Don Ellis (July 25, 1934 – December 17, 1978) was an American jazz trumpeter, drummer, composer and bandleader. He is best known for his extensive musical experimentation, particularly in the area of unusual time signatures. Later in his life he worked as a film composer, among other works contributing a score to 1971's The French Connection and 1973's The Seven-Ups.
Biography
Early life
Ellis was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 25, 1934. His father was a Methodist minister and his mother a church organist. He attended West High School in Minneapolis, MN. After attending a Tommy Dorsey Big Band concert, he first became interested in jazz. Other early inspirations were Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. He graduated from Boston University in 1956 with a music composition degree.
Early career
Ellis' first job was with the late Glenn Miller's band, then directed by Ray McKinley. He stayed with the band until September 1956, when he joined the U.S. Army's Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra and the Soldiers' Show Company. Ellis was transferred to Frankfurt, Germany for duty. In the Army band, Ellis met pianist Cedar Walton, and saxophonists Eddie Harris and Don Menza. While in that band Ellis had his first opportunity to compose and arrange for a big band.
French Connection II is a 1975 crimedrama film starring Gene Hackman and directed by John Frankenheimer. It is a fictional sequel to the initially true story of the 1971 Academy Award winning picture The French Connection. The film expands on the central character of Det. Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle who travels to Marseille, France where he is attempting to track down French drug-dealer Alain Charnier, who got away at the end of the first film. Hackman and Fernando Rey are the only returning cast members.
Plot
Picking up two or three years after where the original left off, narcotics officer Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) is still searching for elusive drug kingpin Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey). Orders from his superiors send Doyle to Marseilles, France, to track down the criminal mastermind and bust his drug ring. Once in France, Doyle is met by Inspector Henri Barthélémy (Bernard Fresson), who resents his rude and crude crimefighting demeanor. Doyle then begins to find himself as a fish out of water in France, where he is matched with a language he cannot understand. Doyle is shown round the police station where he finds his desk is situated directly outside the toilets. He tells Barthélémy that he is not satisfied with this positioning and hopes it is not a joke at his expense. Barthélémy informs Doyle that he has read his personnel file and is aware of his reputation and especially hopes he has not brought a gun with him as it is strictly forbidden in France for visiting police officers from other countries to carry firearms.

Don Ellis - French Connection II Suite
This is a little suite of four of my favorite cues from the soundtrack Don wrote for The French Connection II. It's more traditional soundtrack scoring than his work on the original film.
The mix comes from the original tapes, not the remixed version that was commercially released on CD. The four sections are, 1) Main Title/Theme, 2) Waterfront, 3) Ambush, 4) The Big Chase. "The Big Chase" wasn't used in the final film for the most part. For those who know the CD mix, this original mix has a different rhythmic feel right at the beginning and you can also better hear the lead trumpet playing of Bud Brisbois at the end.
Perhaps not immediately obvious are the different treatments of the main theme in each of the cues.

If this life is like a movie, then you're right, I know everything. So hold out for the end title. But I won't wait. I won't wait for you. You want me to believe in nothing. You're hearing me out again. Again I say it's time to move on. Save yourself the hurt and shame of saying goodbye and hearing no reply. I do what you say; you ask of me. But no one has to see us. You want me to believe in nothing.
