Located next to an oceanic trench and volcanic system in a tectonic collision zone, Taiwan has evolved a unique environment that produces high-temperature springs with crystal-clear water, usually both clean and safe to drink. These hot springs are not only clean and potable but also commonly used for spas and resorts.
History
The first mention of Taiwan's hot springs came from a 1697 manuscript, Beihai Jiyou (裨海紀遊), but they were not developed until 1893, when a German businessman discovered Beitou and later established a small local spa. Under Japanese rule, the government constantly promoted and further enhanced the natural hot springs. The Japanese rule brought with them their rich onsen culture of spring soaking, which had a great influence on Taiwan.
In March 1896, Hirado Gengo from Osaka, Japan opened Taiwan's first hot spring hotel, called Tenguan. He not only heralded a new era of hot spring bathing in Beitou, but also paved the road for a whole new hot spring culture for Taiwan. In the Japanese onsen culture, hot springs are claimed to offer many health benefits. As well as raising energy levels, the minerals in the water are commonly suggested to help treat chronic fatigue, eczema or arthritis.
A hot spring is a spring produced by the emergence of geothermally heatedgroundwater that rises from the Earth's crust. There are geothermal hot springs in many locations all over the crust of the earth. While some of these springs contain water that is the correct temperature for bathing, others are too hot to do so and immersion can result in injury or death.
Definitions
There is no universally accepted definition of a hot spring. For example, one can find the phrase hot spring defined as any geothermal spring
a spring with water temperatures above its surroundings
a natural spring with water temperature above body temperature– normally between 36.5 and 37.5°C (97.7 and 99.5°F)
a natural spring with warm water above body temperature
a thermal spring with water warmer than 36.7°C (98°F)
a natural spring of water greater than 21.1°C (70°F) (synonymous with thermal spring)
a natural discharge of groundwater with elevated temperatures
a type of thermal spring in which hot water is brought to the surface. The water temperature of a hot spring is usually 6.5°C (12°F) or more above mean air temperature. Note that by this definition, "thermal spring" is not synonymous with the term "hot spring"
Hot Springs were an indie-rock band formed in 2004 based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They were unique in the Montreal music scene, in that they had an equal fan-base within both the francophone and anglophone communities.
History
Formed in the spring of 2004, Hot Springs featured Giselle Webber on vocals and guitar, Rémy Nadeau-Aubin on guitar, Frédéric Sauvé on bass and Anne Gauthier on drums (previously Karine Lauzon).
Since their release of Rock Partouze in 2005, Hot Springs had gained a large amount of attention in the Canadian independent music scene, with their track "Caco Disco" hitting No.1 on the local college charts, MIMI (Montreal Independent Music Initiative) nominations in both the EP and Rising Star categories, and numerous radio and television spots within the francophone media circuit.
The band's first, and only, full length album, Volcano was released on September 18, 2007, under Quire Records.

Planning your own trip to Taipei's Beitou District? Add these to your itinerary!
1. Check out the Xinbeitou Historic Station, which was built during the Japanese colonial period! It is also the only remaining original station on the Tamsui line!
2. Visit the Ketagalan Culture Center to learn more about the indigenous cultures of Taiwan.
3. Stroll through the beautiful Beitou Park
4. Check out the Beitou Public Library! (We didn't film inside, but it is cool to see!)
5. Head to the Beitou Hot Spring Museum to gain some insight on the region's hot spring culture and traditions.
6. Take a dip in one of Beitou's public hot springs - be sure to come prepared with the proper attire!
7. Or relax for a while and book a room at one of Beitou's many hot spring hotels! (If you're interested we stayed at the Royal Seasons Hotel Hot Spring Beitou - it was a bit dated but we LOVED the experience!)
8. Grab a delicious local snack at the Beitou Market!
9. Get some exercise on one of Beitou's many beautiful hiking trails! (We did Phoenix Mountain which had a great overlook of the city!)
10. Visit the Puji Temple to see one of the last surviving Japanese-era buddhist temples in Taiwan.
11. Walk to the the Thermal Valley where you can see some of Taiwan's geothermal activity! And it's just really beautiful! :)
12. Dip you feet in the pools at Fuxing Park! It's a good way to experience the hot spings if it is hot out and it's fun, relaxing, and free for visitors! :)
