Shrewsbury Castle

Shrewsbury Castle is a red sandstone castle in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. It stands on a hill in the neck of the meander of the River Severn on which the town originally developed. The castle is situated directly above Shrewsbury railway station and is a Grade I listed building

Shrewsbury Castle

It was built as a defensive fortification for the town, which was otherwise protected by the river. Town walls, of which little now remains, then radiated out from the castle and surrounded the town (although the area known now as Town Walls still has a small section of it and a tower known as Town Walls Tower and in the care of the National Trust).

In 1138, King Stephen successfully besieged the castle held by William FitzAlan for the Empress Maud during the period known as The Anarchy. The castle was also briefly held by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, prince of Wales, in 1215. Little of this original physical structure remains.

Twentieth Century

The Shropshire Horticultural Society purchased the castle from a private owner and gave it to the town in 1924. Until 1981, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council meetings, where the full council would be present, used the castle's hall. Meetings later moved to Oakley Manor in Belle Vue, and then to the Guildhall in Frankwell.

Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury (ⁱ/ˈʃroʊzbri/ or ⁱ/ˈʃruːzbri/) is the county town of Shropshire, England. It is on the River Severn and has a population of approximately 72,000.

Shrewsbury is a market town whose centre has a largely unaltered medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. The town has historically been a centre for the wool trade and brewing. Horticulture remains popular, and the Shrewsbury Flower Show is one of the largest horticultural events in England.

9 miles (14 km) east of the Welsh border, Shrewsbury serves as the commercial centre for Shropshire and mid-Wales, with a retail output of over £299 million per year and light industry and distribution centres, such as Battlefield Enterprise Park, on the outskirts. The A5 and A49 trunk roads cross near to the town, and five railway lines meet at Shrewsbury railway station.

Shrewsbury (UK Parliament constituency)

Shrewsbury was a parliamentary constituency in England, centred on the town of Shrewsbury in Shropshire.

It was founded in 1290 as parliamentary borough, returning two members to the House of Commons of England until 1707, then of the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800, and of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1885. Under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, its representation was reduced to one Member of Parliament (MP).

The parliamentary borough was abolished at with effect from the 1918 general election, and the name transferred to a new county constituency. It was abolished in 1983 and renamed Shrewsbury and Atcham.

Famous MPs have included Sir Philip Sidney in 1581, Robert Clive (known as 'Clive of India') from 1761 to his death in 1774, and Benjamin Disraeli (later Prime Minister) in 1841-47.

HM Prison Shrewsbury

HM Prison Shrewsbury was a Category B/C men's prison in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. It closed in March 2013.

The former prison site, on Howard Street, adjacent to Shrewsbury railway station, is near the site of the Dana Gaol, a medieval prison. The name The Dana is still often used for the prison, as well as being the name of the road to one side of the prison and the pedestrian route that runs from near the front of the prison into the town centre via a footbridge over the station. The now disused platform 8 at the station, masked from the opposite platform by a high wall, was used for transporting prisoners between 1868 and the First World War.

A bust of prison reformer John Howard is above the main entrance to the prison. The street leading up to the prison from the main road is also named after him.

History

There has been a prison on the site since 1793, the original building being constructed by Thomas Telford to plans by Shrewsbury architect John Hiram Haycock; the present prison building was constructed in 1877. The prison took female convicts until 1922.

