Ireland (i/ˈaɪərlənd/; Irish:Éire[ˈeːɾʲə]), also known as the Republic of Ireland (Poblacht na hÉireann), is a sovereign state in north-western Europe occupying about five-sixths of the island of Ireland. The capital and largest city is Dublin, which is located on the eastern part of the island, and whose metropolitan area is home to around a third of the country's 4.6 million inhabitants. The state shares its only land border with Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom. It is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the Celtic Sea to the south, Saint George's Channel to the south-east and the Irish Sea to the east. It is a unitary, parliamentary republic. The Oireachtas (legislature) consists of a lower house, Dáil Éireann (House of Representatives, lit. 'Assembly of Ireland'), an upper house, Seanad Éireann (Senate of Ireland), and an elected President (Uachtarán) who serves as the largely ceremonial head of state, but with some important powers and duties. The head of government is the Taoiseach (Prime Minister, literally 'Chief', a title not used in English), who is elected by the Dáil and appointed by the President, and appoints other government ministers.
Following the Irish War of Independence from the United Kingdom, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) was founded in September 1921. Ireland joined world football governing body FIFA in August 1923 as the Football Association of the Irish Free State (FAIFS). Ireland's first post-Independence internationals were played at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. The team played as Irish Free State between 1924 and 1935. The name Football Association of Ireland was re-adopted in 1936, and from then until 1954, they played as Ireland; since 1954 they have been Republic of Ireland following the renaming of the team by FIFA, to distinguish them from Northern Ireland.
There have been various names for the state that is today officially known as Ireland. The state makes up almost five-sixths of the island of Ireland. Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, covers the rest of the island. When the state was created in 1922 it was named the Irish Free State. In 1937 it adopted a new constitution which claimed all of Ireland as its territory, becoming Ireland in English and Éire in Irish, although the latter was often used in English too. In 1949 it declared itself a republic and adopted the term Republic of Ireland as its official description while keeping the name Ireland.
The terms Republic of Ireland (ROI), the Republic or the South are often used when there is a need to distinguish the state from the island or when Northern Ireland (NI or the North) is being discussed. Some Irish republicans avoid calling the state Ireland because they view it as partitionist.
Constitutional name
Article 4 of the Constitution of Ireland, adopted in 1937, provides that "[t]he name of the State is Éire, or, in the English language, Ireland". Hence, the Irish state has two official names, Éire (in Irish) and Ireland (in English). For official purposes, including in international treaties and other legal documents, and where the language of the documents is English, the Irish government uses the name Ireland. The same is true in respect of the name Éire for documents written in Irish. Similarly, the name of the state is reflected in its institutions and public offices. For example, there is a President of Ireland and a Constitution of Ireland. The name Ireland is also used in the state's diplomatic relations with foreign nations and at meetings of the United Nations,European Union,Council of Europe,International Monetary Fund, and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
The Republic of Ireland Act 1948 (No. 22 of 1948) is an Act of the Oireachtas (parliament) which declared that Ireland may be officially described as the Republic of Ireland, and vested in the President of Ireland the power to exercise the executive authority of the state in its external relations, on the advice of the Government of Ireland. The Act was signed into law on 21 December 1948 and came into force on 18 April 1949, Easter Monday, the 33rd anniversary of the beginning of the Easter Rising.
The Act ended the remaining statutory role of the British monarchy in relation to the state, by repealing the 1936 External Relations Act, which had vested in George VI and his successors those functions which the Act now transferred to the President.
Text of Act
The Republic of Ireland Act is itself quite short, running to just 5 brief sections, and is therefore set out in full as follows:
The Republic of Ireland Act, 1948 An Act to repeal the Executive Authority (External Relations) Act, 1936, to declare that the description of the State shall be the Republic of Ireland, and to enable the President to exercise the executive power or any executive function of the state in or in connection with its external relations. (21 December 1948)
Be it enacted by the Oireachtas as follows:—
1.—The Executive Authority (External Relations) Act, 1936 (No. 58 of 1936), is hereby repealed.
2.—It is hereby declared that the description of the State shall be the Republic of Ireland.
3.—The President, on the authority and on the advice of the Government, may exercise the executive power or any executive function of the State in or in connection with its external relations.
4.—This Act shall come into operation on such day as the Government may by order appoint.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.
Why is Ireland Divided? (Short Animated Documentary)
The island of Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom which controls the north. But given that the Irish fought a short and brutal war for independence, why didn't the north leave the UK with the rest of Ireland? To find out why Ireland is still divided watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

Why the Troubles started in Northern Ireland
The complicated history of Northern Ireland is hotly contested. The bloody 30-year conflict known as the Troubles caused thousands of deaths, with deep divisions across Northern Ireland, and the situation remains highly divisive to this day. This four-part series will examine the entire history of the Troubles, from the causes of the conflict to the long and difficult peace negotiations. In this first episode, we take an in depth look at the origin of the Troubles. Though the conflict began in earnest in 1969, the divisions that caused it can be traced back centuries.

