Southern Ireland (Irish:Deisceart Éireann) was the name given to the larger of the two parts of Ireland that were created when Ireland was partitioned under the Government of Ireland Act 1920. It comprised 26 of the 32 counties of Ireland or about five-sixths of the area of the island, whilst the remaining six counties in the northeast of the island formed Northern Ireland.
The Act of 1920, which came into force on 3 May 1921, was intended to create two self-governing territories within Ireland, each with their own parliament and governmental institutions and both remaining within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. It also contained provisions for co-operation between the two territories and for the eventual reunification of Ireland. However, in the 1921 elections for Southern Ireland's House of Commons, Sinn Féin candidates were returned unopposed in 124 of the 128 seats, and ignored the parliament, assembling instead as the Second Dáil. The "Parliament of Southern Ireland"—consisting of the four unionist members—met only once. Continuing unrest led to the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the Provisional Government which administered Southern Ireland from 16 January 1922 to 5 December 1922: effectively a transitional administration for the period between the ratifying of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the establishment of the Irish Free State. Its legitimacy was disputed by the Anti-Treaty delegates to Dáil Éireann.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.

Outbreak of the Irish War of Independence - Black and Tans vs. IRA Guerrillas (Documentary)
Watch The Great War on Nebula: https://go.nebula.tv/the-great-war
The movement for more Irish self determination had turned into a full out revolutionary movement by 1919. The British Empire was losing control over Ireland and by early 1920 was in a full out guerrilla war against the Irish Republican Army (IRA). To regain control more police forces were recruited with wide ranging authorities - and a lack of actual police training. With their mismatched equipment made from war supplies, they soon got the nickname "Black and Tans".

Bloody Sunday 1972: The day's events explained
Bloody Sunday has become synonymous with the darkest period of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. But how did a protest march on January 30th 1972 lead to a massacre?

1972 was the worst year of violence in Northern Ireland since the latest spate of trouble broke out in 1967. The inhabitants of Belfast and Londonderry have had to cope with the growing menace of bomb outrages, usually in crowded streets or shops and with little or no warning. We review the major developments of 1972 and assess the chances for peace.

Bloody Sunday has become synonymous with the darkest period of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. But how did a protest march on January 30th 1972 lead to a massacre?
Thirteen people were killed and a further 15 wounded after members of the Army's Parachute Regiment opened fire on civil rights demonstrators in the Bogside - a predominantly Catholic part of Londonderry (Derry).
The image of a Catholic priest waving a blood-stained handkerchief as he helped a victim to safety was broadcast around the world.
The Saville Inquiry, set up by Tony Blair in 1998, found that none of the casualties were posing a threat or doing anything that would justify their shooting.
Victims' families have waited 47 years to see if there would be prosecutions. One former British paratrooper is to be charged with the murder of James Wray and William McKinney, and for the attempted murders of Joseph Friel, Michael Quinn, Joe Mahon and Patrick O’Donnell.

In early 1921 the Anglo-Irish War/Irish War of Independence reached its bloody climax. Multiple IRA ambushes led to British soldiers being killed, at the same time the IRA walked on "very thin ice" and overstretched their resources.

(5 Jan 1973) STORY
