For the early part of the journey, the A49 has been largely superceded by larger roads and the M6 motorway, before being elevated to trunk road status from Warrington onwards.
The road closely follows the M6 for the first section to Standish and then drops down to form one of the main thoroughfares of Wigan, and continues southwards and crosses the M6 at Junction 23 at Haydock. Still single carriageway, the A49 continues southwards to Winwick and then duals up as it reaches the M62 and forms the major northerly route into Warrington, negotiating major junctions near the town center, and then narrowing down again as it continues southwards t...

Since September 2018, Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has been working on behalf of the council to deliver the new road, which will alleviate congestion on local roads and connect the town centre with the M6.
The impressive new piece of infrastructure includes a new highway and four bridges and is in line with the council’s commitment to providing better connectivity across the borough to generate economic growth.
Thank you for your patience throughout construction.

The road navigates around Leominster and everything comes to a crashing halt in Hereford, before continuing on towards Ross on Wye.
