The Kerch Strait (Russian:Керченский пролив, Ukrainian:Керченська протока, Crimean Tatar:Keriç boğazı) connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, separating the Kerch Peninsula of Crimea in the west from the Taman Peninsula of Russia's Krasnodar Krai in the east. The strait is 3.1 kilometres (1.9mi) to 15 kilometres (9.3mi) wide and up to 18 metres (59ft) deep.
The most important harbor, the Crimean city of Kerch, gives its name to the strait, formerly known as the CimmerianBosporus. The Krasnodar Krai side of the strait contains the Taman Bay encircled by Tuzla Island and the 2003 Russian-built 3.8 kilometres (2.4mi)-long dam to the south and Chushka Spit to the north. Russia had started the construction of a major cargo port near Taman, the most important Russian settlement on the strait, but its building has been suspended.
History
The straits are about 35 kilometers (22mi) long and are 3.1 kilometers (1.9mi) wide at the narrowest and separate an eastern extension of Crimea from Taman, the western extension of the Caucasus Mountains. In antiquity, there seem to have been a group of islands intersected by arms of the Kuban River (Hypanis) and various sounds which have since silted up. The Romans knew the strait as the Cimmerian Bosporus (Cimmerianus Bosporus) from its Greek name, the Cimmerian Strait (Κιμμέριος Βόσπορος, Kimmérios Bosporos), which honored the Cimmerians, nearby steppenomads.
The Arktika class is a Russian (former Soviet) class of nuclear-powered icebreakers; they are the largest and most powerful icebreakers ever constructed. Ships of the Arktika class are owned by the federal government, but were operated by the Murmansk Shipping Company (MSCO) until 2008, when they were transferred to the fully government-owned operator Atomflot. Of the ten civilian nuclear-powered vessels built by Russia (and the Soviet Union), six have been of this type. They are used for escorting merchant ships in the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia as well as for scientific and recreational expeditions to the Arctic.
History
On July 3, 1971, construction began on a conceptual design of a larger nuclear icebreaker, dubbed Arktika, in the Baltic Shipyard in then Leningrad. Four years later, on December 17, 1975, Moscow and Leningrad received radio messages informing them that sea trials had been completed successfully. The newest and largest nuclear icebreaker at the time was ready for the Arctic.
Ukraine (i/juːˈkreɪn/; Ukrainian:Україна, tr.Ukraina[ukrɑˈjinɑ]) is a country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland and Slovakia to the west, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively. It is currently in dispute with Russia over the Crimean peninsula which Russia annexed in 2014 but Ukraine and most of the international community still recognise as Ukrainian. Including Crimea, Ukraine has an area of 603,628km2 (233,062sqmi), making it the largest country entirely within Europe and the 46th largest country in the world, and a population of about 44.5 million, making it the 32nd most populous country in the world.
The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including Lithuania, Poland, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and the Russian Empire, and later submerged fully into Russia. Two brief periods of independence occurred during the 20th century, once near the end of World War I and another during World War II, but both occasions would ultimately see Ukraine's territories conquered and consolidated into a Soviet republic, a situation that persisted until 1991, when Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in the aftermath of its dissolution at the end of the Cold War.
The wine industry of Ukraine is well-established with long traditions. Several brands of wine from Ukraine are exported to bordering countries, the European Union, and North America.
History
A wine culture existed in today's Ukraine. Wine cultivation is in the northern part of the country (around Kiev and Chernihiv), dating back to the 11th century. Since 2000 the production as well as the export of the wines increased rapidly.

The Kerch Strait lies between the Russian mainland and the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. It joins the Black Sea to the Azov Sea. A 2003 treaty between Ukraine and Russia declared both the Strait and the Azov Sea as internal waters to both countries, allowing for equal access.

