talk of treasures, and over-rated games
We'd steal the milk bottles, sneaking through the back round Jimmy's way.
What we loved most of all, was hanging round the shop, while this young boy was sitting all alone,
Sitting all alone
We'd talk of treasures, and over-rated games
We'd steal the milk bottles, sneaking through the back round Jimmy's way.
What we loved most of all was hanging round the shop
What we loved most of all was waiting round the shop
What we loved most of all was sitting at the shop,
