Microplastic sampling in the Tamsui River in Taiwan
We went out for sampling on the Tamsui River in urban Taipei to collect microplastic particles from the river surface using a manta net. This time we had the chance to use a boat, which gave us the chance to closely observe the behavior of the manta net. Before we always lowered the net from a bridge and the view was often obscured.

Volunteers canoe along Tamsui River to collect trash
A retired Englishman named Peter Lowe came to Taiwan to visit his son this year. When his flight was canceled due to COVID, he extended his stay and spearheaded a cleanup campaign for the Tamsui River. Lowe was astonished by the amount of garbage he discovered in the river. He began picking up the trash himself, bit by bit. Along the way, he''s inspired a devoted bunch of locals to do the same. Stephany Yang has the story.

This animation by MIR and Morean shows Zaha Hadid Architects' proposal for a 920-metre-long bridge across the mouth of the Tamsui River in the Taiwanese capital.
Billed as "the world's largest asymmetric cable-stayed bridge with a single tower", the Danjiang Bridge will be supported by just one 175-metre-high concrete mast to reduce its visual impact on the Taipei skyline.
Its steel deck will create a new route for cars, trains and pedestrians, easing congestion on existing transport networks.
Zaha Hadid Architects – which has previously completed bridges in Spain and Abu Dhabi – is partnering with engineer Sinotech Engineering Consultants and master builder Leonhardt, Andrä & Partner on the project.
Conceived as part of a wider upgrade of infrastructure in northern Taiwan, the bridge will connect the urban centres of Tamsui to the east and Bali to the west, linking Highways 2 and 15, with the West Coast and the Bali-Xindian expressways.
It will allow the Danhai Light Rail Transportation (DHLRT) system to extend, joining Taipei's public rail network with Bali and the Port of Taipei – the region's busiest shipping port.
"By reducing traffic from the congested Guandu Bridge upriver, the Danjiang Bridge will greatly improve the northern coast traffic system and enhance accessibility throughout the region," said Zaha Hadid Architects.

Stephany Yang
Formosa News reporter
We are currently at Tamsui River. There is quite a lot of trash along the river banks. A group of volunteers come here a few times a week to clean up the trash.
Peter Lowe
Volunteer
The worst is this kind of plastic, which breaks up into tiny micro-particles, which goes into the food chain. And the fish, shrimp and prawns eat it. And then everyone eats the fish, shrimps, and the prawns. It''s terrible really.
Along the shore of the Tamsui River, there are a few items that don''t belong: plastic water bottles, Styrofoam, fishermen nets, plastic crates, and more. The trash strewn here varies, ranging from the plastic bags and PET bottles to household waste. After discovering the astonishing volume of garbage here, Lowe rolled up his sleeves and got to work.
Peter Lowe
Volunteer
We usually find plastic bottles, fishermen nets, plastic crates, all sorts of plastics, plastic bags. Plastic bags are very terrible because they look like squid. When they are in the sea, because they''re clear like squid, and whales and that kind of creature eats them. They get plastic in their stomaches. It happens alot all around the world, it''s a global problem, it''s not just here, it''s global. If it doesn''t get stopped now, if we don''t stop this now, what will the future hold? I don''t know.
There are now 20 volunteers who join Lowe. They row their canoes and sampans two to three days a week along Tamsui River to pick up rubbish along the riverbank and mangrove. As the tide rises and falls at the estuary, trash gets stuck between branches in the mangroves on both sides. The volunteers have to work together to pull up garbage that''s buried deep in the river.
Stephany Yang
Formosa News reporter
We found quite a lot of trash along the mangroves as well. As you can see, I found a bucket.
Peter Lowe
There''s also a lot of plastic that gets hung up in the mangrove trees just on the edges. That''s full of bird life, insect lives, and all sorts of different lives, and they''re living among plastic. And when I see it, I feel sad actually. I''ve seen birds tangled up with fishing nets, birds tangled up with plastic bags around them. Another bad one is face masks, when they get discarded, they have a string and the end, and it can strangle birds feet as well.
Chen Ming-chung
Volunteer
I was the first person to discover that Peter was picking up rubbish. Seeing how hard he worked, I felt deeply moved. I think we need help him. After all, the power of any one person is limited. If we can influence other people, other people in Taipei, then the waters of Taipei City will become very clean.
Chen Ming-chung, a volunteer as well as a boatmaker, said that each time they go out, the volunteers gather more than 20 bags of garbage in just two hours. Without their boats, the volunteers would not be able to transport all that waste. So far they''ve mostly found food wrappers, and a large number of glass bottles. They also found a number of discarded hypodermic syringes and some collapsible road signs from roadworks. This group of volunteers is mostly retirees. They range from a former shoe factory owner, martial arts teacher, financial specialist, shipbuilder, and costume designer. There''s also a 22-year-old.
Shao Chun-te
Volunteer
A lot of rubbish is buried there, and then we can''t pull it up. Our efforts alone are not enough. I hope that through this activity, everyone will pay attention to this issue.
Yang-lin
Volunteer
There''s a large amount of Styrofoam garbage. Many fishermen use this as a buoy. I hope that the government can restrict its use. It is cheap and easy to use, but is discarded very quickly. If they don''t have a place to recycle it, they throw it into the river. It''s so easy for the fish to eat it.

In the mangroves here, all the rubbish comes down from Taipei. Gets brought up by the tide and deposited here.
These volunteers say there''s also quite a bit of trash along the sidewalk. The volunteers hope to encourage everyone who comes to the river to pick up trash when they see it, to do their part in keeping Taiwan''s rivers clean for everyone to enjoy.

We are currently at Tamsui River. There is quite a lot of trash along the river banks. A group of volunteers come here a few times a week to clean up the trash.

We found quite a lot of trash along the mangroves as well. As you can see, I found a bucket.

A lot of rubbish is buried there, and then we can''t pull it up. Our efforts alone are not enough. I hope that through this activity, everyone will pay attention to this issue.
