Heart failure with reduced and preserved ejection fraction, pathophysiology and treatment
Heart failure is a disorder in which the heart cannot pump blood to the body at a rate that is needed causing symptoms of shortness of breath and fatigue. When cardiac output is reduced, when the heart fails, a number of adaptations occur both in the heart and systemically these are early adaption and chronic adaptation.
Ventricular muscle remodelling and hypertrophy and subsequent dysfunction is characteristic of heart failure. There are two broad remodelling processes that occur in heart failure: Eccentric and Concentric remodelling. This is typically known as heart failure with reduced ejection fraction vs heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

What Causes Heart Failure? - Yale Medicine Explains
The heart is a muscle and it's main job is to pump blood but certain things can cause that muscle to fail. There are genetic reasons, there are reasons related to valve disease, and there's a viral infection that affects the heart called myocarditis. The most common cause of heart failure is a heart attack. Fatty plaque builds up in the blood vessel that supplies the heart itself and unless that blood vessel is opened up immediately that muscle will die. The rest of the muscle that's not dead anymore has to do extra to keep on pumping the blood and overtime it cannot keep and that's when heart failure develops.

Understanding the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, and treatments for congestive heart failure (CHF) is essential for nursing students preparing for exams and the NCLEX.
This video covers the causes of CHF like hypertension, cardiomyopathy, and valvular disorders that can lead to impairment of the heart's pumping ability. Key signs and symptoms of CHF that nurses must know include fatigue, shortness of breath, peripheral edema, and weight gain from fluid overload. Managing CHF involves diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, and diet and fluid restrictions. Reviewing the major characteristics of systolic versus diastolic CHF, nursing interventions, and medications will get you ready to successfully answer exam questions about this common cardiovascular disorder.