Shrewsbury Tourist Attractions The town has over 600 listed buildings including the Castle and the Abbey (home of the fictional Brother Cadfael). Relax in beautiful Quarry Park or take a boat trip on the River Severn. You will also find a huge variety of things to see and do in the surrounding countryside. Shrewsbury Events Each year a number of major festivals and special events are held, including the world famous Shrewsbury Flower Show. Spring sees one of the country’s top agricultural shows – the Shropshire County Show. August bank holiday sees the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, one of the Uk’s top folk events. Shrewsbury Shopping The historic centre is a shopper’s heaven packed with designer shops, smart new malls and an amazing range of independent retailers. Shopaholics will love Shrewsbury as there are lots of stores to choose from. And you’ll find many of the traditional high street favourites on offer in indoor shopping malls too. But the town’s retail strength also lies in a wealth of independent shops. For example, Wyle Cop is thought to have the longest uninterrupted row of independent shops in the country. And there are many. Shrewsbury Prison, for example, is one of the country’s oldest jails. You can take a tour walking in the footsteps of prisoners and viewing one of the last working execution rooms in the country. The Wroxeter Roman ruins are a major draw for visitors, especially since featuring on Channel 4’s Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day. The site was once the fourth largest city in Roman Britain and visitors can take a tour around the ruins and explore the new Roman Town House. There are plenty of eateries to choose from including traditional English pubs to Italian, Asian, French and Mexican. From Carluccio’s in the Square to the Armoury, which overlooks the river, there really is something for all tastes. Shrewsbury Food Festival is held at the Quarry Park and around the town and features plenty of tasty treats The town’s four-star Prince Rupert Hotel is the former home of King James I’s grandson Prince Rupert and is said to be one of the town’s finest hotels. If you love soaking up the history of a medieval castle then the town is the perfect place to visit. Shrewsbury Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1067 and since then has under gone several restorations. Shrewsbury’s national award-winning indoor market offers eclectic shopping and has even been compared to some of the coolest markets in London. Shrewsbury Farmers’ Market is also held in the town square once a month, usually on the first Friday of the month. The town centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. Shrewsbury Tourist Attractions The town has over 600 listed buildings including the Castle and the Abbey (home of the fictional Brother Cadfael). Relax in beautiful Quarry Park or take a boat trip on the River Severn. You will also find a huge variety of things to see and do in the surrounding countryside. Shrewsbury Events Each year a number of major festivals and special events are held, including the world famous Shrewsbury Flower Show. Spring sees one of the country’s top agricultural shows – the Shropshire County Show. August bank holiday sees the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, one of the Uk’s top folk events. Shrewsbury Shopping The historic centre is a shopper’s heaven packed with designer shops, smart new malls and an amazing range of independent retailers. And of course all the bars, cafes, restaurants and you could ever wish for. Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, in western England. It sits inside a loop of the River Severn, and its Tudor centre is lined with half-timbered houses. The medieval, red-brick Shrewsbury Castle houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum, where military artefacts include uniforms and weaponry. St Chad's Church is defined by its unique circular nave, and St Mary’s Church has elaborate stained-glass windows. Shrewsbury was founded by the Saxons and developed by the Tudors, which probably explains why it is famed for its castle, spires, abbey and medieval buildings. Walking around the town, it’s hard not to take in the wealth of history in front of your eyes, all set around the River Severn. So, it’s no surprise that in 1984 the cast and crew of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol transformed Shrewsbury into a snowy Victorian England for the film version of his book. Shopaholics will love Shrewsbury as there are lots of stores to choose from. And you’ll find many of the traditional high street favourites on offer in indoor shopping malls too. But the town’s retail strength also lies in a wealth of independent shops. For example, Wyle Cop is thought to have the longest uninterrupted row of independent shops in the country. And there are many. Shrewsbury Prison, for example, is one of the country’s oldest jails. You can take a tour walking in the footsteps of prisoners and viewing one of the last working execution rooms in the country. The Wroxeter Roman ruins are a major draw for visitors, especially since featuring on Channel 4’s Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day. The site was once the fourth largest city in Roman Britain and visitors can take a tour around the ruins and explore the new Roman Town House. There are plenty of eateries to choose from including traditional English pubs to Italian, Asian, French and Mexican. From Carluccio’s in the Square to the Armoury, which overlooks the river, there really is something for all tastes. Shrewsbury Food Festival is held at the Quarry Park and around the town and features plenty of tasty treats The town’s four-star Prince Rupert Hotel is the former home of King James I’s grandson Prince Rupert and is said to be one of the town’s finest hotels. If you love soaking up the history of a medieval castle then the town is the perfect place to visit. Shrewsbury Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1067 and since then has under gone several restorations. Shrewsbury’s national award-winning indoor market offers eclectic shopping and has even been compared to some of the coolest markets in London. Shrewsbury Farmers’ Market is also held in the town square once a month, usually on the first Friday of the month. The town centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Town walls, of which little now remains, then radiated out from the castle and surrounded the town (although the area known now as Town Walls still has a small section of it and a tower known as Town Walls Tower and in the care of the National Trust).

In 1138, King Stephen successfully besieged the castle held by William FitzAlan for the Empress Maud during the period known as The Anarchy. The castle was also briefly held by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, prince of Wales, in 1215. Little of this original physical structure remains.

Twentieth Century

The Shropshire Horticultural Society purchased the castle from a private owner and gave it to the town in 1924. Until 1981, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council meetings, where the full council would be present, used the castle's hall. Meetings later moved to Oakley Manor in Belle Vue, and then to the Guildhall in Frankwell.
