The South Esk River is the longest river in Tasmania. It starts in the eastern foothills of the Ben Lomond plateau near Mathinna and arcs around the entire southern promontory of the mountain - passing through Fingal, flowing through Avoca and Evandale before wending its way northwest through Longford and Hadspen. The river finally meets the Meander River and flows through the Cataract Gorge to meet the North Esk River at Launceston.
Aboriginal History of the South Esk River
The usually quoted Palawa name for the river is mangana lienta, from the word menanyer - 'large stream' and liena - 'fresh water'.
The river's northern reaches were known as mooronnoe (moor.ron.noe - which translates as 'river on the plain') and the river west of the Ben Lomond massif was known as pleepertoommelar.
The South Esk River passed through, and formed the borders of, the traditional lands of two nations of the Palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal). The Ben Lomond Nation occupied territory enclosed by the river's western and southern stretches and occupied the entire upper reaches as far as its northern watershed. The Panninher, Tyrernotepanner and Leterremairrener clans of the North Midlands Nation occupied the territories to the west of the river. The aboriginal clans exploited the hunting grounds alongside the river and took the native freshwater mussel for food.
The more northerly of the two rivers called Esk River in New Zealand lies in Hawke's Bay, in the eastern North Island. One of the region's major rivers, it flows south from the slopes of Mount Taraponui in the Maungaharuru Range before turning east to reach Hawke Bay10 kilometres (6mi) north of Napier. State Highway 5 follows the lower course of the river for several kilometres close to the settlement of Eskdale. The river is probably named after the Esk River in southern Scotland and north-west England.
The lower 19 kilometres (12mi) of the Esk can be suitable for whitewater canoeing, but the flow needs to be above normal.Brown and rainbow trout are available in the river, but fishing is restricted.
The southern stretch of the river forms the northern boundary for urban development in Napier.Hukarere Girls' College is located near the Esk River.
Chardonnay and red wine grapes are grown in the Esk River valley.
River Esk, Lothian, rising in Midlothian, entering the Firth of Forth at Musselburgh, East Lothian
The Lothian Esk rises as two separate rivers, the North Esk and the South Esk. A reference to either term may refer to a tributary or one of the Angus rivers.
Esk River rises below Richmond Range, southeast of Tabbimoble, and flows generally to south through Bundjalung National Park towards its confluence with the northern arm of the Clarence River, northwest of the coastal fishing village of Iluka. The river descends 28 metres (92ft) over its 25 kilometres (16mi)course.
The river is an increasingly popular kayak fishing location that is home to a variety of fish species such as yellowfin bream, dusky flathead and sand whiting in its lower brackish areas and has a good population of Australian bass in its freshwater reaches. The Esk River is considered the largest untouched coastal river system on the New South Wales North Coast.

The South Esk River
The South Esk is the longest river in Tasmania. At over 250km, it’s about the same distance as driving from George Town to Hobart. Beginning on the eastern slopes of Ben Lomond, the South Esk winds through towns and rich farmland, and flows into Lake Trevallyn before entering the kanamaluka / Tamar estuary near Launceston.
Providing a vital supply of water and electricity, as well as a pathway to the sea for migratory species – the South Esk river is a precious resource for northern Tasmania. In this video we take a closer look at just a few of the natural and social values of this waterway.

Introducing The Aldbar Fishings | River South Esk
In this footage we recently filmed takes a look at the pools and a fly-through of the Aldbar beat on the River South Esk below Finavon. The beat is owned and managed by The Derbyshire County Angling Club who are now letting the fishing on the beat.
Aldbar is a lovely lower mid-river beat and consistently catches fish throughout the season, particularly from April onwards where large spring salmon and sea trout get caught.
The beat is easily accessible on foot and the pools are easily waded when required.
Located between Dundee & Aberdeen just outside Brechin, Aldbar offers the visiting angler easily accessible secluded & productive fishing where you just don't know what you will catch next.
Enjoy the video.