How Ireland Became the Richest Country that no one can live in
This is the Republic of Ireland, a country home to 5.1 million people that are all becoming the wealthiest citizens in the world.
As proof, Ireland’s GDP per capita is larger than traditionally rich nations like Switzerland and Norway, and this publication from the Central Bank of Ireland pointed out that one in eight households in Ireland are millionaires, at least on paper.
But ask any Irish people you knew and they will tell you that Ireland is not a good place to live in, to the point that 7 out of 10 young people in Ireland want to emigrate somewhere else. The cost of living is through the roof, housing is unaffordable that many people live with their parents, and it is hard to find a job. It’s as if they are the victim of their own success.
So what happened?
How is it that a co...

In 1968, conflict broke out in Northern Ireland; the Troubles" had begun. In this documentary, we explore the waves of political violence & sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland, and the roots of the divide between British Unionists & Irish Nationalists.
The Troubles | Northern Ireland Conflict | Irish Conflict | IRA | UVF | Belfast Conflict
This period saw rise of paramilitary groups like the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and Ulster Volunteer force (UVF), the deployment of the British Army in Northern Ireland under Operation Banner.
In this video, through interviews with former IRA & UVF prisoners, I’ll walk you through the conflicts roots during the “Plantation of Ulster”, it’s triggers, like "Bloody Sunday”, and where things stand now since the Good Friday Agreement saw the start of peace and reconciliation and a lasting peace process.
In Belfast, we spoke with ex-members of the paramilitaries in Northern Ireland - former IRA prisoner Michael Culbert, and former UVF prisoner Billy Hutchinson - to try and understand the violence that swept across Northern Ireland.
Sectarian Violence | Impact of The Troubles | Historical Unrest in Ireland.
"The Troubles”, a name that does not sit well with some of those who were involved in it, has left behind a collective trauma in Northern Ireland that will be felt for decades to come. The legacy of the Troubles shapes modern Northern Ireland’s communities today, with peace walls dividing catholic and protestant, unionist and republican neighbourhoods.
Troubles Documentary | Troubles History
What were the troubles? Who are the IRA? Why is Northern Ireland part of the UK? And how safe is Northern Ireland today? This is the story of Northern Ireland’s 30-year conflict, as told by former members of the IRA & UVF who fought in it.

How is it that a country so rich and advanced is at the same time, deemed almost unliveable by its own people? Well, today we're going to explore this paradox.

While the rest of Europe was flailing aimlessly through the Dark Ages, Ireland was both preserving the ancient world and setting the stage for the Medieval Period. Then England showed up.

In this video we are going to imagine potential Irish language names for 6 American States based on the History and Geography of the State. I will give a few options for possible names and then settle on one. This allows us to imagine what names the States of America could have if they were named in the same way as Counties and towns in Ireland. As always there will be slow and clear pronunciation along with subtitles to help.

Irish MEP Clare Daly Names & Shames EU & America Over State-Sponsored Terrorism In Viral Speech
Ireland News Today: An Irish Member of the European Parliament who previously condemned Israel as “genocidal” has said it is “laughable” that those calling for arms to Ukraine do not support arms being supplied to Palestine.

The motion followed a debate on “illegal and illegitimate” referendums used as a pretext by Russia to annex four eastern regions of Ukraine.

How is it that a country so rich and advanced is at the same time, deemed almost unliveable by its own people? Well, today we're going to explore this paradox.

While the rest of Europe was flailing aimlessly through the Dark Ages, Ireland was both preserving the ancient world and setting the stage for the Medieval Period. Then England showed up.

Ireland News Today: An Irish Member of the European Parliament who previously condemned Israel as “genocidal” has said it is “laughable” that those calling for arms to Ukraine do not support arms being supplied to Palestine.
Clare Daly MEP voted against an October 5 resolution condemning an escalation of Russia’s war effort.
The motion followed a debate on “illegal and illegitimate” referendums used as a pretext by Russia to annex four eastern regions of Ukraine.
