Welcome back to our Taiwanese Street Food tour series. This is episode 3. In today’s video, we are focusing on delicious MOUNTAIN cuisine in Maokong, just outside of Taipei City.
We start our day at Bitan Scenic area (Xindian Station) to eat a traditional Taiwanese meal for breakfast. I'm a Taiwanese American that grew up in Southern California and have moved back to Taiwan to Taipei in 2012. Join me and my wife as we explore Taiwan's night markets, popular and hidden destinations.
We'll explore Taiwan's Night Markets, street foods and travel scene. Along with the popular places in Taiwan, over time we'll go in depth to many places other youtubers never visit since we know most of the local and hidden spots and are able to explore smaller towns and far away villages that need a car to reach. Taiwan is a magical island with tens of thousands of temples, shrines, amazing food, endless 7-11s and boba shops and vending machines.
I'll give you my perspective having lived in both countries for many years.

There are two choices of cable cars to ride at the Maokong Gondolas, a standard cable car and a glass bottomed cable car (called Crystal Cabins). We chose to ride a standard cable car as we wanted to have the cable car to ourselves as we were filming this video. The queue for the Glass Floor Cable Car was too long and even if we waited in the queue we would have to share the cable car with other travelers which would not be practical as we were filming this Taipei Travel Guide video.
Once we get onboard our Gondola (cable car) we show you parts of the journey as we make our way from the Maokong Gondola (貓空纜車) to the Tea Plantations located at the top of the mountain. On the way up we pass over jungle, the Taipei Zoo, some Chinese Temples until we eventually reach our destination, the peak at Maokong. This Taiwan Cable Car system is 4.3 kilometers long and there are 4 stops along the way, Taipei Zoo (動物園), Taipei Zoo South (動物園南), Zhinan Temple (指南宮), Maokong (Saxuan Temple) (貓空). Detailed information about Ticket Prices for the cable-way, and yes you can use the Taipei Easycard as this Cable Car Network is part of the Taipei MRT System, can be viewed on the Maokong Gondola website. This is part 1 of our trip to the Tea Plantations of Maokong where we show you the ride on this fantastic cableway. In part 2 we show you the Tea Houses and take you for a walk on the mountain with us.
Wiki writes about the Taipei MRT (Taipei Metro), "Taipei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), branded as Taipei Metro, is a metro system serving Taipei and New Taipei, Taiwan, operated by government owned Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation, which also operates Maokong Gondola.. Taipei Metro was the first metro system in Taiwan. The initial network was approved for construction in 1986 and work started two years later. The first line opened in 1996 and by 2000, 62 stations were in service on three main lines. Over the next nine years the number of passengers had increased by 70%. Since 2008, the network has expanded to 117 stations and the passenger count has grown by another 66%.. The system has often been praised for its safety, reliability and quality. It has become effective in relieving traffic congestion in Taipei, with over two million trips made daily. The system has also proven effective as a catalyst for urban renewal..."

The Maokong Gondola is a great way to get out of the confines of the city for an afternoon and enjoy the serine surroundings of Maokong.
Combining this with a trip to the zoo or simply spending the entire day in the mountains, is a day well spent!
With two stations right next to the Taipei Zoo, the Maokong Gondola is a fantastic cable car ride which terminates at Maokong, a mountainside township known for producing some of the best tea in Taiwan.
The gondola also stops at Zhinan Temple, a beautiful temple set on the mountainside. Both Zhinan and Maokong offer unparalleled views of the city of Taipei.
Zhinan Temple, also known as Xiangong Temple, combines Daoism, Buddism and Confucianism, and is one of the most sacred Daoist temples in Taiwan.
At the top of the mountain you can hike the trails, see the tea plantations and eventually reach Zhangshan Temple.
The weather was rainy on the day I went but I would still recommend going. Take the crystal cabin gondola if possible for 360 degree views of the ride up.
Enjoy the video!

We ordered rice noodle soup 米粉湯, braised tofu 滷豆腐, crispy ribs 脆骨 (which were not crispy at all), and boiled radish 蘿蔔. The food was simple and fresh, and very affordable at 140 NTD (USD $4.66).
It was then time to hike one of our favorite trails in Taipei known as Yinhe Trail. Our taxi from Xindian Station to the trailhead was 175 NTD (USD $5.83). There is a cave/temple/waterfall you can visit and continue along the trail to reach Maokong, which used to grow the most tea for Taipei. There are still lots of tea farms dotted along the mountains. In Maokong, there are many tea houses and restaurants serving food and snacks infused with tea. We ordered a set meal that included tea fried rice, tea smoked chicken, mountain style shrimp, egg tofu with tea leaves and a chicken and mushroom soup. The entire set came to 1000 NTD (USD $33.29). For dessert, we had an oolong tea popsicle.
From Maokong, we made our way back to Taipei via Maokong Gondola using the Crystal Cabin. The Crystal Cabin has a glass floor to allow 360° views of the tea fields, rolling mountains and Taipei 101 in the distance. The gondola is easy to use using EasyCard costing 100 NTD (USD $3.33).
