Taipei lifts 60-meter building height cap in surrounds of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall|Taiwan News
Taipei City has removed a longstanding restriction on the height of buildings around Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. For 20 years, the maximum height of buildings was capped at 60 meters. The restriction gave rise to protests from residents, who say that the limit would make urban renewal projects unprofitable for developers. Starting Jan. 1, all height restrictions will be lifted. That’s except for the north side of the memorial hall, where building height is determined by aviation regulations.
The vicinity of Sun Yat-sen Memorial hall in Taipei has long had a building height limit of 60 meters, meaning that, besides the Taipei Dome, no tall buildings have been built in the area. Critics of the height limit say the policy posed an obstacle to urban renewal, giving rise to protests from local ...

Taiwan's outlying atolls of Wuqiu, Donsha and Taiping could be vulnerable to surprise attacks by China, according to former deputy commander of the Taiwanese air force Chang Yen-ting. Speaking at a conference Tuesday, Chang says these positions are "hard to defend."
According to official sources, the Wuqiu Islands are not self-sufficient in basic supplies, including water. This means the islands' marine garrison and the small civilian population are dependent on supply ships from the main island of Taiwan.
The Taipei Times reports Taiping Island, also known as Itu Aba, is allocated six 155 mm howitzers in the event that the coast guard garrison is threatened by hostile action. However, these weapons are held in reserve off the island and would not be available if the base was subjected to a surprise attack.
At the event, Chang pointed out that China has increased the frequency of air and naval patrols near Taiwan's air defense identification zone and sovereign waters. He was cited by Taiwan's Central News Agency as saying Taiwan should monitor these movements in case quantitative changes become qualitative.

While the whole world was in a panic, only in Taiwan was there life as usual. I’d like to thank Chen Shih-chung once again.
Seeing the outpouring of support from academia, including from researchers who returned home from abroad, Chen felt moved to comment.

Elections only last a short time, but the country will be here forever. We can’t allow the elections to be a time for people to express hatred, to destroy trust and to smear others. If we engage in the same behavior in response, Taiwan will be torn apart.
According to a poll by Liberty Times, Chen is currently in the lead in the polls with a support rating of 34.8%. KMT mayoral candidate Chiang Wan-an came in second in the survey with 28.71%, with independent candidate Huang Shan-shan following closely behind Chiang.
Chen Shih-chung
DPP Taipei mayoral candidate
We are definitely very happy to be in the lead, and to have everyone’s support. We’ll work hard until the very last minute.
Chiang Wan-an
KMT Taipei mayoral candidate
We’ll double up our efforts, and canvas everywhere.
Huang Shan-shan
Independent Taipei mayoral candidate
Head out on the street and see how people respond to you. I think candidates know whether people are friendly toward them.
With local elections barely more than a week away, candidates are making a last ditch effort to garner public support. One poll shows the DPP in the lead for Taipei, but until ballots are counted, it’s anyone’s best guess.

The vicinity of Sun Yat-sen Memorial hall in Taipei has long had a building height limit of 60 meters, meaning that, besides the Taipei Dome, no tall buildings have been built in the area. Critics of the height limit say the policy posed an obstacle to urban renewal, giving rise to protests from local residents.
Voice of Feng Shih-tsui
Head of alliance for removing height limit
Having water leaks at home is the norm. Our building itself is only 12 floors tall and the height limit is 60 meters. If we want to rebuild with a developer, there’ll be no profit in it for them. If we turn a 12-story building into a 15-story building, that’s only three extra floors. The developers say they’d go ahead with it, but with much smaller floor areas for each unit.
Residents in the area have frequently engaged with the government to remove the height limit. And finally on Thursday, Taipei’s Urban Planning Commission voted unanimously to lift the cap. Buildings along Zhongxiao East Road will still be subject to a height limit of 95.49 meters due to their proximity to Songshan Airport, but no special restrictions will limit building height on any of the other three roads encircling the memorial hall. On those three sides, maximum height will be determined by regulations in the Building Act. The height cap will be officially lifted starting Jan. 1, 2024.
Hung Chien-yi
Taipei councilor (DPP)
The rate of urban renewal will become faster, and willingness to renew buildings a second time will grow. In the future, the area will change to become a great environment for commerce, study and residence.
Six years after the completion of Sun Yat-sen Memorial hall in 1972, the city government set a maximum building height of 35 meters on all four sides of the grounds. The policy was later revised in 2004 to raise the height cap to 60 meters. Now, 20 years after that, the limit is getting lifted altogether.
Wang Yu-fen
Taipei Department of Urban Development
The height limit had been set to preserve the skyline, but that actually made it less interesting to look at. They did some visual simulations and dynamic simulations, and in the end the commission agreed to relax the rules.
Taipei’s Department of Urban Development says that, although the height cap will be removed, it will also introduce some new rules. The buildings on both sides of the memorial hall will only be allowed to use subdued colors on their facades. And on the east side, new buildings will have to be set 4 meters back so as to not disturb the views. The city government says the new rules will usher in major improvements to living quality and to the urban landscape of the area.

