The Department for Communities and Local Government considered reorganising North Yorkshire County Council's administrative structure by abolishing the seven district councils and the county council to create a North Yorkshire unitary authority. The changes were planned to be implemented no later than 1 April 2009. This was rejected on 25 July 2007 so the County Council and District Council structure will remain.
The River Esk is a river in North Yorkshire, England that empties into the North Sea at Whitby after a course of around 28 miles (45km) through the valley of Eskdale, named after the river itself.
Overview
Due to its rural nature, the river is clean and healthy, supporting a wealth of wildlife. Salmon spawn right up through Eskdale, and a number of "leaps" are provided to enable them to travel through weirs on the course. There are clearly visible examples at Ruswarp, where the tidal stretch through to Whitby begins and at Sleights. Around Whitby the Esk has a large population of sea trout, and the river is noted for freshwater pearl mussels, although these are threatened with extinction due to buildups of silt in the river. The Esk is also the only major river in Yorkshire to drain directly into the North Sea.
The river rises at the Esklets on Westerdale Moor in the North York Moors, flowing through Westerdale before merging with a large number of becks from the surrounding hills, including Tower, Baysdale, Sleddale, Danby, Great Fryup, Stonegate, Glaisdale and Murk becks. Running east through the valley known as Eskdale it leaves the moors via the villages of Sleights and Ruswarp, between which it forms the boundary of the North York Moors, and reaches the North Sea three miles later by bisecting the resort of Whitby.
River Esk, Lothian, rising in Midlothian, entering the Firth of Forth at Musselburgh, East Lothian
The Lothian Esk rises as two separate rivers, the North Esk and the South Esk. A reference to either term may refer to a tributary or one of the Angus rivers.
The South Esk rises at the southernmost extremity of Midlothian, on the western slopes of Blackhope Scar (the highest of the Moorfoot Hills). It flows north through Gladhouse Reservoir and Rosebery Reservoir, and through the village of Temple, Midlothian, before receiving the Redside Burn close to Arniston House. It is joined by the Gore Water and then the Dalhousie Burn, just to the west of Newtongrange, before passing Newbattle Abbey and proceeding through Dalkeith.
The River Esk is a river in Cumbria, England. It flows for approximately 25km (15.5 miles) from its source in the Scafells range of mountains to its estuary at Ravenglass. It is one of two Rivers Esk in Cumbria, and not to be confused with the Border Esk which flows on the Scottish side of the border.
It rises in the Sca Fell range of mountains at a height of 800 metres, just below Esk Hause, the mountain pass between the fells of Great End and Esk Pike. The infant river then flows southerly through wild and picturesque countryside receiving many streams flowing off the Scafell range, the most significant of which are Calfcove Gill and Little Narrowcove Beck. The river makes several leaps over waterfalls including the Esk Falls before being joined by its first major tributary Lingcove Beck at Lingcove Bridge. Within a few miles the Esk passes Brotherilkeld Farm, which formerly belonged to the monks of Furness Abbey, at this point it is joined by Hardknott Beck and the river now flows westerly through the farmland of Eskdale and is accompanied by the motor road which goes down the valley.
Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər/ or /ˈjɔːrkʃɪər/) is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.
Within the borders of the historic county of Yorkshire are areas which are widely considered to be among the greenest in England, due to the vast stretches of unspoiled countryside in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors and to the open aspect of some of the major cities. Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed "God's Own County" or "God's Own Country".

River Esk Kingfisher, Sleights Near Whitby North Yorkshire
Ive been trying to compile a lot of short clips of the Autumn Months around Whitby, The North York Moors And The Esk Valley.
Today I was at Sleights watching the fish jumping at Sleights Dam Salmon Leap. Whilst there this Kingfisher turned up and sat right next to me. Sadly I only have my 200mm lens at the moment as my longer lens is currently with Fuji for repair.
As always when things turn up unexpected I wasn't quite ready for his arrival, but I grabbed what footage I could and I hope to add these shots of the Kingfisher to my Autumn video which I hope to compile in November and December so please keep an eye out for that one when I release it.
Once again thanks for looking. Please give the video a thumbs up and subscribe to this channel for future updates from the area.

Salmon And Sea Trout - River Esk - A Yorkshire Migration
The annual return of Salmon and Sea Trout to The Yorkshire Esk. Every year fish return to the river in which they were born. After several years at sea the fish return to spawn and produce the next generation of migratory fish.
Entering The Esk at Whitby the fish swim as far inland as Kildale which is some 20 miles from the sea.
Many of these fish have been as far as Greenland and Iceland and are thought to return to the exact gravel bed on which they were born many years earlier
Fish tagged at Ruswarp have been caught in Iceland in passed years. The river Esk is one of England's top sea trout rivers, and at one time (due to pollution) was Yorkshires only Salmon river.
Scientists believe that once in the general area of the north sea, these fish can smell the correct river to return to...