Russia closes access through Kerch Strait for six months
There is more tension between Russia and Ukraine, this time at sea.
Russia has closed all naval access to the Kerch Strait. Ukraine said the closure is illegal and violates a treaty.
Moscow has said its forces are conducting military drills in the Strait, following the mobilisation of tens of thousands of Russian troops on the Ukraine border in recent weeks.
There is a treaty between Russia and Ukraine agreeing to equal access to the Azov Sea, but Russia said it has the right to close the strait for military exercises, exercises that will go on until the end of October.

BAKU - Last weekend, paramilitary forces of the Russian FSB intercepted two small Ukrainian naval vessels and a tugboat attempting to pass through the Strait of Kerch. The Ukrainian vessels were navigating from the Black Sea port city of Odessa to Mariupol, on the coast of the Sea of Azov when the incident occurred. Now, with at least three injured Ukrainian sailors, both parties are pointing the finger at each other. Yet, whoever is right, the naval standoff illustrates the importance of the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov.

Readers looking for an incredibly charming, delicious Pinot Noir that’s going to deliver the goods should check out the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley from Hartford Court. Revealing a translucent ruby/plum color, it has a wonderful nose of spiced red and black fruits, candied violets, orange blossom, and incense. Medium-bodied on the palate, it’s wonderfully balanced, with soft, supple tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. Drink this beauty any time over the coming 5-6 years.

How Will The World's NEWEST Nuclear Icebreaker Work?
Icebreakers are a special class of ships that are designed to break even the thickest ice. They allow you to explore the most inhospitable regions of the world - the ice-covered waters of the Arctic. For a ship to be considered an icebreaker, it must have three features that most conventional ships lack: power, a reinforced hull, and a special shape for breaking the ice. This allows such vessels to move through pack ice or frozen waterways.

They are used to provide wiring ships in the ices of the Northern Sea Route in the freezing ports of the Russian Federation, research expeditions, rescue operations and tourist cruises.
In addition to the extreme weather conditions, the shooting was complicated by the fact that the icebreaker was always in motion. And if the drone was flying over the radar tower, the recording file was damaged.

This week on Perspective with Alison Smith: The War in Europe — The escalating, deadly conflict between Russia and Ukraine

VTB Bank Chairman and President Andrey Kostin discusses how Ukrainian lawmakers voted to declare martial law in areas bordering Russia, after Russia seized three Ukrainian navy ships.
The narrow stretch of water between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov is at the heart of a standoff between Russia and Ukraine. And as Mobin Nasir reports, that could threaten the region's trade and stability.
#KerchStrait #Ukraine #Russia

Rated 92 by Wine Enthusiast
Rounded, with substantial, elongated tannin, this is a richly layered, concentrated wine that expertly showcases the appellation in its embrace of dark blue and black fruit, cola, tea and baking spice. (Editors' Choice)
Rated 91 by Vinous Media
The 2019 Pinot Noir (Russian River) is a terrific appellation-level offering in this range from Hartford Court. Blue/purplish fruit, cinnamon, licorice and spice all grace this expressive, mid-weight Pinot. Enjoy it over the next decade.
Rated 90 by Wine Advocate
The 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, 27% new. It delivers vibrant notes of black cherries, kirsch and mulberries with suggestions of garrigue and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of ripe, juicy black and red berry flavors, supported by soft tannins, finishing with a lively red berry kick. 8,000 cases were made.

This video was shot in the Arctic Ocean in March 2018. For 7 days our crew passed through the Barents Sea to Karsky around the Novaya Zemlya archipelago on the nuclear icebreaker Yamal - we saw the northern lights and polar bears, watched the ships stuck in the ice being towed, and were very cold.
In the video you can see two Russian icebreakers - “50 Years of Victory” and “Yamal” with a capacity of 75,000 horsepower and a distinctive shark mouth, which appeared on it in 1994 during one of the children's humanitarian programs. According to legend, someone suggested drawing a smiling shark mouth on the nose to make it more fun for children. At present, Russia has the only nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet in the world.

The Arktika-class icebreaker is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems, which allow it to operate safely and effectively in remote and challenging environments. It also has facilities for scientific research and exploration, making it a valuable asset for studying the Arctic region and its ecosystem.
