It is one of the safest seats in England, formed on an area with a long history of Conservative representation and with a large plurality of its voting-age population having in the last election voted Conservative. It was also the constituency in 1992 that when declared, saw the Conservatives gain the 4th straight majority since 1979 and John Major re-elected as Prime Minister.
At 1.6% only of its area as unemployment claimants, Skipton and Ripon had significantly lower than national average unemployment (c.f. 3.8%) in November 2012.
Boundaries
1983-1997: The District of Craven, and the Borough of Harrogate wards of Almscliffe, Bishop Monkton, Boroughbridge, Fountains, Killinghall, Kirkby Malzeard, Lower Nidderdale, Mashamshire, Newby, Nidd Valley, Pateley Bridge, Ripon East, Ripon West, Wathvale, and Wharfedale Moors.
Skipton is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. It was important during the English Civil War and was the site of a prisoner of war camp during the First World War.
One of the oldest mills in North Yorkshire, High Corn Mill is powered by the waters of Eller Beck, and dates to 1310 when it was owned by Robert de Clifford, 1st Baron de Clifford; at that point it was transferred to the powerful Clifford family by the then King Edward II. The mill as it appears today is only half of what used to exist when two mills were in operation to produce corn for the whole of Skipton. The mill has been completely redesigned, from the mill grounds to the buildings themselves. The outside walls of the mill have been sandblasted and the two main buildings of the old mill have been turned into flats from 2007 onwards, with one stand-alone building yet to be redesigned, touched or Sandblasted.
1885-1918: Part of the Wapentake of Skipton and Ewecross.
1918-1950: The Urban Districts of Barnoldswick, Earby, and Skipton, and the Rural Districts of Bowland, Sedbergh (the civil parishes of Dent, Garsdale, and Sedbergh), Settle (the civil parishes of Austwick, Bentham, Clapham-cum-Newby, Giggleswick, Horton, Ingleton, Malham, Settle, and Stainforth), and Skipton.
1950-1983: The Urban Districts of Barnoldswick, Earby, and Skipton, the Rural Districts of Bowland, Sedbergh, and Settle, and part of the Rural District of Skipton.
The city was originally known as Inhrypum and was founded by Saint Wilfrid during the time of the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria, a period during which it enjoyed prominence in terms of religious importance in Great Britain. It was for a period under Viking control, and later suffered under the Normans. After a brief period of building projects under the Plantagenets, the city emerged with a prominent wool and cloth industry. Ripon became well known for its production of spurs during the 16th and 17th century, but would later remain largely unaffected by the Industrial Revolution.
Ripon was first represented in the Model Parliament of 1295, and also returned members in 1307 and 1337, but it was not permanently represented until 1553, after which it returned two Members of Parliament. It was a parliamentary borough consisting only of the town of Ripon itself until the Great Reform Act of 1832; the right to vote was vested in the holders of the burgage tenements, but voting was rare for the last contested election in Ripon before the Reform Act had been in 1715! By 1832 it was estimated that there were 43 men qualified to vote, though the population of the borough was over 5,000.
A population of this size made Ripon one of the more substantial boroughs, and after the Reform Act it kept its right to return two members, though the boundaries of the borough were slightly extended to bring in another 600 people living in the neighbouring parish of Aismunderby-cum-Bondgate. However, the next Reform Act, which came into force at the 1868 election, reduced Ripon's representation from two MPs to one.

Skipton in the Yorkshire Sunshine
We spent the day in the beautiful town of Skipton in Yorkshire and then we met @CharlesVeitch 🙌🏼 it was so surreal. We have only been watching his videos for just over a month and there he was stood at the side of us doing his latest Vlog in the exact same place we was doing ours. Such a nice honest man.
So we decided to spend the day in Skipton, Yorkshire.
What's not to love about Skipton? Immense history, a rich culture, independent shops, food & drink places galore, a famous market and an iconic castle.

Skipton Step Into Action
We're co-ordinating new scheme to ensure that residents experiencing the effects of loneliness are given advice and help to prevent the profound impact that the isolation can have on their health.
Research has shown that loneliness can prove to be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes per day, and people enduring isolation are 50% more likely to die prematurely than those with healthy social relationships.
The project is providing funding to charities and community groups to target those most in need, especially across the vast rural areas of England’s largest county. Grants have been awarded to 25 organisations to help to point residents experiencing loneliness to specialist support and engage more in their communities.
Among the organisations which will benefit from funding is Skipton S...

Among the organisations which will benefit from funding is Skipton Step Into Action.
Work is also under way to support community transport schemes to ensure that those experiencing loneliness are given the ability to travel to events.

A walk around Skipton in North Yorkshire, England.
We take a look at the market town of Skipton Yorkshire to see the Castle, High Street, The Canal and the great shops there!
Skipton is a market town in North Yorkshire just outside of the Yorkshire Dales, and situated on the Leeds to Liverpool canal.
The historic Skipton High Street is a cracking place to have a mooch around the shops and bars and restaurants so we take the cameras and enjoy a walk around a lovely sunny (but cold!) Skipton Town Centre
If you've been to Skipton you will already know how great it is to walk along the canal, and then up Skipton High Street to Skipton Castle so we'll try and recreate the experience for you here!
Have a watch as we wander round Skipton and then at the end leave me a comment down below and tell me where you'd like me to film next!
