The Minister-President of Latvia (Latvian:Ministru prezidents) is the most powerful member of the Government of the Republic of Latvia, and presides over the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers. The Prime Minister is nominated by the President of Latvia, but must be able to obtain the support of a majority of Saeima (parliament).
The tables below display all Latvian Prime Ministers for both the first period when Latvia was independent (1918–1940) and since the country regained its independence (1990–present). From 1990 to 6 July 1993, the office was known as Chairman of the Council of Ministers, but is generally considered to have been the same role.
A direct translation of the official Latvian term is Minister-President. Although the equivalent is used in some European languages, it is not used conventionally in English.
1 During the 1918-1920 Independence War, Latvia was contested by two other governments: the government of Soviet Latvia, led by Pēteris Stučka, and the government of Andrievs Niedra, backed by Baltic Germans. Some sources may list Stučka and Niedra as prime ministers for periods when their governments controlled most of Latvia.
The President of the Government of Spain (Spanish:Presidente del Gobierno), formally known by English-speaking nations and formally translated by the European Commission Directorate-General in English as Prime Minister is the head of Government of Spain. The current office is established under the Constitution of 1978.
The King of Spain nominates a candidate for the presidency who stands before the Congress of Deputies of Spain, the lower house of the Cortes Generales (parliament), for a vote of confidence in a process known as a parliamentarian investiture, effectively an indirect election of the head of government by the elected Congress of Deputies. In practice, the Prime Minister is almost always the leader of the largest party in the Congress. Since current constitutional practice in Spain calls for the King to act on the advice of his ministers, the Prime Minister is effectively the country's chief executive.
The 2004 European election was the sixth election to the European Parliament. However, as Latvia had only joined the European Union earlier that month, it was the first election European election held in that state. The election took place on June 12.
There were lists of candidates from 16 political parties. with a total of 1019 candidates. The voter turnout was 41.20%, with 574,674 voters casting votes. It was significantly lower than the usual turnout for Latvian parliamentary elections (which has been between 71% and 73% for previous three elections) but higher than the turnout in the rest of the EU.
1284 Latvia, provisional designation 1933 OP, is a dark asteroid with a rare reddish spectral type from the middle region of the asteroid belt, about 37 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at Heidelberg Observatory in southern Germany on 27 July 1933.
The asteroid is classified as a rare T-type and L-type in the Tholen and SMASS taxonomy scheme, respectively, both indicating a featureless spectra of a dark and reddish body. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.2–3.1AU once every 4 years and 4 months (1,572 days). Its orbit shows an eccentricity of 0.17 and is tilted by 11 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic. It has a rotation period of 9.6 hours. According to the surveys carried out by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, IRAS, the Japanese Akari satellite, and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer with its subsequent NEOWISE mission, it has a geometric albedo that lies between 0.06 and 0.10.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Latvian counterpart, Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš, appeared to signal a shift on Thursday to NATO's own strategic vision ahead of its planned summit in Spain later this year.

Hundreds of Canadian troops are already in the region, leading a battle group of about 1,500, but Trudeau said this would be a "first of its kind" unit in the Baltic Sea.
The prime ministers are expected to speak about the two countries' partnership and security issues in the broader Baltic region. The foreign ministers of Canada and the three Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - will meet in June.
The Canadian prime minister also spoke about how his government would continue to work to ensure abortion access nationwide, so the progress made would "not be rolled back" by future governments. He said that could possibly be done through legislation or leaving it in the hands of the medical association that has governance over the procedure, but said there are discussions on potential solutions.
