Fears of new conflict as Bosnia-Herzegovina faces growing Serb nationalism - BBC News
The peace agreement that holds together Bosnia-Herzegovina is under threat from a rise in Serb nationalism.
More than three years of war in the 1990s devastated Bosnia after the fall of Yugoslavia. Tens of thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands were driven from their homes by ethnic cleansing.
The war ended in 1995 with a peace treaty that split the country into two parts: a Bosniak Muslim and Croat federation - and the other a Serb entity called Republika Srpska.
Now an ongoing political crisis and the resurgence of Serb nationalism under Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodic, is stirring up fears of renewed conflict.

Bosnia's Serbs celebrate action that triggered war
(9 Jan 2020) Bosnia's Serbs on Thursday observed a public holiday that has been declared illegal by the country's top court and criticized by other ethnic groups because it celebrates an action that triggered the country's devastating war in the 1990s.

(9 Jan 2020) Bosnia's Serbs on Thursday observed a public holiday that has been declared illegal by the country's top court and criticized by other ethnic groups because it celebrates an action that triggered the country's devastating war in the 1990s.
Several thousand people, including senior officials from the Serb part of Bosnia and from neighboring Serbia attended a parade of more than 2,000 police personnel, war veterans and others in the northwestern town of Banja Luka, Bosnia's biggest Serb-run city.
The holiday marks the date in 1992 when Bosnian Serbs declared the creation of their own state in Bosnia, igniting the country's four-year war which killed over 100,000 people and left millions homeless.
Bosnia's Muslims and Croats have argued that the holiday does not represent all of the country's ethnic groups.
Bosnia's Constitutional Court also has ruled that the law which established the holiday was unconstitutional.
Bosnia's Serbs insist that the holiday is not directed against anyone but serves to celebrate their entity.
Belgrade backed the Bosnian Serbs during the war.
Serbia's Prime Minister Ana Brnabic attended the event, while Serbia's Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin received a decoration in a ceremony during the proceedings.

(9 Nov 1994) Bosnian Serb representatives are meeting in Pale to debate whether to declare all-out war.
This follows a series of defeats at the hands of Bosnian government forces.
APTV reports from behind Serb lines:
Bosnian Serb military and civilian leaders met in the serb stronghold Pale near Sarajevo to plan a response to the battlefield successes of their enemy. It is widely expected that they will declare "all out war" against Bosnian government and Croat forces. Last week, Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic, announced a general mobilisation.
The upsurge in fighting throughout Bosnia has placed increased pressure on the United Nations' relief efforts.
Just 15 km north of Kupres, recently captured by Bosnian government and Croat forces, Bosnian serb civilians were trying to escape the bloodshed. Exhausted they gathered around campfires in an effort to keep warm.
Winter is approaching fast and they will have to find shelter soon to escape the bitter cold typical of this region during winter.
Small groups of Bosnian Serb soldiers could also be seen on tractor drawn trailers in an effort to rejoin the main body of their army. This Bosnian Serb soldier proudly showed a Bosnian government army insignia which he claimed he captured off a Bosnian muslim fighter.
More groups of soldiers could be seen on the road towards the village of Strojice where the Bosnian Serb command is apparently trying to regroup their forces. Soldiers could be seen everywhere in small groups, some saying good-bye to friends and family.
But this cannot hide the fact that the Bosnian Serbs suffered a humiliating defeat, if not militarily then psychologically.
In the village of Sipovo, hundreds of Bosnian Serb refugees have found shelter in a school building, hastily converted into a refugee center. The floor have been covered with foam mattresses and blankets as more refugees mostly women and children continue to arrives.
Many have been on the road for days, the faces show the fear and exhaustion they have had to endure. Many are so exhausted that they simply lie down in a corner and sleep.
But this man wants to fight on.
SOUNDBITE:
I wish the world would leave us alone. Then we could get our weapons and show the Muslims what we are made of.
SUPER CAPTION: Bosnian serb refugee
But for these children peace is the only hope for a better future.

https://wn.com/Bosnia_Serbs_Discuss_Possibility_Of_All_Out_War

But for these children peace is the only hope for a better future.
