The Srebrenica massacre, also known as the Srebrenica genocide (Bosnian:Masakar u Srebrenici; Genocid u Srebrenici), was the genocidal killing, in July 1995, of more than 8,000 Muslim Bosniaks, mainly men and boys, in and around the town of Srebrenica during the Bosnian War.
The killings were perpetrated by units of the Bosnian Serb Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) under the command of General Ratko Mladić. The Scorpions, a paramilitary unit from Serbia, who had been part of the Serbian Interior Ministry until 1991, also participated in the massacre. In April 1993 the United Nations had declared the besieged enclave of Srebrenica—in the Drina Valley of northeastern Bosnia—a "safe area" under UN protection. However, in July 1995, UNPROFOR's 370Dutchbat soldiers in Srebrenica failed to prevent the town's capture by the VRS — and the subsequent massacre.
In 2004, in a unanimous ruling on the case of Prosecutor v. Krstić, the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), located in the Hague, ruled that the massacre of the enclave's male inhabitants constituted genocide, a crime under international law. The ruling was also upheld by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2007. The forcible transfer of between 25,000 and 30,000 Bosniak women, children and elderly which accompanied the massacre was found to constitute genocide, when accompanied with the killings and separation of the men.
During the Bosnian War, the town was the site of a July 1995 massacre of the town's Bosniak population, determined to have been a crime of genocide.
On 24 March 2007, Srebrenica's municipal assembly adopted a resolution demanding independence from the Republika Srpska entity (although not from Bosnia's sovereignty); the Serb members of the assembly did not vote on the resolution.
Local communities
The municipality (општина or opština) is further subdivided into the following local communities (мјесне заједнице or mjesne zajednice):
The borders of the municipality in the 1953 and 1961 census were different. In 1953, Muslims by nationality had been yet to emerge as an ethnicity leading Slavic Muslims to identify as Yugoslavs. As Yugoslav was itself not adopted in 1948, they were all classified as other. In 2003, Bosnian Serbs comprised 95% of the population of Srebrenica.

Srebrenica Genocide: No Room For Denial
In July 1995, forces of the Army of the Republika Srpska, the VRS, invaded the town of Srebrenica, in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In a few horrific days, more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim boys and men were taken to places of detention, abused, tortured and then executed.
As their bodies fell into mass graves, the machinery of denial of those crimes was set into motion.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia-commonly referred to as the ICTY, investigated, prosecuted and passed judgement on those crimes.

But even now, after the recovery of thousands of victims and war-crimes trials for a number of those responsible, some still deny that the genocide took place.

When Serb forces occupied Srebrenica in July 1995, Dutch UN forces were given strict orders not to intervene. Today the peacekeepers reflect on their shame at not being able to protect those killed.
Under General Ratko Mladic, thousands of Serb families were separated and men dragged to their deaths. The Dutch peacekeepers helped the Serb forces to separate men and women, not understanding they were helping this mass murder. The soldiers who were there can never forget what happened and their memories bring shame instead of pride. Former UN soldier, Adje Anakotta, explains: "We want the people of Srebrenica to know that we feel the tragedy just as much as they do. We have all been abandoned - both the people of Srebrenica and us soldiers."
Henry Van De Belt is one of the few former UN soldiers to return to Srebrenica after 1995. He still remembers trying to block out the guilt and the effect it had on his fellow soldiers. "I needed to drink so that I wouldnt have to face it. Some have not even managed to return. They were killed or committed suicide. Those guys saw no way out."

This film tells that story.
Running time: 64 minutes
25 years ago the worst atrocity in Europe since the Nazis took place — the murder of 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica, by Bosnian-Serb forces.
Every year, the anniversary is marked by a mass gathering and dozens of funerals, as more bodies are identified and returned to their families.
But even now, after the recovery of thousands of victims and war-crimes trials for a number of those responsible, some still deny that the genocide took place.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Special Correspondent Allan Little, who at the time reported extensively on the Bosnian war for the BBC.

Srebrenica: The Trauma of the Blue Berets (2008) - This documentary reflects on the role of the Dutch peacekeeping force who were ordered not to intervene in the Serbia genocide, reflecting general UN anxieties of 'mission creep' throughout the Yugoslav intervention.