The 2023 Hot Spring Festival in Taipei is underway. This year, organizers invited some 500 people from Japan’s Matsuyama City, which is famous for its ancient hot spring, the Dogo Onsen. The guests brought four grand palanquins from across the sea.
These palanquins will appear on the streets of Taipei in ceremonies that pray for good fortune. On Saturday and Sunday, four palanquin ceremonies will unfold at three venues: Xinbeitou MRT Station, the Ciyou Temple in Songshan District, and Taipei City Hall Square. Traffic controls will be in place, and locals are invited to come and experience Japanese culture up close.

OUR FIRST TIME IN TAIWAN SHOCKED US! FIRST DAY IN TAIPEI 臺北 🇹🇼
Join us on our first day in Taipei, Taiwan! It’s our first time in the country of Taiwan, so of course, we start out by trying some local Taiwanese food, which was outstanding! Next, we head out to the bustling streets of Taipei and start exploring the surrounding area. It wouldn’t be a proper experience in Taiwan if we didn’t try an iconic bubble tea. We stumbled upon some beautiful art and street performers, which was so much fun! To end our day, we take the metro to Taipei 101, where we had a beautiful view over the city. Wow, what a great first day in Taiwan!

Renowned for their soup dumplings, Din Tai Fung has opened locations around the world. In July, the Taiwanese restaurant opened a location in the heart of Broadway in New York City. Its 182nd location is also the chain’s largest, providing 450 seats. Foodies are flocking to the restaurant, which has a waitlist so long that diners are having to wait months for a table. The New York Post even called it “one of NYC’s hardest reservations.”
Deft hands make 18 perfect folds. These soup dumplings are from none other than Din Tai Fung. It’s not only a must-have for travelers to Taiwan, but in July the restaurant also opened its 182nd location in New York City. The location is also the chain’s largest.
Joeman
YouTuber
It’s three times the price of Din Tai Fung in Taiwan. The pork chop fried rice is US$21. That’s NT$600 for fried rice. I think the soup dumplings are 90% to 100% the same. If you’re coming for the dumplings, I think it’s worthwhile.
The YouTuber Joeman went to the restaurant and shared his thoughts on the food. He said it’s similar to Din Tai Fung in Taiwan. The location right on Broadway seats 450 and is well furnished. Even New Yorkers are going crazy for it.
The New York Post said that the restaurant is “one of NYC’s hardest reservations—but the soup dumplings are totally worth it.” The article praised the soup dumplings as “silken on the tongue and explosive on the palate.” But it criticized the online reservation system as “near-useless,” with a supposedly months-long waiting list.
Fei Chi
Food critic
This isn’t Din Tai Fung’s first international restaurant. Whether it’s their soup dumplings, fried rice, or their wildly successful chocolate dumplings or truffle soup dumplings, it’s well-liked both in Taiwan and abroad.
Aside from the soup dumplings, the New York Post reviewer also loved the pork chop fried rice and spicy cucumber salad. With 182 stores worldwide, and now its largest in the heart of New York City, Din Tai Fung is once again making a name for Taiwanese cuisine around the world.
