Historically, the territory south of Boundary Street (known as Kowloon and Stonecutter's Island) was ceded by Qing dynastyChina to Great Britain in 1860 under the Convention of Peking. The territory north of Boundary Street (later known as New Kowloon) remained part of China until it was leased as part of the New Territories to Britain in 1898 for 99 years under the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory (also known as the Second Convention of Peking). The area of New Kowloon was defined by law in 1937 to increase land available for urban development. In practice, nevertheless, both the areas to the south and to the north of Boundary Street (i.e. both Kowloon and New Kowloon), from the Lei Yue Mun strait in the east to Mei Foo Sun Chuen and Lai Chi Kok Bay in the west, are collectively known as "Kowloon". For example, a postal address in Kwun Tong will identify "Kowloon" as its regional destination, even though it is technically in New Kowloon.
The systematic transcription Kau Lung or Kau-lung was often used in derived place names before World War II, for example Kau-lung Bay instead of Kowloon Bay. Other spellings include Kauloong and Kawloong.
Escalators link Elements directly with the station concourse.
History
The station was designed by TFP Farrells. During the planning stage, it was called West Kowloon Station (Chinese: 西九龍站).
On 16 September 2000, the new shopping mall "Dickson CyberExpress" (Chinese: 迪生數碼世界) was opened by Dickson Poon. The size was 70,000 square feet (6,500m2) spread over four levels of the station with six shopping areas. However, the mall did not have the expected volume of customers and business was weak. After half a year, the mall shrank its size. The mall management company planned to decrease the level of the mall from 4 levels to 3 levels and to combine some of the shopping areas. Business remained poor due to sparse population near the station and a recession at that time. The mall finally closed its operation in 2005.

Milas was one of the people that helped filmed this 1989 documentary about the city. I spoke with him recently and he said that he is interested in a follow up video of some sort so we may expect something new on the way.
He mentioned how it was an incredibly tough shoot. They were a five person crew; himself as cinematographer, a camera assistant, focus-puller, sound recordist, a researcher, production assistant and the director, and a very nice Austrian lady who was most willing to collaborate and listen to crew suggestions.
They shot for 6 days continuously, 10-12 hours a day, at the height of the summer of 1987. He mentioned how it smelled very bad inside from the open drainage, the heat was stifling at plus 32ºC with little to no air circulation, also not knowing whether it was sewage or clean water dripping on their heads occasionally, they regularly had to wipe the camera and lens dry.
The claustrophobia- you could hardly turn around in some places with a 7kg Betacam SP camcorder on your shoulder. They had a tripod with them but hardly used it inside because there was nowhere to position it without blocking the narrow passageways.
They also frequently got lost and had to ask the locals for directions. Lunch was much-anticipated each day when they could take a break outside in the fresh air. After a day’s shoot they were absolutely dripping with sweat and the first thing they’d do after getting home was to put all their clothes straight in the wash and have a long shower. Working in those conditions was an immense challenge technically and physically but, as is often the case, none of that shows in the resulting footage.
Here we have a very interesting first hand account of what Hamdani Milas experienced in the walled city itself when he was filming this video. So by what he’s told me we can understand just how much of an incredible risk it was to film inside this city, even though it was near to when the city was demolished and the place was seen as safer it was still a high risk no go area.
I took it upon myself to re-sub the video as best as possible, the 4 part version is hard-subbed on a version of this film with very poor quality, the subs are also worded incorrectly in some places. So all I've done is re-subbed the whole thing and put it onto a better quality video clip. Since the subtitles are not hard subbed you can now use auto translate as well should be fairly accurate.
Note: about the section of this video where Jackie Pullinger is speaking, I’m sure anyone can see the subtitles are a transcript of Jackie Pullingers actual words in English and not the narrators. I’ve noticed a comment mentioning how the subs are way off in that part. While subbing this video I realised the narrator wasn’t giving an exact translation so took it upon myself to decipher what she was actually saying over his voice. Sorry I just couldn’t help it but it was out of boredom 😉

Kowloon Walled City was the most densely populated place ever in all of world history. Unfortunately, the city was demolished in 1994 but what would your life have been like if you lived inside? This is my attempt to explain.
#1 in most densely populated cities ever category.

Videos explaining things. Mostly over topics like history, geography, economics and science.
We believe that the world is a wonderfully fascinating place, and you can find wonder anywhere you look. That is what our videos attempt to convey.
Currently, I try my best to release one video every week. Bear with me :)
Credits go to cameraman Hamdani Milas. Christina Wesemann for creation and direction of the film and also to Hugo Portisch for production.

Check out the complete gameplay for this new game Welcome to Kowloon made in Unity. We played the game with a RTX 4090 in a 4K monitor. This dark first person horror adventure is similar to games like Silent Hill and P.T.
This is an indie horror from the first person, in which you find yourself in an area called Kowloon in search of cheap housing. The inhabitants of this place only at first glance seem to be ordinary people, but if we dig deeper, we will see their real faces.

The door is closed on my dreams! And it wont open for me! I feel like I need to scream! I feel like no one cares about me! I feel like I need to run! I feel like I need to be alone! But no one is letting me out! No one is helping me out! Instead everyone is locking the door, so I cant get out anymore! No one understands how I feel! No one understands what Im going threw! No one understands anything about me! No one understands! No one, No one understands! No one knows! They may never know! Chorus: The closed door wont let me out, The closed door is staying shut, The closed door is not opening! The closed door is what helps me from making a mistake! Sha lala la la sha lala la la Finally I think the door is opening, I might be able to get out, This place is getting old, Im out it worked! I kind of liked this place, It was a way for me to get away! Chorus: But now I can see the world, Now I can meet new people, Now I can breathe fresh air!
