During the Bosnian War, the town was the site of a July 1995 massacre of the town's Bosniak population, determined to have been a crime of genocide.
On 24 March 2007, Srebrenica's municipal assembly adopted a resolution demanding independence from the Republika Srpska entity (although not from Bosnia's sovereignty); the Serb members of the assembly did not vote on the resolution.
Local communities
The municipality (општина or opština) is further subdivided into the following local communities (мјесне заједнице or mjesne zajednice):
The borders of the municipality in the 1953 and 1961 census were different. In 1953, Muslims by nationality had been yet to emerge as an ethnicity leading Slavic Muslims to identify as Yugoslavs. As Yugoslav was itself not adopted in 1948, they were all classified as other. In 2003, Bosnian Serbs comprised 95% of the population of Srebrenica.
Srebrenica Massacre Explained: Europe’s Muslim Genocide | Dr. Omar Suleiman
On the 29th anniversary of the Bosnian Genocide, which saw the brutal killing of over 8,000 Bosniak Muslims by a Serbian nationalist militia, Dr. Omar Suleiman reflects on the dehumanization that precedes genocide. He poses a crucial question: Would the victims have faced the same fate if they had not been Muslim?

Srebrenica Genocide Day Marked Globally, but Still a Divisive Issue for Bosnia
This week marks 29 years since the Bosnian Serb army butchered and killed more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys in and around the town of Srebrenica during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The remains of their bodies have been found in dozens of mass graves in hilly and forested areas in the country's east. The killings happened even as Srebrenica was deemed a safe zone under the protection of the United Nations. This year's anniversary comes just months after the UN General Assembly declared the 11th of July an annual day of remembrance of the genocide. Every year, new victims are identified and given a proper burial.

When Serb forces occupied Srebrenica in July 1995, Dutch UN forces were given strict orders not to intervene. Today the peacekeepers reflect on their shame at not being able to protect those killed.
Under General Ratko Mladic, thousands of Serb families were separated and men dragged to their deaths. The Dutch peacekeepers helped the Serb forces to separate men and women, not understanding they were helping this mass murder. The soldiers who were there can never forget what happened and their memories bring shame instead of pride. Former UN soldier, Adje Anakotta, explains: "We want the people of Srebrenica to know that we feel the tragedy just as much as they do. We have all been abandoned - both the people of Srebrenica and us soldiers."
Henry Van De Belt is one of the few former UN soldiers to return to Srebrenica after 1995. He still remembers trying to block out the guilt and the effect it had on his fellow soldiers. "I needed to drink so that I wouldnt have to face it. Some have not even managed to return. They were killed or committed suicide. Those guys saw no way out."

Milan Jevtic, Rajko Calmic, Ostoja Perisic and Dejan Milanovic were charged with committing crimes against humanity for their alleged involvement in capturing and killing 31 men and boys from Srebrenica in 1995....
The year just gone demonstrated Serbia’s continued reluctance to face the crimes of the past, with some officials even trying to rewrite far more distant historical events ....
It is now becoming increasingly clear that the Saydnaya affair was conceived as but an overture for a larger propaganda operation that is to follow, to fabricate a SyrianSrebrenica.
Efforts to deliver justice for war crime victims stagnated, while the disputes around the Srebrenica genocide resolution at the United Nations again highlighted the deep divisions that persist in Bosnia and Herzegovina....
He has served over two-thirds of his 35-year prison sentence for “aiding and abetting” the alleged genocide in Srebrenica in July of 1995... It became the model for all subsequent Srebrenica proceedings before the Hague Tribunal ... Rethinking Srebrenica.
Twenty years ago, when the judges delivered Krstić's sentence, they concluded that Srebrenica was a textbook case of genocide ... Like Srebrenica, Gaza has been turned into hell on earth ... in Srebrenica.
The SrebrenicaMemorial Centre’s new report on genocide denial shows a significant increase in the number of incidents, returning to levels not seen since the adoption of legislation criminalising such rhetoric in 2021 ....
